RPI – REMOTE PROCESS INTERFACE

INTRODUCING THE REMOTE I/O PRINCIPLE

FDT AND HART COMMUNICATION

The Remote I/O concept allows extensive HART communication via the service bus or a class 2 Profibus Master. It also supports device configuration based on standard FDT/DTM technologies.

These advantages turn Remote I/O into an enabling technology, which allows expanded diagnostics and supports preventive maintenance for increased system availability.

COMBINING ANALOG AND DIGITAL WORLD

The Remote Process Interface (RPI) is one solution on the basis of the Remote I/O concept. It is designed to unite conventional analog field communication and the fieldbus world into one flexible interface

The Remote I/O concept from Pepperl+Fuchs consists of signal conditioning systems designed to connect field

devices in both safe and hazardous areas to the process control system via a standard fieldbus infrastructure.

system. Hardware investments are protected since proven analog field instruments can remain in place. Built-in diagnostic features provide information on the status of field circuits, devices, gateways and bus systems.

COST EFFICIENT HAZARDOUS AREA CONNECTION

RPI modules with 1 – 4 channels ensure the required galvanic isolation for intrinsic safety. While conventional systems require isolator modules to connect measuring devices in safe areas, RPI modules can also be used in Zone 2 without any additional hardware efforts. This results in impressive savings for both hardware and wiring.

REMOTE PROCESS INTERFACE (RPI) DETAILS

The Remote Process Interface (RPI) is an economical Remote I/O system, designed to connect the measurement

signals of conventional field devices between hazardous and safe areas.

Depending on local requirements, the system can be installed in the safe area or inside Zone 2 hazardous areas. It only needs to be clipped onto a DIN rail with Power Rail – neither requires extensive wiring or its own separate power supply.

A variety of gateway options allows communication via different fieldbus systems with up to 500 I/O points per gateway.

The RPI allows comprehensive control over any field device, especially when used in combination with conventional K-System modules.

Configuring the device or reading device parameters is possible either directly at the control room, by means of a portable PC, or any other HMI based upon VDI/VDE 2187 standard software.

SYSTEMS AND SOLUTIONS

Pepperl+Fuchs products are used worldwide in

industrial, hazardous, and corrosive environments

Our project engineers offer complete solutions using a variety of panels and enclosures. Customized and standard solutions are competetively priced and ensure the fastest possible installation on site.

Pepperl+Fuchs‚VisuNet is the world‚s first Zone 1 HMI platform that enables the process industry to communicate via Ethernet TCP/IP network structures eliminating proprietary connection techniques completely. VisuNet is compatible with all established PC-based distributed control systems (DCS).

The distance between the monitor, mouse and keyboard located in the hazardous area and the Host-PC in the safe area can be up to 2 km and can be used to control plant operations via Remote I/O.

VisuNet meets the toughest requirements in strength, safety and functionality.

NETWORK BASED PROCESS VISUALIZATION

Pepperl+Fuchs RPI equipment is supplied with ATEX certificates for hazardous areas Zone 0, Zone 1, Zone 2 or dust hazards in Zone 21 and Zone 22. Mounted in suitable enclosures it can also be installed in Zone 2 or Zone 22.

In addition we offer FAT (factory acceptance tests) and GAMP procedures.

REMOTE I/O – CUSTOMIZED SOLUTIONS

Remote I/O is often installed in the safe area control room next to the DCS or PLC.

This leads to a very flexible, easily extendable interface solution.

CONTROL ROOM

INSTALLATION

In Zone 2, explosion hazards may seldom exist or only for a short period of time. Remote I/O is often installed in Zone 2 close to the plant level. The documentation supplied offers guidance regarding the permitted extensions. This is based on the required temperature class, the expected ambient, and normal operating conditions.

ZONE 2 INSTALLATION

Explosion hazards may exist occasionally in Zone 1.

Sensors and actuators to measure and control process values are often located in Zone 1 or sometimes in Zone 0.
