Welcome to the September edition of the
Australian Stamp Bulletin
, as we prepare for
a month dedicated to the hobby in Australia.
Each year Stamp Collecting Month brings a
special stamp release for children, and this
year’s subject will please many.
Dinosaurs remain a fascination for young (and not so young) collectors with an interest in animals and in pre-historic times. Illustrator James Gurney brings to life some of Australia’s earliest inhabitants, spanning a time frame of some 30 million years. Also in September we bring you a stamp issue featuring Australian poultry breeds, and the third instalment in the Centenary of the AAE series – Disaster and Isolation. This part of the story looks at the survival of the small group of men who remained behind to wait for Mawson after the SY Aurora departs from the region. In October we take a tour of some historic Australian railway stations in the next instalment of the Historical Architecture series. I anticipate fond recognition for many and an appreciation of the art of illustrator Peter Edgeley.
A joint issue with Germany focuses on renowned explorer Ludwig Leichhardt, who mysteriously disappeared after moving inland from the Darling Downs in 1848. His party was attempting to reach the Swan River in Western Australia when tragedy struck. We also feature a stamp issue celebrating the release 200 years ago of the holey dollar and dump. The coins were the
fi rst to be struck in Australia to meet the need for some form of local currency. This edition also presents two new postal and numismatic covers for collectors and the Royal Baby sheetlet pack. The product range for this special release can be found on page 27.

Australian
poultry breeds
Since European settlement of Australia, poultry has been part of the domestic landscape of country areas. Historically, hen-keeping was also common in many towns, and once again it is on the rise in urban environments. Many imported heritage and hybrid breeds can be found in backyards and on farms around the country, but there are four specifi cally Australian breeds of fowl that have been developed since settlement: Australian Game, Australian Pit Game, Australorp and Australian Langshan. This stamp issue celebrates these breeds, with the former three depicted on the stamps, and the Australia Langshan included on the miniature sheet. The Australian Game was developed by farmers and “fanciers” in the early 19th century. This large bird had great egg-laying qualities
and was appreciated on the dinner table.
The origins of Australian Pit Game also go back to the early 19th century, when British Army Off icers played a role in developing it as a fi ghting bird. After cockfi ghting was outlawed in the mid-19th century, the Pit Game was bred for exhibition. Proudly known as “Australia’s national breed of fowl”, the Australorp was developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The result was a heavy breed that is an outstanding egg-layer, a good table bird and reliable brooder. The forerunners of the Australian Langshan were imported from China in the early part of the 20th century for their egg-laying ability. Following selective crossing, the breed soon proved itself a better layer of good-sized brown eggs and an excellent table bird.

Centenary
of the AAE
This is the third in a four-year program celebrating the centenary of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (AAE). The stamps in this issue capture key moments in the year following the deaths of Ninnis and Mertz, and Mawson’s return to the base camp only to see the Aurora sailing away. Mawson joined the small party of men who had remained behind to assist in the search for him. Over the next year, the group undertook signifi cant scientifi c work in the harsh isolation of the region.
Stamps
Walter Hannam – original wireless operator on the expedition who returned to Australia on the Aurora before the return of Mawson; Frank Wild – leader of the Western Party and third-in-command of the expedition; Extreme weather – a long, bleak winter faced the group who remained at base camp; Scientifi c work – kept the men occupied during the long, bleak winter; Antarctic wildlife – Weddell Seal and Cape Petrel.
Release date 10 September 2013
The stamps are presented in similar se-tenant combinations as in previous issues of this series.

This stamp issue illustrates six prehistoric animals that lived in Australia during the Cretaceous period (around 145 million years ago to 65 million years ago) Five of these animals are dinosaurs. The fi fth, Koolasuchus, is an amphibian that persisted on this continent long after it had become extinct elsewhere, a living fossil of its time. From left to right, the minisheet covers a period of nearly 30 million years and extends from the older, polar Victoria to the younger, more temperate Queensland. During those 30 million years, the most profound change that ever occurred in the terrestrial
fl ora took place. This was the appearance of the fl owering plants.
The particular animals chosen were from Queensland and Victoria because it is in those two states that the vast majority of dinosaur material has been found on this continent. The amphibian and with one exception, all the dinosaurs depicted, have never previously been illustrated on stamps. The one exception is Timimus, a dinosaur that is now interpreted as a member of a quite diff erent group than when illustrated on an Australian stamp in 1993. This is a perfect example of how science works – a revision of a viewpoint in the light of new information. This issue has been developed with the assistance of
palaeontologists at the Museum of Victoria and expert dinosaur illustrator, James Gurney.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, railways played an important role in transforming Australia into a nation by establishing a network of communications and trade throughout the continent. When American writer Mark Twain visited Maryborough, Victoria, in 1895, he described it as a “railway station with a town attached”. Built in 1890 of red brick with stucco trimming, the station still hosts freight and passenger services. The station at Quorn, South Australia, was
constructed in 1916 of stone and brick and served as a junction for rail traff ic travelling north–south and east–west. The station at Hay, NSW, opened in 1882. It is an Italianate building constructed of bonded brick with a corrugated iron roof. Recently restored, it no longer functions as a railway station. The Normanton railway station in Queensland, built around 1889, is historically important as a unique building in an isolated inland railway system.

Leichhardt
Release date 15 October 2013
This year is the 200th anniversary of the birth of German naturalist and explorer Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig Leichhardt (1813–c. 1848) whose mysterious disappearance in the Australian outback has become part of the nation’s mythology.
Ludwig Leichhardt was born in Prussia, the sixth of eight children. Initially educated at the universities of Berlin and Göttingen, he also studied medical and natural sciences in London and Paris. He arrived in Sydney in February 1842 with the intention of exploring the inland of Australia.
Leichhardt subsequently undertook three major expeditions: an overland expedition from the Darling Downs to Port Essington (1844 to 1845); an unsuccessful attempt, in 1846, to cross
Australia east to west; and a fi nal east–west quest to cross the continent from the Condamine River to the Swan River. This last expedition, which set out in March 1848, resulted in the disappearance of Leichhardt and his entire party. No remains have ever been found.
Leichhardt was last seen on 3 April 1848 at McPherson’s Station, Coogoon, on the Darling Downs. It is assumed that he and his party died sometime after in the inhospitable Great Sandy Desert. Search expeditions failed to fi nd the explorers, although they did fi nd trees marked with an “L”.
Leichhardt’s legacy includes his contribution to the natural sciences in Australia, detailed in his notebooks and diaries.

In 1813 nearly 40,000 examples of the “holey dollar and dump” were minted in New South Wales to address a currency shortage in the new colony. The coins, derived from Spanish dollars, became the fi rst to be circulated specifi cally in Australia.
On 26 November 1812, a special shipment of Spanish reale coins known as “pieces of eight” arrived in the colony from Madras aboard the Samarang. Governor Macquarie ordered that the centres be stamped out of the coins and counter-stamped around the hole with a value of fi ve shillings on the reverse and the words ‘NEW SOUTH WALES 1813’ on the obverse. These were the “holey dollars”. The centres (“dumps”) of the coins were given a value of 15 pence, stamped on the reverse, and a crown and “NEW SOUTH WALES 1813” stamped on the obverse.
The coins could not be traded outside Australia.
The work was carried out by William Henshall, a pardoned convict originally transported for forgery. Henshall was chosen to cut and counter stamp the coins with the task taking over a year to complete. The fi rst batch of new coins was delivered to Deputy Commissioner-General David Allen on 25 February 1814 and the fi nal batch in August the same year.
The holey dollar and dump coins went into circulation in 1814, were replaced by sterling coinage from 1822 and ceased to be legal tender in 1829. Most holey dollars and dumps were melted down after they ceased to be legal tender in 1829. Today, around 300 holey dollars and 1,000 dumps remain in private and public collections.
