The Pyramid Approach

to Education emphasizes

how to teach, rather than

simply what to teach.

PECS is a language training package that is used to teach communication skills rapidly to those with limited functional speech. PECS promotes communication within a social context, without lengthy prerequisite training or expensive materials. Training in PECS begins by teaching spontaneous requesting, and goes on to teach additional communicative functions such as responding to questions and commenting. Based on a study conducted at the Delaware Autism Program, 76% of children using PECS acquired speech as either their primary means of communication or as augmented by a picture based system. PECS is also used successfully by many students who have developed speech, but who are not using it functionally.

According to new pediatric guidelines regarding autism interventions published in PEDIATRICS: The Official Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, individuals with autism “who have limited verbal language, or those who do not respond to multiple interventions aimed at improving communication, should be offered the opportunity to use PECS.” Further, a Technical Expert Panel consisting of practitioners, researchers and parents concluded that PECS is one of only a handful of interventions that have shown efficacy in the treatment of autism (Maglione, Gans, Das, Timbie, Kasari and HRSA Autism Intervention Research, 2012).

PECS

®

Level 1 Training: Basic

Your first step in learning to

implement PECS!

The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) is used to rapidly teach communication skills to those with limited functional speech. PECS promotes communication within a social context, without lengthy prerequisite training. Training in PECS begins by teaching a spontaneous request, and goes on to teach additional communicative functions such as responding to questions and commenting. An added benefit for preschool children with autism and related disabilities is the high proportion who acquire independent speech. Participants will learn how to implement the six phases of PECS, plus attributes, through presenter demonstrations, video examples and role-play opportunities. Participants will leave the workshop with an understanding of how to implement PECS with individuals with autism, related developmental disabilities, and/or limited communication skills.

Registration time: 7:30 AM - 8:00 AM

Professional $395 · Parent $295

Tuition includes a copy of the PECS Training Manual, 2nd Edition, detailed handouts, a Certificate of Attendance and continental breakfast both days.

Agenda: 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM

What You Will Learn:

• The key Pyramid components to designing effective educational environments • Strategies to create an abundance of opportunities for communication

• The relationship between PECS and traditional communication training approaches • How to implement all six phases of PECS with target individuals, using a behavior analytic

With the current influx of communication devices and apps to the market, how do we ensure that basic functional communication skills are maintained and taught right from the beginning? Speech Generating Devices (SGDs) were first introduced for people with motor difficulties. The use of these devices have now expanded and are being introduced to learners with autism and other related communication difficulties. For these populations, language and cognition are often compromised and basic social and communication skills have not always been mastered prior to the introduction of a device. Because of this, the way we teach the use of SGDs needs to be specifically tailored to fit the needs of each individual paying attention to devices capabilities vs. user capabilities. This full-day workshop will describe procedures for analyzing a learner’s current PECS skills to determine candidacy for transitioning to a Speech Generating Device (SGD), choosing a device, and teaching functional use of the device, and why we must teach the basic principles of communication to our learner first to ensure positive outcomes are achieved.

*Please bring a Speech Generating Device (SGD) to the training for use during a variety of activities to receive the full experience.

Individuals with complex communication needs must master certain critical communication skills if they are to function independently in the home, community, school and/or vocational setting. This training discusses how to teach critical expressive communication skills (requesting reinforcers, requesting help, requesting a break, acceptance and rejection) and critical receptive communications skills (waiting, following directions, schedule following and transitions between activities). Critical expressive communication skills are skills individuals need to convey important messages to others. These skills are crucial because if a person cannot calmly and effectively communicate wants and needs, contextually inappropriate behaviors may be demonstrated. Critical receptive communication skills relate to a person’s ability to understand important messages from others. Failure to understand such messages may be distressing and/or dangerous for the individual.

This one day training focuses on why these nine skills are the highest priority for teaching and how we teach them. Strategies covered are relevant for anyone with complex communication needs, regardless of their communication modality (PECS, speech, sign, SGD). Teaching Critical Communication Skills is a must for anyone working and/or living with people with complex communication needs.

Many people with autism have difficulty acquiring language related to expressing their emotions and also identifying emotions in other people. In this workshop we will evaluate and challenge traditional approaches to teaching learners with autism to communicate about their emotions, as well as respond to such language from other people.

B.F. Skinner provided an important guide to the analysis of language in his book, Verbal Behavior. In this book, he stresses the critical value of focusing on the function of various aspects of communication. His analysis includes a very interesting section on what he termed “private events”. That is, how do we learn to talk about things that happen inside of us? In this workshop, we will review traditional approaches to teaching children with autism to communicate about their emotions as well as respond to such language from other people. Participants will be asked to consider how they currently teach various lessons related to emotions and then plan to incorporate Skinner’s analysis into the design of effective lessons. These lessons may involve very young children or teenagers and adults who continue to have difficulty with this topic. We also will look at a very important part of language that helps communicative partners better understand the perspective of someone who is attempting to communicate. We will review why this area is so difficult for those with autism and suggest teaching strategies that may lead to successful acquisition of these complex language skills.
