here has been a big upsurge in recent years of getting

English teaching out of the classroom and into the out-doors. While people can now study English while cooking, playing golf and even hiking, the latest movement in Tokyo is for kids to practice and learn the language while playing the world’s most popular sport — soccer. Not only that, but players and their friends can mix and make friends while simultaneously saving their parents money on juku!

The British Football Academy (BFA) is providing the opportunity. Jon DAY, co-founder and Communications Director of Footy Japan Ltd., which runs BFA, explains the company’s philosophy of making football education available to all children regardless of race, culture, language, gender and religion. “Many of the international schools in Kanto run their sports programs over very short seasons meaning the kids will play basketball for a few weeks, then switch to ten-nis, then football, then swimming, etc.,” Jon says. “This works

well to expose the children to a vari-ety of different sports at an early age, but it doesn’t cater particularly well to those kids who are already budding football players, or those who simply enjoy football more than other sports.”

Veritable international social hub

But while the children are competitive on the field, they have the chance to get friendly off the pitch. “Football is the common language amongst all BFA members and this com-mon denominator unites all of our children — it really is a beautiful thing,” Jon says. “The same goes for parents. At many of BFA’s schools there is a very festive atmosphere and entire families come to socialize with other families.

BFA doubles up as a veritable international social hub, affording parents the opportunity to mix with other parents, Japanese and foreign. “The fact that the kids are having so much fun during their sessions has a knock-on effect on the parents both Japanese and foreign — all of who become more inclined to socialize with each other and form lasting bonds, which is great to see,” Jon says. “The Academy’s mission since day one has been to make ‘Football Fun For All.’ I coaches who have all received accreditation from the English

Football Association (the FA). In contrast to many other organi-zations, participation is the easy part — “the only prerequisites for joining the Academy are a positive attitude and a big smile.”

With kids from different countries all playing the same game, how are differences in language dealt with? Jon says the Academy is made up of more than 30% Japanese children, some of who speak English fluently but many of who speak little or no English. “After a few weeks with us, their English will have improved demonstrably,” Jon explains. “A big rea-son for this is that the kids are enjoying themselves while in an English-speaking environment. The fact that English is not their first language does not inhibit their ability to be taught football. Japanese parents have been quick to realize that BFA is a far more economical and healthy option to, for example,

juku (cram school) — the kids are out in the fresh air, getting

exercise, mixing with kids from every corner of the globe and learning some English at the same time.”

While there is always a lot of positive yelling and scream-ing on the pitch, much of the genuine feedback is received when a child has left the country. “It’s really moving to hear that something you’ve worked hard to create has touched and benefited a young life,” Jon says. “A lot of the time we receive e-mails from parents who have left Japan saying how BFA really enhanced their family’s experience of Japan.”

One memorable story Jon recalls was of an exceptional young player who had been involved with a J-League junior team and had quit because he wasn’t enjoying the regimental style of training. He joined the Academy and quickly learnt that before everything, football can be fun. “He was with us for about two years and is currently with a different J-League team truly enjoying his football — mission accomplished!”

The biggest issue BFA faces is securing new locations. Despite Japan co-hosting the Football World Cup in 2002, Jon believes the nation’s grassroots football infrastructure is years behind the West. “Open spaces, let alone football fields are very hard to come by,” he says. “We work closely with pri-vate organizations such as international schools, as securing public venues is almost impossible with lengthy registration processes and lottery systems with no guarantee of success.”

Where do the future goals of BFA lie? “Our goal is very simply to continue to make the very best in football education available to all the young lives in Japan who might benefit from it.” BFA の将来 しょうらい の 目標 もくひょう は？「私 わたし た ちの目標 もくひょう は、日 に 本 ほ ん に住 す む若 わ か 者 も の す べてのためにな るようなサッカ ー教育 きょういく に最 さ い 大 だ い 限 げ ん の努 ど 力 りょく をし続 つ づ け ていくことだけ です」。

This exhibition commemorates the 550th anniversary of Edo castle, built in 1457 by OOTA Doukan. Later it became the residence of the TOKUGAWA Shougunate and was the political center of Japan for 260 years as well as being the symbol of Edo, one of the largest cities in the world at the time. Now, the present Emperor lives on this site. Approximately 250 items will be on display including paintings on beautiful folded screens, a picture scroll, a construction planning map, a large-scale model, and many other interesting items that will give you a full picture of Edo castle.

A visual magazine called “Weekly Artist Japan Revision” will be on sale from January 9 at book stores throughout the nation. One of the magazine’s key features is how the editors select one world famous Japanese art master in each edition and introduce his life, style, works, tips about how to review them, and other information. In their first issue KATSUSHI-KA Hokusai, a Ukiyoe artist in the Edo era who greatly influ-enced French artists such as van GOGH, is introduced. After the first issue, a broad line-up of artists from many different fields will be featured including YOKOYAMA Taikan, HIGASHIYAMA Kaii, OGATA Kourin, TOSHUSAI Sharaku, and others. First issue: ¥290. Second and later issues: ¥560.

A daruma doll is an ornament shaped like egg with a human face and no hands or legs. The daruma doll is made of paper and painted red. Its base is designed to be heavy so that it can sit upright if it is pushed over. The daruma doll is supposed to signify that you can get up again even if you fail, and is regarded as a good luck charm. This memorial service is a tra-ditional event where people offer thanks for the old doll that they kept for a year, and while burning it, pray for the well-being of their families, for business prosperity, and hold a mass. They then buy a new doll. It is a spectacular sight to see a solemn mass involving the burning of some tens of thou-sands of daruma dolls. A daruma fair and bean throwing event is also held. Based on the theme of Greek Mythology, a great variety of orchids from 25 countries and regions will be collected and displayed in one place to compete in this contest. Awards will be given for the best orchids including the “Japan Grand Prix” awarded for the most beautiful flower, and for the best fra-grance. Prizes will be awarded in six categories. A special exhibition by six ikebana (flower arranging) associations will also be held there. From February 24 to March 4 at Tokyo Dome. Tokyo Dome Hotel is providing an accommodation plan that includes a ticket to the exhibition.

This time three CDs have been released: “Alladin and the magic lamp/The red shoes,” “The flying car-pet/Nobody’s boy” and “A little princess/The blue bird.” These stories can be used for “good taste” education for chil-dren who do not like reading books. There are 50 syllables in the Japanese language but each personified character insists “I am the most important charac-ter.” The small character “tsu,” which is not pronounced, is fooled by the other characters. As the “tsu” thought that he was unnecessary, he left the fifty syllable village. Then, Japanese language descended into great chaos so that hardly anyone could make themselves understood. This book, creat-ed in fable style, hints that everyone has their own role and is very important. The theme is also related to the current bully-ing problem. Since September 2003, TechnoKids, a Tokyo-based information technology (IT) training company run by Canadian Shelley BEARSE, has been offering a

unique computer curriculum package designed to offer a fun way for children to learn about technolo-gy, increase their computer literacy, and enable them to practice their English at the same time. How? Well, for schools that want to teach kids about IT but do not have the resources to do so, TechnoKids

In 2005 and 2006, TechnoKids has trained about 120 youngsters, the majority of them Japanese schoolchildren, aged from 4 to 14 years old. TechnoKids also teaches big kids and the company’s corporate customers include credit card companies and major international banks. Customers are currently both Japanese and foreigners living in Tokyo with ages ranging from 4~84.

While technology is something we cannot escape from in today’s world, Shelley says she likes to show people how they can use it most effectively in their daily lives. “Technology is a tool, not a hindrance. We receive enquiries from people, both private and corporations, asking ‘If you can teach kids, can you teach me?’ This has become a common occurrence.”

What kind of feedback does Shelley receive from children and parents? “The kids, whether native Japanese or native English speakers all agree on one term — cool!” she exclaims. “Parents are amazed that their 5-year-old is learn-ing PowerPoint, a presentation tool, and are convinclearn-ing the children to show them how. One student created a fantastic PowerPoint presentation in which she stated she loves com-puters but hates computer software. Hmmmm ... I think Bill GATES would agree that PowerPoint is software, but isn’t it great to see that the kids aren’t seeing it that way?”

Students don’t only learn about IT. Instruction is carried out in English — with some Japanese translation where necessary — and all work produced is also done in English, so students naturally pick up English while they learn.

The children are speaking English language in the class — most of them have never done that — and they are doing this in a no-stress environment, in fact most of them probably don’t even realize they are doing this,” Shelley says. “In 10 years, I would like to see TechnoKids or a program similar to it, as part of the Japanese public school curriculum, or as an after school club.”

Author: You know that a huge number of people in the

world do not have enough food to eat? Even if a hungry per-son steals a piece of bread in order to survive from a house-hold that has too much food, he will be branded a criminal. CIA: Why can they continue to bully the weak for so long? Author: As the proverb “The cornered mouse attacking the

cat” says, people who are driven into a corner rise and fight at the risk of their lives. But people in authority are wily old foxes. Author: In the early 1970s, 29 members of the Red Army,

which was formed by young Japanese people who wanted to start a revolution, gathered on Mount Haruna in Gunma pre-fecture. There, under the guise of “reviewing,” a group lynch-ing was carried out in which 12 people were killed one after another. The members participated in the brutal murders out of fear that if they didn’t, they themselves would be targeted. The basis of bulling is basically the same. CIA: How do you think bullying can be stopped? Author: Stronger people justify their power and

step on the weak, and this makes them feel satisfied with their power. For them, the existence of bullying targets adds to their enjoyment. No students can stand up against the head bullies. On the contrary, many students obey what the head bully says and join in the bullying. The real problem of bullying lies with the students who do nothing and just look.

To schools: Bullying should be treated like molesting. We

advise you to repeatedly broadcast an announcement at school such as “Please report to a teacher whenever you see bullying or are bullied,” just like the chikan (molester) announcements on trains. And do not let students who are alleged to have committed bullying go home until the problem is solved.

To parents whose child is being bullied: let your child
