1.

Project  title  (5  to  8  words):    Virtual  Computing  Lab  Pilot

2.

Brief  description  of  project:

The  goal  of  this  joint  project  between  the  School  of  Engineering  and  Applied  Science  and  the

Farmer  School  of  Business  is  to  pilot  using  virtual  desktop  technology  to  create  a  Virtual  Computing

Lab  allowing  to  students  access  to  the  software  that  they  need  class  on  their  own  laptops.    The

Virtual  Computer  Lab  (VCL)  would  allow  faculty  to  run  their  classes  through  software-‐based  activities

with  students  using  their  own  laptops  connected  to  the  wireless  network  in  any  classroom,  rather

than  in  a  computer  lab.    Students  would  be  able  to  access  the  VCL  outside  of  class  in  order  to  do

(2)

their  homework.

Most  Miami  students  have  purchased  their  own  laptops.    However,  the  majority  of  software

purchased  by  Miami  is  only  licensed  for  installation  on  Miami  owned  computers.    This  results  in

increased  technology  costs  because  students  are  not  able  leverage  the  laptops  that  they  have

purchased  forcing  divisions  to  purchase  computers  for  classrooms  in  order  to  be  able  to  teach

classes  requiring  interaction  with  computers.

The  VCL  would  allow  80  simultaneous  virtual  computers  to  run  on  the  run  system  and  would  be

powered  by  software  from  VMWare,  Inc.    VMware,  Inc.  is  the  industry  leader  in  virtual  computing.    IT

Services,  SEAS  and  FSB  have  expertise  in  installing  and  maintaining  VMWare  software.

In  order  for  Miami  to  stay  competitive  with  our  competition,  it  is  important  for  us  to  create  a  VCL

for  our  students.    VLC’s  are  being  implemented  at  universities  around  the  country.    Perdue  University

has  stated  that  they  will  be  getting  rid  of  all  computer  labs  and  moving  to  virtual  computing  labs.

http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9175932/Purdue_University_plans_for_post_PC_era

3.

Impact  on  students  served  and/or  evidence  of  student  need  -‐  include  the  number  or  percentage  of

students  or  courses  served:

The  class  in  the  Farmer  School  of  Business  that  will  use  the  VCL  would  be  MIS  235.    This  class

annually  enrolls  around  1,000  students.    In  the  School  of  Engineering  and  Applied  Science,  the  VCL

would  be  used  by  classes  in  all  four  departments:  Chemical  and  Paper  Engineering,  Computer

Science  and  Software  Engineering,  Electrical  and  Computer  Engineering,  and  Mechanical  and

Manufacturing  Engineering  encompassing  1,000+  students.

4.

Justification  for  funding  this  project:

Briefly  describe  additional  funds  available  for  this  project,  if  any:

The  Farmer  School  of  Business  will  be  contributing  two  existing  servers  to  the  project,  each

worth  $3,000.    They  will  also  be  contributing  storage  space  on  their  SAN  worth  $1,500.    The  School

of  Engineering  and  Applied  Science  will  be  contributing  a  server  worth  $6,000.        The  project  includes

a  request  for  memory  for  each  of  the  servers  to  allow  them  accommodate  the  80  virtual  computers

that  would  run  on  the  VCL.

5.

What  happens  to  the  project  in  year  2  and  beyond?    Will  there  be  any  ongoing  costs  such  as

software  or  hardware  maintenance,  supplies,  staffing,  etc?  How  these  will  be  funded?

If  the  project  is  successful  than  we  would  look  to  expand  the  use  of  VCL  to  include  other  divisions  at

Miami.    We  would  work  with  IT  Services  to  see  if  it  would  make  sense  to  provide  the  service

centrally.

(3)

6.

How  will  you  assess  the  project?

Examples:  Identify  one  or  more  expected  project  outcomes  that  indicate  project  progress  and  completion.

How  will  you  assess  the  value  to  students?    Measures  of  enhanced  student  learning  or  usage  are  highly

desired.    These  items  should  be  chosen  to  facilitate  independent  evaluation  of  project  completion  and  value  to

students.

The  project  will  be  assessed  by  tracking  the  number  of  students  and  faculty  who  use  the  VCL.    We

would  also  track  the  duration  and  frequency  of  use  of  the  VCL.    Surveys  would  be  sent  to  students

who  have  used  the  VCL  after  hours  and  to  faculty  and  their  students  who  use  as  mobile  computer

lab.

7.

Attach  any  other  supporting  information  regarding  this  request.

Examples:    Letters  of  support  from  the  Department  chair(s)  if  curriculum  is  being  changed  or  from  Dick  Pettitt

for  the  Space  Utilization  Group,  if  your  proposal  includes  requesting  changes  in  rooms  or  other  spaces.

Your system may support multiple memory configurations based on the density, quantity and type of memory modules installed.

Please consult the documentation for your specific system.

Q:

Will my system recognize the maximum upgrade?

A: Possibly

The amount of memory your Windows computer will recognize depends on two factors:

the maximum capacity your computer hardware can handle and the version of Windows your computer uses.

The most memory the 32-bit versions of Windows will see (and utilize) is only 3GB or 3.5GB, if your computure hardware can handle it. The 64-bit version of Windows can address even more memory. Find out more at http://www.crucial.com/kb/answer.aspx?qid=4251.

Q:

What memory goes into my computer, and will a faster speed be backward-compatible?

Q:

How much memory can my computer handle?

Do I have to install matching pairs?

Q:

Does my computer support dual-channel memory?

Q:

Does my computer support ECC memory?

240-pin DIMM

Approximately 5.25 in. by 1.18 in. (133.35 mm by 30 mm)

A dual inline memory module (DIMM) consists of a number of memory components (usually black) that are attached to a printed circuit board (usually green). The gold pins on

the bottom of the DIMM provide a connection between the module and a socket on a larger printed circuit board. The pins on the front and back of a DIMM are not connected to

each other.

240-pin DIMMs are used to provide DDR2 SDRAM memory for desktop computers. DDR2 is a leading-edge generation of memory with an improved architecture that allows it to

transmit data very fast.

Each 240-pin DIMM provides a 64-bit data path (72-bit for ECC or registered or Fully Buffered modules). (The Ballistix™ and Ballistix Tracer™ high-performance memory do not

come in 72-bit or registered modules.)

Standard DDR2 240-pin DIMMs are available in DDR2 PC2-3200 SDRAM, DDR2 PC2-4200 SDRAM, DDR2 PC2-5300 SDRAM, and PC2-6400 SDRAM.

To use DDR2 memory, your system motherboard must have 240-pin DIMM slots and a DDR2-enabled chipset. A DDR2 SDRAM DIMM will not fit into a standard SDRAM DIMM

socket or a DDR DIMM socket.

The number of black components on a 240-pin DIMM can vary, but it always has 120 pins on the front and 120 pins on the back, for a total of 240. 240-pin DIMMs are

approximately 5.25 inches long and 1.18 inches high, though the heights can vary. While 240-pin DDR2 DIMMs, 184-pin DDR DIMMs, and 168-pin DIMMs are approximately the

same size, 240-pin DIMMs and 184-pin DIMMs have only one notch within the row of pins. The notch in a 240-pin DDR2 DIMM is closer toward the center of the module.

Ballistix and Ballistix Tracer 240-pin DIMMs

Our high-performance Ballistix 240-pin DIMMs come in DDR2 PC2-5300 SDRAM, DDR2 PC2-6400 SDRAM, and DDR2 PC2-8000 SDRAM. The Ballistix Tracer illuminated,

activity-indicating high-performance 240-pin DIMM comes in SDRAM, DDR2 PC2-6400 SDRAM, and DDR2 PC2-8000 SDRAM

A copy of the EULA is located at the OARnet website (www.oar.net/services/vmware/docs/Ohio_EULA.pdf). The terms of the EULA on the OARnet website supersedes any click to accept EULA embedded in the Software downloaded from VMware. The terms of the EULA located at the OARnet website are incorporated by reference as if fully rewritten herein. Where applicable, the defined terms in the EULA shall have the same meaning in this Order Form. This Order Form shall not be amended in any manner (e.g., act, custom, e-mail, etc.) and no other agreement between the parties shall be effected except pursuant to a writing signed by OARnet and End User.

The parties agree as follows:

Upon payment of the applicable fees through purchase order or internal funds transfer by End User to OARnet, and subject to the terms of the Virtualization Program Order Form and the EULA, End User shall have the right to deploy the Software selected in Attachment 1, solely within the United States. There are two options which are available to Higher Education: Option 1 is the purchase of new software, which includes the license and support and service for the products shown in Section A of Attachment 1. All support and service acquired under this agreement is at the platinum level. Option 2 is a conversion program where Higher Education can convert their maintenance (SnS) costs from an existing VMware product to the costs set forth in Attachment 1. This option is only available on non-prepaid maintenance for the virtualization products identified in Section B of Attachment 1. All new and converted software on this order, will receive VMware’s platinum level support (7X24), for the term and price shown in Attachment 1.

All billing under this agreement will be on an annual basis. This agreement offers two options with regard to maintenance (SnS) service in Attachment 1. The first option is to select the term for maintenance and if more than one year term is selected you have the option to be billed in advance for all the years in the term or be billed each year for the maintenance. We understand that your budget and funding will determine your choice.

Purchase Orders should be submitted with this Order Form.

All checks should be made payable to The Ohio State University-OARnet.

Terms and Conditions

1. Payment Terms A. Product Rates:

End User shall pay to OARnet the amounts set forth in Attachment 1 for the Products and Services therein. B. Payment and Fees:

Payment is due upon 30 days of receipt of invoice. Payments beyond 30 days past due will be subject to a $50.00 late charge. Accounts that are not collectable by OARnet may be turned over to an outside collection agency for collection. If your account is turned over for collection, End User agrees to pay the company a “Processing and Collection” Fee of not less than $50 or more than $150.

C. Failure to Pay:

Pursuant to Section 2 below, OARnet may terminate this Agreement or EULA and demand End User to no longer use the Product, upon the failure of End User to pay charges when due.
