Las Vegas defeats New Orleans 8-7 in 11 innings (Friday, August 22): The 51s defeated the Zephyrs 8-7 in 11 innings in game three of the four-game series before a Fireworks Night crowd of 7,586 at Cashman Field.

Las Vegas offense: The 51s recorded 14 hits and rallied from a 5-0 deficit. Second baseman Daniel Muno (3-for-6) delivered a walk-off RBI single with one out in the 11th inning. Shortstop Matt Reynolds was 4-for-4, walk, double, HBP, stolen base, two runs scored; catcher Kevin Plawecki was 1-for-3, three walks, two runs scored and right fielder Cory

NEW YORK METS NICKNAME: The “METS” Nickname: The name Mets was judged by club owner Mrs. Joan Payson

as the one that best met five basic criteria: 1. It met public and press acceptance; 2. It was closely related to the team’s corporate name (Metropolitan Baseball Club, Inc.); 3. It was descriptive of the Metropolitan area; 4. It had a brevity that delighted copy readers everywhere; 5. It had historical background, referring to the Metropolitans of the 19th century American Association….other names considered included: Rebels, Skyliners, NYBs, Burros (for the five boroughs), Continentals, Avengers...as well as Jets and Islanders, names that would eventually find their way into the New York sports scene…the Mets inaugural season was in 1962.

Langer is in his 15th season behind the mike…he is a nine-time recipient of the Nevada Sportscaster of the Year award (2003, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013) presented by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association…also worked a total of 30 Montreal Expos games during the 2003 and 2004 seasons…in 2006, Langer was hired for additional major league duty by the Baltimore Orioles and broadcast 10 games on a fill-in basis during the course of the season…has also broadcast selected Los Angeles Dodgers Spring Training games in March of 2006 and in Arizona in March of 2008 and with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2009 and 2010 and Chicago White Sox in 2012-14...in 2013, Langer also completed his second season as the radio “play-by-play voice” for the UNLV Football team on the UNLV/IMG Sports Network.

Blum Broadcast Booth” prior to the 2013 season to honor the 51s Special Assistant to the General Manager…“The Blummer” passed away on July 22, 2012 at the age of 91...also served as the play-by-play voice for Stars/51s baseball in selected seasons from 1985-2005 & 2008-10…his company, Robert J. Blum Productions, also produced Las Vegas Triple-A professional baseball games broadcast on radio and television for several seasons.

51s Manager Wally Backman: He was named the 22nd manager (January 7, 2013) in the history of the Las Vegas franchise (1983 - present, 32 seasons). Career Summary: In his third season as manager on the Triple-A level and his fifth season with the Mets organization since his playing days…career minor league managerial record in 12 seasons is 760-687 (.525)…led the Lancaster Jethawks (Single-A) of the California League to a 86-54 record during the 2004 campaign and was named Minor League Manager of the Year by The Sporting News.

Minor League Coaching Career: Compiled a 760-687 (.525) record in 12 seasons as a minor league manager in the

Chicago White Sox, Arizona and New York Mets organizations from 2001-04 & 2010-present and three seasons in the Independent League (2007-09)…in 2013, he guided Triple-A Las Vegas to the second-best record in the 16-team PCL with an 81-63 (.563) mark…the 51s advanced to the PCL Playoffs for the first time in 11 seasons (2002)…in 2012,

Professional Playing Career: Selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 17th round of the 1968 amateur draft…played in the minor leagues with St. Petersburg (1968-69), Modesto (1970) and batted .304 with 21 home runs and 96 RBI (led the California League), Arkansas (1971) and Triple-A Tulsa (1971).

Frank Viola is in his first season as the pitching coach at Triple-A Las Vegas and also enters his fourth season overall

Minor League Coaching Career: Spent the last two seasons as the pitching coach at Single-A Savannah of the South Atlantic League (2012-13)…in 2013, the Sand Gnats compiled an overall record of 77-61 (.558) and defeated Hagerstown (3-games-to-1) to capture the SAL Championship…began his coaching career in 2011 with the Mets as the pitching coach with Single-A Brooklyn of the New York-Penn League. Playing Career: Enjoyed an outstanding 15-year Major League career with Minnesota (1982-89), New York Mets

(1989-91), Boston (1992-94), Cincinnati (1995) and Toronto (1996)…the left-hander appeared in 421 career games and posted a 176-150 record with a 3.73 ERA…struck out 1,844 batters in 2,836.1 innings pitched…the three-time All-Star went 20-12 with a 2.67 ERA in 249.2 innings pitched for the Mets in 1990…was a member of the 1987 World Series Champion Minnesota Twins and the World Series MVP that same season (2-1, 3.72 ERA vs. St. Louis)…won the Cy Young Award in 1988 with a career-best 24-7 record and a 2.64 ERA in 255.1 innings pitched…also posted 18 wins in a season twice in 1984 (18-12) and 1985 (18-14)…was selected by Minnesota in the second round of the 1981 Major League Baseball Draft.

Las Vegas 51s/New York Mets Affiliation: The 51s, on September 17, 2012, announced a “new” two-year Player Development Contract (PDC) with the New York Mets, member of the National League East…the two-year PDC with the Mets will run through the 2014 season…the Las Vegas Stars/51s

have captured the PCL Championship twice (1986 & 1988) and appeared in the playoffs nine times (18-26 record, .409), last appeared in 2013.
