Teaching Certifications
Sam Houston State University is the oldest teacher training institution in the state of Texas with approved teacher education programs. The College of Education (COE) is one of six colleges that make up the University. Within COE, education programs are offered in each of the five departments, directly or indirectly involved in public education. The five departments are: (1) Curriculum and Instruction, (2) Educational Leadership and Counseling, (3) Health and Kinesiology, (4) Language, Literacy, and Special Populations, and (5) Library Science. Programs in the COE offer
undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, certificate, masters, and doctorate programs. Programs may be reviewed by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB), University of Collegiate Education Administration (UCEA), or others; accredited by Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), or, National Council for
Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
All programs devoted to the instruction and preparation of PK-16 learners are accredited by a special program association (SPA) specific to the program. Education programs are also offered in three colleges within the University, but outside the COE, the College of Sciences (COS), the College of Fine Arts and Mass Communication (CFAMC), and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS).
The College of Education, Educator Preparation Program is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) through the Texas Accountability System. Sixteen of the educator preparation programs in the College of Education have earned the highest category of national recognition, earning distinction for their impact on K-12 student learning and retention in the field.

The Sam Houston State University (SHSU) College of Education has partnered with many school districts to provide students the field experience necessary for the completion of their degree. These districts range from Buffalo ISD in the north to Brazosport ISD in the south and from Brenham ISD in the west to Livingston ISD in the east. About 75% of SHSU graduates are hired by one of these partnership districts after graduation.
The Educator Preparation Program at SHSU is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC).

3. Complete and submit the application, along with the nonrefundable application fee or the application fee waiver request.
4. Pay the undergraduate application fee. 5. Have your official HS transcript sent to SHSU. 6. Send your official ACT/SAT scores to SHSU. 7. Apply for scholarships and financial aid at SHSU
through ScholarX.
8. Students who are interested in obtaining their teacher certification should apply for admission with the above listed instructions.
TRANSFER STUDENTS SHOULD:
1. Make sure you meet SHSU admission requirements. 2. Review the SHSU articulation agreements with other
institutions: Cooperative Degree Requirements, Transfer Equivalency Guide, Joint Admissions where students benefit from a special alliance between community colleges and SHSU, Time Compressed Degree to put your college degree on the fast track, and Common Course Numbering System guidelines for transferring classes.
3. Have your official transcripts sent to SHSU.
4. Check with the SHSU Financial Aid and Scholarships department to see if you qualify for a Transfer
Scholarship.
5. Upon admission, attend the SHSU transfer orientation.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

Interdisciplinary Studies (4th - 8th)
Students interested in teaching grades 4 - 8 will also major in Interdisciplinary Studies, but will minor in the preferred teaching field such as Science, Mathematics, Social Studies, or Language Arts. The Department of Curriculum and Instruction offers students the ability to pursue a Middle Level Education Certification Program leading to the Bachelor of Science degree (B.S.) with a major in Interdisciplinary Studies. The student picks one of three areas in the MLE Program in which to concentrate.
Below are the BS Degree with 4-8 Certification and ESL Supplement:
• English-Language Arts-Reading/Social Studies (able to teach in either/both fields) • Mathematics/Science (able to teach in
either/both fields)
• Mathematics (able to teach in one field)
It is a field-based program, with students spending extensive time in middle schools. The program is designed to give students the necessary content knowledge and skills and the necessary pedagogical knowledge and skills needed to be an effective middle grades teacher.
To be certified to teach in middle grades in the state of Texas an individual must:
• Possess an undergraduate degree • Pass the appropriate TExES examination
for their content field
• Pass the appropriate TExES Pedagogy and Professional Responsibility examination • Apply for certification with the Texas State
Board of Educator Certification Undergraduate Degrees for Teaching 4th-8th:
Teaching: Grades 4-8
Major: Interdisciplinary Studies, with teaching field in Math, Math / Science, or English Language Arts/ Social Studies. Teaching: Special Education (EC-12)
Major: Interdisciplinary Studies Teaching: Grades 8-12
Major: Teaching field (Math, History, etc.) Minor: Secondary Education
HIGH SCHOOL
(8th - 12th grade)
Students interested in teaching grades 8 -12 will major in the preferred subject (teaching field) and will minor in Secondary Education.
Teacher Candidates should:
• Select a major to serve as a teaching content area • Select a minor in secondary education that includes
24 semester hours including six hours of student teaching
• Complete a majority of their content area courses before beginning certification course work.
Students seeking secondary education certification are encouraged to contact the College of Education’s department of Curriculum and Instruction.
