IN-PERSON AND VIRTUAL SUMMER SCHOOL

The BHEF Middle School Bootcamp is excited to offer a mixture of in-person and virtual Summer

Programs! All sports camps and most Bootcamps will be in-person. Please take note in the course

description of the method of instruction.

As schools are resuming in-person instruction, BHEF will continue to assess the safety protocols in

accordance with local health agencies for in-person programs. Should our program change to virtual

instruction, you will be notified at that time and the Summer Academy will be conducted online using

Home Learning platforms such as Google Classroom or Zoom. As always, the safety of our students

and staff is our top priority.

Refund Policy

All requests for refunds must be in strict compliance with the deadlines below and must be made in writing by emailing the Summer Academy at [email protected]. There are no exceptions to this policy.

If BHEF Summer Academy cancels a class, you will receive a full refund. If you wish to withdraw from a class, our Refund Policy is as follows:

Requests received by May 28, 2021 will be honored for a partial refund of 50%, less a $100.00 processing fee.

No refund requests will be considered after May 28, 2021. No exceptions to this policy.

Program Information

The Middle School Bootcamps and Sports Academy are for incoming students, grades 6-8, as of Fall 2021. In-Person Middle School Bootcamps are held at Beverly Hills High School, 241 South Moreno Drive, Beverly Hills, CA 90212.

Virtual Middle School Bootcamps will be held via ZOOM and/or Google Classroom. Students may attend select virtual classes at BHHS in a supervised classroom (please review course description for this option). The Middle School Bootcamps are open to ALL residents, inside and outside of the Beverly Hills Unified School District.

The Middle School Sports Academy is only open to current or incoming BHUSD students.

The Middle School Sports Academy will take place at Beverly Hills High School, 241 South Moreno Drive, Beverly Hills, CA 90212.

The Cheerleading Middle School Sports Academy will take place Beverly Vista Middle School, 200 S. Elm Drive, Beverly Hills, CA 90212.

All Sports Academy registrants taking place at BHHS will meet at the Swim Gym on the first day and will be escorted to the appropriate facility by the coach.

We do not prorate Middle School Programs.

I understand that by returning to in-person school, my child will be required to follow all reopening procedures/protocols including wearing a mask, 6 foot distancing, washing hands often, daily health screenings, and following 10-day quarantine requirements due to travel.

Class Cancellations

The courses are dependent upon enrollment numbers. Should a course not meet the minimum number of enrollees, the course may be cancelled. In the event a course is canceled by the BHEF Summer Academy, your tuition fees will be refunded in full. If you have any questions, please email the Summer Academy at

Middle School Program

TWO-WEEK BOOTCAMP

C O U R S E D E S C R I P T I O N S

Courses are open to incoming 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students.

Math Review bootcamps are for current 6-8 graders, as of Fall 2020. Bootcamp courses are not for academic credit.

(All class offerings are subject to policies and conditions.)

A Taste of Art

Grades: 6-8

This bootcamp provides students with a variety of introductory art experiences. Students will experiment with a variety of materials, techniques, and processes to create two and three dimensional works of art. All of these experiences focus on developing problem solving and other higher level thinking skills as well as fostering self-expression. Students will also examine a variety of works of art and artists to help them recognize and better understand the artistic cultural achievements of societies. Students will focus on the application of the Elements of Art and Principles of Design in conjunction with artistic behaviors to heighten thought and expression in their artwork. Knowledge gained from studying other artists and cultures will be applied in solving problems in art.

This is an IN-PERSON class and will take place at Beverly Hills High School.

Audio Production

Grades: 6-8

Are you a music lover? Ever wanted to make your own original music? Interested in meeting and working with music industry professionals? Audio Production is your opportunity to work in a professional music studio and make your own professional quality music using the latest software, hardware and technology. Any level learner, from beginner to advanced, is accepted. Take your ideas from concept to creation to Spotify in this extraordinary class.

This is an IN-PERSON class and will take place at Beverly Hills High School.

Google Suite (i.e. Docs, Drive, Slides, etc.), which are commonly used at BVMS and other middle schools. In addition, students will hone their organizational, time management, and note-taking skills; learn how to keep an agenda; and learn vital communication skills such as the fundamental conventions of writing, how to talk to teachers, how to self-advocate, and how to structure effective presentations.

This is an IN-PERSON class and will take place at Beverly Hills High School.

Coding

Grades: 6-8

This course is an introduction to the fundamentals of computer programming, which is the foundation of Computer Science. Students design, write, and debug computer programs. No knowledge of programming is assumed. All students will learn to create their own Google Logo, Sound and Music Design, and Game Design.

This is a VIRTUAL class with a live instructor via ZOOM and/or Google Classroom. Students may attend this virtual class at BHHS in a supervised classroom.

English Language Arts Review

Grades: 6-8

This course offers students a refresher of English Language Arts standards providing students with a review of concepts integral to English, such as the different genres of writing, how to communicate effectively, sentence structure, and practical experience with the art of the essay.

This is an IN-PERSON class and will take place at Beverly Hills High School.

Math Review

Grades: 6-8*

This bootcamp offers students with grade-specific reviews of Common Core State Standards for middle school math. Specifically designed for students who want or need support before advancing to the next grade year. *Math Review bootcamps are for current 6-8 graders, as of Fall 2020. When registering, please sign up your child for the class that corresponds to their current grade.

This is an IN-PERSON class and will take place at Beverly Hills High School.

Photography

Grades: 6-8

This bootcamp introduces students to the basic procedures involved in Digital Photography and Post-Processing digital images in Adobe Lightroom. Photos can be shot on digital cameras or iPhones. The history of photography will also be covered in the course. Students will maintain a digital portfolio of original artworks and a photo journal for reflective writing and critique.

This is a VIRTUAL class with a live instructor via ZOOM and/or Google Classroom.

Podcast Production Camp

Grades: 6-8

Learn the ins-and-outs of creating, writing, and audio recording in a podcast all from start to finish! Join fellow students on a creative journey to put together a fully-produced podcast episode. Participants will have the opportunity to learn how to record, edit, and mix a podcast they create. These podcasts will incorporate

predetermined topics, or participants can bring their own topics to discuss. Sound effects, background music, and other creative techniques will be explored.

This is a VIRTUAL class with a live instructor via ZOOM and/or Google Classroom. Students may attend this virtual class at BHHS in a supervised classroom.

• Cross Country will use facilities at BHHS, Roxbury Park, and/or Cheviot Hills Park.
