Bap sm of the Lord
The first reading is one of the four servant songs in Isaiah, foretelling that the Messiah will be a servant, not a con-quering hero of other messianic expecta ons. The Lord says that his servant is the one on whom he has put his spirit, his chosen one with whom he is pleased. The Servant is to bring jus ce to the na ons, to open the eyes of the blind and to free the prisoners from confinement. In the Acts of the Apostles, Peter goes to the house of Cornelius in re-sponse to a vision from the Lord. Peter recognizes that the Holy Spirit accepts everyone that fears the Lord and acts uprightly. Peter proclaims the good news of salva on in Christ Jesus to Cornelius and his household, beginning the public ministry to the Gen les. Jesus’ bap sm by John the Bap st is recorded in Mark’s gospel. Two things emerge in its descrip on. One is that we learn Jesus is from God, even called by God “my beloved Son” and the second is that the holy man, John the Bap st, claims himself unworthy saying, “I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his (Jesus’) sandals.” Like Jesus, we have been bap zed and are called to fellowship with God. This fellowship is made real in our lives when we listen to God’s commands.

The Baptism of the Lord Page 3
From the Pastor’s Desk
Today we celebrate the feast of the Bap sm of the Lord, which concludes the Christmas season. The most im-portant aspect of this celebra on is that God con nues to show his grace and love for us. For the last three weeks we have celebrated the wonder of Christmas when God comes to us as a helpless baby in the manger. He joins our human family to show us the face of his love. These visible signs were made present to the shepherds by the angel on Christmas Eve, to Mary, Joseph and all of Israel by Simeon and Anna on the Feast of the Holy Family, and to the Wise Men by the light of a special star on Epiphany.
Today we see the sign of God’s love manifest, not in the infant Jesus, but in the adult Jesus at his bap sm. It hap-pened in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was bap zed in the Jordan by John. On coming out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him. And a voice
came from the heavens, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased. ” Jesus, of course, did not need to be
bap zed. But the ac on of his choosing to be bap zed allows John to see the fulfillment of his mission as herald of the good news. The Word of God is now made manifest to all people. John the Bap st tells the people that Jesus will bap ze us with the Holy Spirit.
We see the invisible triune God made visible to us. We see the Holy Spirit descending, we see the Son of God, Je-sus, iden fied by the voice of the Father. This completes the mystery of Christmas. Listening to all these stories we can only stand in wonder and in awe of God’s plan for our salva on.
What happened to Jesus in the Jordan is what happens to us in our bap sm. God sends his Holy Spirit down upon
us and claims us as his children. In the celebra on of the sacrament, we hear God’s voice proclaim, “You are my beloved son, you are my beloved daughter. On you my favor rests.” The ini a ve is on God’s part. We need to rest in God’s love, to soak it up like a sponge, to really feel and believe that God really does have this love for us. This is our faith. Each of us needs to realize it on a personal level.
The message of our bap sm is the Good News of salva on that God expects us to share with those around us. Evangeliza on is the voca on of all the bap zed. St. Peter went forth in the Acts of the Apostles proclaiming that God had anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and that Jesus went about “doing good and healing all those who were oppressed.” It really does simplify the meaning of evangeliza on for us.
Evangeliza-on simply means to carry the message of Christ. To live out our bap smal grace we simply carry the message by doing as Jesus did, doing good and healing those who are oppressed.
Isaiah says this more poe cally, giving the mission prac cal applica on. The Messiah comes to bring jus ce to the na ons, as the light of God, to open the eyes of the blind, to set free the prisoners and those who live in darkness. By doing good to others for the sake of the gospel we open their eyes to the love of God, we set them free from whatever prevents them from experiencing the presence of God in their lives.
The problem for most of us derives from the fact that we really do not believe that in bap sm we are given the Holy Spirit. Not simply his gi s or his power, but God’s own nature. Consequently, when things are difficult (or simply numbingly rou ne), we forget that the Holy Spirit has transformed us into the image of Christ. We o en limit ourselves and those around us, and are not conscious of the grace and power of the Spirit that would allow us to transcend our human weaknesses. Christmas is a reminder that the power of God resides in a powerless baby. That grace and power are always available to us.
Tomorrow we enter Ordinary Time, un l Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on February 17th. Let us celebrate the
joy of Christmas as we seek to manifest our bap smal grace in the daily rou nes of our lives. Have a great week.
Sincerely, Fr. Neil
