Morehead State University
Quality is the byword of Morehead State University as the insitution is ín its seventh decade of service. Founded in 1922 as a teachers college, MSU became a university ín 1966.
Nestled in the foothills of the Daniel Boone National Forest, Morehead State provides a learning and living environment far over 6,000 students and 900 faculty and staff members. The university's 500-acre campus features a 50-structure skyline dominated by the two tallest occupied structures in Eastern Kentucky, 19-story Cartmell Hall and 16-story Mignon Tower.
The university's three academic colleges offer many programs of study from an associate degree to a joint doctoral program. Applied Sciences and Technology, Arts and Sciences, and Professional Studies comprise the academic colleges.
MSU operates under a 10-member Board of Regents. Eight citizens are appointed by the governor of Kentucky and two seats are held by elected faculty and student represenatives with full voting rights. The administrative structure consists of three divisions-Academic Affairs, Student Development, and Administrative and Fiscal Affairs. Dr. C. Nelson Grote became MSU's eleventh president on July 1, 1987 after a nationwide search.
Morehead State sponsors a full program of intercollegiate sports far men and women as charter members of the Ohio Valley Conference and National Collegiate Athletic Association. Athletic facilities include a 10,000-seat football stadium with omniturf and an eight-lane oval track, a 6,500-seat basketball arena, a 1,200-seat baseball park, 14 all-weather tennis courts, a nine-hole golf course, an olympic size indoor swimming and diving facility and a lighted soccer tieid.
Ohio Valley Conference
The idea of farming the Ohio Valley Conference was originated in 1941, but could not be implemented until after World War II. ln 1948, five schools- Morehead State, Murray State Western Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky and Loui sville-withdrew from the Kentucky lntercollegiate Athletic Conference and were joined by Evansville ín farming the original membership of the OVC. They were joined shortly thereafter by Tennessee Tech and Marshall.
The membership has changed somewhat over the years. Middle Tennessee joined the league in 1952, East Tennessee in 1957 and Austin Peay in 1962. The trio of schools replaced Louisville, which became an independent in 1949, and Marshall and Evansville, which departed in 1952.
East Tennessee withdrew in 1978 making room far Akron and Youngstown State. Western Kentucky left the league in 1982. Akron also departed the OVC in 1986 with YSU leaving after the 1987 athletic season.
The OVC's newest member is Tennessee State University which is located in Nashville, Tenn.
·
ln'
1955, the NCAA formally recognized the OVC as a major basketball conference, awarding the league champion an automatic bid to the NCAA post-season t9urnament. At that time, the OVC was only the second six-team conference to obtain major status from the NCAA.Far many years the OVC has been represented in the nation's top holiday and post-season basketball tournaments. The league has also won recognition tor its football program placing represenatives ín a number of post-season bowl games. The OVC has achieved national recognition in NCAA Division 1-AA football with a national championship and two runner-up positions during its existence.
OVC champions have also been prominent on the national scene in baseball, rifelry, tennis, track, golf and cross country.
James Delaney, farmer NCAA investigator and graduate of North Carolina, operates as commissioner of the OVC. He is the OVC's fourth commissioner, following Art Guepe (1963-75), Paul Dietzel (1975-76) and Bob Vanatta ( 1976-79).

Outlook
Although Morehead State University coach Jim
McClellan anticipated last year as being a season of
rebuilding, the Lady Eagle volleyball team finished the
1986 season with a 28-14 record overall and second in
the Ohio Valley Conference.
McClellan would be thankful for a case of de-ja vu. McClellan's biggest problem early in the season will be replacing Kady Berger and Patty Gindling. Both Berger, MSU's setter, and Gindling, a middle blocker, were AII
-OVC performers during their final two seasons at MSU.
McClellan will be looking to returning starters, senior
Anne Bradley and sophomores Melissa Blanford and
Melissa Papai, to provide leadership.
Bradley, a 5-9 senior from Cincinnati, will be counted on tor her experience as an outside hitter. Bradley has good all-around skills and plays with excellent court sense. "Anne Bradley is going to provide the consistency that the team needs," said McClellan.
Blanford, a 5-3 sophomore from Louisville, Ky., will help to fill the void created at the setter position by the loss of Berger. She is a knowledgeable player with excellent serving ability.
"Missy Blanford had an excellent spring season," McClellan said. "Her height is her only detriment, though she makes up tor it with her enthusiasm."
Papai, a 5-1 O sophomore from LaPorte, Ind., saw a large amount of playing time as an outside hitter during her freshman year.
"Melissa Papai is an awesome hitter from the left -handed side. She will provide a lot of the offense this
year," McClellan said.
MSU has four returnees that will add experience and
depth to the Lady Eagle line-up.
Deborah Bryant (5-10, So., Oxford, Mich.) has probably improved more than any other player during 1986. Lisa Laird (6-0, Sr., Columbia, S.C.) will team up with Bryant to play the middle on defense.
Diana Neises (5-9, Jr., Bellevue, Ky.) will be a stability factor tor the team as a middle hitter. Jane Witten ( 5-11, Jr., Floyd Knobs, Ind.) has improved her overall skills
and may become a team leader.
McClellan also has four rookies who could see action this year.
"My cautious optimism tor the 1987 season is based on the fact that our incoming freshmen are not the best
we've ever had, but they are certainly the most
experienced of any we've had as far as playing time in high school," McClellan said.
Barbara Case (5-9, Fr., Dayton, Ky.) will see playing time as a middle hitter and blocker. Patrícia Fulk (6-1, Fr., Antwerp, Ohio) will be valuable because of her height and blocking ability.
Dayle Hamontree (5-8, Fr., Rolling Meadows, Ill.) is probably the most experienced freshman volleyball player to enroll at MSU and should contribute immediately. Algnette McCoy (5-10, Fr., North Vernon, Ind.) is an outstanding player who will add depth to the squad.
"We've got the nucleus of a good team," McClellan said. "I just don't know how long it's going to take tor things to click together."

Volleyball Terminology
PASSING
Pass: The reception
ot
the serve or first contactot
the ball. lt is an attempt to control the movementot
the ball to another player. A passot
a hard spiked ball is called a dig.SETTING
Set: A pass thai places the ball in position
tor
a player to spike.One-Set: An extremely low vertical set delivered trom 1 to 2 teet
above the net. The spiker contacts the ball while the set is rising.
Two-Set: This set usually travels 3-4 feet above the net. lt does not require the same split second timing as the one-set and can be mastered by any good spiker.
Three-Set: This play-set is delivered low and tasi to the middle spiker about 1 0 teet from the lett sideline. 11 was designed to beat a slow middle blocker.
Four-Set: This set is placed about a foot trom the sideline, at a height ot 1 or 2 feet above the net. This play is very difficult tor the middle blocker to cover when the ball travels a distance
ot
15-20 feet from the setter to the spiker.
Flve-Set: A back lob to the setter on the right sideline is called a five-set. lt is low enough to create a one-on-one situation for the off-hand spiker.
Jump Set: The player setting the ball jumps to confuse the block
or to place himself in a better posilion to save a long pass that will drop over or hit the net.
ATTACKING
Attacklng: Hitting the ball into the opponent's court.
Dlnk: Usually a one hand hit in which the tips of the fingers are used to hit the ball to an area of the opponent's court.
Llne Splke: A spike directed down the side line closest to the spiker.
Off-Speed Shot: A ball thai rapidly loses momentum due to a reduced speed of the striking arm just prior to contact. The off-speed shot is most effective when used infrequently and directed towards a definite weakness in the defense. The ball can be contacted by the hand or fingers tor this shot.
Splke: A ball hit forcibly with one hand. Back court players cannot spike the ball unless they take off from behind the ten-foot spike line.
BLOCKING
Block: A play by one or more players who attempt to intercept the ball over or near the net. Blocking is permitted by any or all of the players in the front line.
Turnlng the Balf ln: A technique used by the end blocker to prevent the spike from hitting his hands and going out of bounds. He reaches over the net with his outside hand between the boundary line and the ball.
DIGGING
Dig: A pass of a spiked ball while standing, diving, rolling or jumping. Dlve:An attempt to recover a ball by going to a prone position on the court.
One-Arm Dig: This technique is used when the balÍ cannot be
contacted using the forearm pass. The ball can be effectively contacted anywhere from the knuckles
ot
the closed fist to the elbow joint.Roll: A lateral movement thai allows the player to go to the floor without injury and return him quickly to his feet. ldeally, the ball
is contacted just before the thigh and buttocks hit the floor.
Free Ball: When the defense sees Ihat the offense will hit the ball
over the net with an upward flight or a weak spike, it should call
"Free!" and assume a norma! serve reception pattern.
MISCELLANEOUS
Two-Hltter Attack: The offense used when one of the front court
players is a setter.
Antenna: A pole extended vertically from the boltom of the net to a height of 2 1 /2 to 3 1 /2 feet above the net at the sideline. Flve-One Offense: This offense uses five hitters and one setter.
Consequently 50 percent
ot
the rotations it runs with two hitters at the net. One player sets all the good passes.Netting: Touching the net while the ball is in play. This act terminates the play when seen by the referee or umpire. ln doubles, the player calls his own nets.
Out of Bounds: The ball is out
ot
bounds when it touches any surface or object or ground outside the markers on the sides otthe net, or touches a net antenna or passes over the net not entirely within the net antennas.
Scorlng: A team can only score points when they are serving.
Seam: The area directly between two receivers or diggers.
Slde Out: When the serving team tails to score a point the ball is given to its opponents and exchange
ot
service is called side-out.Slx-Two Offense: This is an offense thai uses three hitters at the net and a back row setter. Four players are spikers and two are setter-spikers.
Thrown Ball: the ball must be clearly hit. When, in the opinion
ot the proper official, the ball visibly comes to rest at contact, the player shall have committed a toul.
Transltlon: Changing from offense to defense or vice versa.
ST ATISTICAL INTERPRET ATIONS
KIII: A spike or dink attempt thai goes out ot bounds (see out ot bounds definition under miscellaneous), does not clear the net resulling in a point or side-out for the opposition, causes the hitter to come in contact with the net or cross the center line or is thrown (see thrown definition under miscellaneous).
Total Attack: The total number
ot
spikes or dinks attempted by a player. Derived as the sums ot kills, errors and zeroes.Hlttlng Percentage: A success rate tor hitting. Derived by
subtracting hitting errors from kills and dividing by the total attack.
A hitting percentage of .250 or better is good-.300 or better is excellent.
Servlce Ace: A serve thai directly results in a point. 11 does not necessarily have to hit the floor untouched.
Servlce Error: A service attempt Ihat goes out of bounds or touches
the net. Also if the server is called tor a foot fault.
Defenslve Save: Credited when an outstanding play is made to
pass an opponent's spike or dink. Distinguished from a dig as the play must allow the defensive player's team to go on offense. The ball must not be passed back over the net and the play must be of an extraordinary nature.
Bali Handllng Error: Results from a double hit, a lifted ball (when not as the result of a serve), ball set over the net, etc.
Block Solo: Any block (see blocking section) by a single player thai results directly in a point or side-out.
Blocklng Asslst: Any block by two or three players thai results in a point or side-out. Ali players need not touch the ball. lf two players go up together and the ball is blocked tor a point ot side-out, a block assisi is credited to both.
Blocklng Error: Assigned when a player comes in contact with
the net or crosses the center line when in the act of blocking.
11 is not merely because a blocking attempt is unsuccessful, ie.
ball going out of bounds or to the detender's floor off the block.
Recelvlng Error: Errors made as a result of the opponent's service attempt. Can include lifted ball, tailure to make a pass allowing receiver's team to go on offense, passing ball over the net resulting in a kill for the opposilion or allowing a serve to hit the floor in the receiver's coverage area.
