IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
It is your responsibility to be completely familiar with the WARNINGS, CAUTIONS, and NOTICES
described in this Electrical Schematics Manual. These highlighted messages advise against the use of
specific service methods or procedures which can result in personal injury, damage to the equipment, or
unsafe operating conditions. It is important to understand that these messages are not exhaustive. Gillig
Corporation could not possibly know and evaluate all conceivable methods in which service might be
done, nor could they advise the service trade of all possible consequences of each method. Therefore,
Gillig has not undertaken such a broad evaluation. Accordingly, anyone who uses a service procedure
or tool which is not recommended by Gillig Corporation must first be thoroughly satisfied that neither
personal safety nor equipment integrity will be jeopardized by the service method selected.
The WARNINGS, CAUTIONS, and NOTICES appear at appropriate places of the manual in special
print. It is critical to the safety of service personnel and the coach that these warnings are diligently
observed, especially while undertaking any of the procedures presented in this manual. WARNINGS,
CAUTIONS, and NOTICES appear as follows:
8
WARNING
Appears when an operating or service procedure, if not correctly
fol-lowed, could result in personal injury or fatality.
CAUTION
Appears when an operating or service procedure, if not strictly observed,
could result in injury to you or damage to the equipment.
NOTICE
Highlights an operating or service procedure which is essential for
proper operation, maintenance, or repair.
VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER (VIN)
The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and other information about the coach is found on the
Manufacturer’s ID plate which is located on the door of the main electrical panel above and to the left of
the driver. The VIN serves as a legal identification number and appears on the vehicle certificate of title
and registration papers. You may be asked to provide the VIN to Gillig Service or Parts personnel in
order for them to properly investigate and answer your inquiry.

The electrical schematics and wiring diagrams in this manual are arranged in chapters covering the type
of system in which they are employed. An extensive table of contents will help you identify the
draw-ings or circuits included in this manual. A cross reference listing follows the Table of Contents to
correlate drawing numbers with page numbers, so that you can find a drawing if you only know the
engineering drawing number. Page numbers are consecutive thru the manual. Heavy tabbed divider
pages separate the chapters to assist your search.
Information in this manual is only for the Gillig Low Floor coaches designated on the front cover
and again at the top of the Table of Contents page. Do not use this manual as a basis for trouble
shooting electrical systems or circuits for any other Gillig coaches in your fleet.
WIRE COLOR IDENTIFICATION
Wire Color. Colors are abbreviated as follows:
TROUBLE SHOOTING EQUIPMENT
Volt-Ohmmeter (VOM). A volt-ohmmeter is a single test device in which the functions of both the
voltmeter and ohmmeter are combined. It may be used to check voltage, check for a short to ground,
check for continuity in a circuit, or to check to verify a ground.
Voltmeter. A DC voltmeter is used to check the DC voltage to ground. There are two test leads: the
negative lead, which is connected to the ground side of the circuit; and the positive lead, which should
be connected to the hot side of the circuit.
10
Ohmmeter. An ohmmeter may be used to measure resistance between two points of a circuit.
CAUTION
An ohmmeter must only be used on de-energized circuits. An energized
circuit may cause meter damage or result in inaccurate resistance
measurement.
Jumper Wire. A jumper wire may be used in trouble shooting procedures to bypass certain circuit
components or circuit segments where an open is suspected. A jumper is a length of wire with clips or
terminals used to connect two points of a circuit.
WARNING
Do not use a jumper wire to bypass high resistance loads, as this would
short to ground and may cause damage to the circuit and/or injury to
maintenance personnel.
TROUBLE SHOOTING PROCEDURES
Trouble shooting is a systematic approach to solving problems. Because of the many components and
connections in an electrical circuit, it is necessary to follow a step-by-step procedure for an accurate
diagnosis of any electrical problem.
First, verify the problem or complaint by operating the circuit in which the problem is suspected. Once
the problem is identified and verified, then refer to the Service Manual and the Electrical Schematics
manual to inspect the schematic for the circuit in question.
Next, trace the circuit and redraw it if necessary. This will help identify the connections, splices,
grounds, and components in the problem circuit.
After tracing the circuit, systematically test for faulty components, connections, or grounds to identify
the problem.
Finally, when the problem is isolated and a particular element of the circuit is determined to be the cause
of the problem, make the necessary replacement or repair. Then operate the circuit to verify the repair.
SHORT CIRCUITS
Many electrical system problems are caused by short circuits. A short circuit is either a feed circuit
which has been completed to ground before it reaches the intended operating unit or a ground circuit that
is grounded prematurely.
To diagnose a short to ground use a VOM to test for continuity to ground. First, disconnect the circuit
from power and ground. Next, connect the VOM between the circuit and ground. There will be
conti-nuity if the circuit is shorted to ground. To isolate the short, open elements of the circuit one at a time
until continuity is lost. The short is in the last element opened or in the segment of the circuit beyond
the last element opened. To pinpoint the short, test each element of the isolated segment.
A tripped circuit breaker or blown fuse usually indicates a short to ground. Use a VOM to isolate the
short. First, turn off all elements of the circuit receiving power through the circuit breaker or fuse and
disconnect all loads. Turn on power to the fuse, then connect one lead of the VOM to the power supply
side of the circuit protector and the other lead to ground. The VOM should indicate power. Next,
disconnect the ground lead of the VOM and connect it to the load side of the fuse. If the VOM does not
indicate voltage, the short is in the disconnected equipment. If the VOM indicates voltage, the short is
in the wiring. To pinpoint the short, disconnect circuit elements one at a time until the VOM does not
indicate voltage. The short will be in the segment connecting the last element.
OPEN CIRCUITS
Many electrical system failures are caused by an open circuit. An open circuit is one in which power
flow stops because of an interrupted or incomplete circuit path. An open circuit is caused by an
im-proper ground, a loose or broken wire, a broken connector, a poor terminal contact, an open or faulty
component, or a fuse or circuit breaker opened because of a short or overload.
Testing to isolate an open circuit can be done by using a jumper wire to bypass a suspected open
ele-ment. If the circuit operates with the jumper in place when the power is applied, then the open is in the
segment of the circuit which was jumped or bypassed.
Another procedure to pinpoint an open element in a circuit is to test for power along the circuit using a
VOM. If the VOM indicates power at one point in the circuit, then is moved along to another point of
the circuit and does not indicate power, the circuit is open between the two points.
A third test, again using a VOM, can be conducted to detect an open in a component. First disconnect
the component from the circuit. Then connect the leads of the VOM to the component. If there is no
continuity, an open exists in the component.

WELDING PRECAUTIONS
Prior to performing any welding operation on the coach, sensitive electrical components must be
pro-tected from damage. The sequence below must be followed in the order shown or damage to the voltage
equalizer, multiplexer, or any of the electronic control units (ECU’s) may result. When the welding
operation is completed, the components must be reconnected in the reverse order of disconnection.
CAUTION
Ensure the following precautions are accomplished prior to welding
anywhere or anything on the coach, as permanent damage to electronic
components may result.
1.
Place the main battery cut-off switch into the OFF position.
2.
Disconnect the battery ground from the voltage equalizer.
3.
Disconnect the battery cables from the batteries.
4.
Disconnect the power connectors from the ECU’s and electronic equipment (ABS, engine,
transmission, I/O DINEX multiplexing system, wheelchair ramp, destination sign,
communi-cation equipment, voice annunciation system, communicommuni-cation network (such as SAE J1708,
J1939, etc.), surveillance system, and other electronic devices.
5.
Disconnect the main power fuse from the multiplexer circuit (located in the lower drivers
console).
The welding ground cable should be attached to a chassis member as close to the weld site as possible,
consistent with good welding practices. Do not connect welding cables to, or weld on, control
compo-nents. Protect components from heat, sparks, and spatter, while welding.
