LISA VIII Events: PAM Award Ceremony
The PAM Division Award is given for a “significant contribution to the literature of physics, mathematics or astronomy or to honor work that demonstrably improves the exchange of information in physics, mathematics or astronomy. The contribution should also significantly benefit libraries or enhance the ability of librarians to provide service.” In 2014, the PAM Division Award was presented in honor of the Library and Information Services in Astronomy (LISA) Conference series. From the justification
• LISA conferences are notable for the close cooperation between astronomers and librarians;
sci-entists have always been actively involved as organizers and participants; the LISA meetings have proved an excellent venue for librarians, astronomers and software/data specialists to network and explore trends.
• The published proceedings of the LISA conferences provide a historical overview of the
develop-ment of electronic research and evolution and sharing of best practices in astronomy libraries
• Another outstanding aspect of the LISA conferences has been the Friends of LISA Committee
(FOL). It was established before LISA II to assist astronomy librarians in resource-poor countries to attend the conference. FOL solicits funding from publishers, astronomical institutions, and in-dividual librarians and astronomers. Grants have been awarded to between 18-29 inin-dividuals per meeting.
At LISA VII in Naples, Antonella Gasperini and Uta Grothkopf accepted the award on behalf of all organisers, planners, hosts, committee members, speakers, and attendees of LISA conferences. It was decided to make this award a “travelling” award that should be handed over to the current organisers at each new LISA conference. It was assumed that this would be a great way to remember that the PAM Division Award was given to LISA, and would provide an additional incentive to keep the LISA conference up and running. The Award is being passed from one LISA host to another, symbolizing the continued significance of the LISA conferences and the impact it has on astronomy and information services. Long live LISA!
