Francis Scott Key Post No. 11

Official Bulletin Vol. XXXVIII No.12

JUNE — 2021

COMMANDER’S ROLL CALL

Masks not required if you have been vaccinated

Greetings to all members of the American Legion Post 11. I would like for everyone to join me in wishing the Army a Happy 245th Birthday. And the Army goes rolling along. June 14th, the Army's birthday, is also Flag Day. God bless America and the United States.

I would like to take this opportunity to highlight June 20, 2021 officially as the beginning of 101 days of summer. Whenever we think of summer we think of warmer weather and all the outdoor fun to go along with the season. As if battling the restrictions of the pandemic has not been enough, it is especially important to be ever mindful and attentive to staying safe when engaging in summer fun activities such as water sports, more motorcycles on the road and watching out for children at play. I ask that we all continue to do our part in keeping everyone safe.

Last month there was an increase in the amount of activities in the Post. In addition to the nor-mal Tuesday Ace of Spades drawing and daily menu specials, there has been first Sunday and Wednesday bingo. Post Everlasting Ceremonies for 2020 and 2021 and the Memorial Day cere-mony are now complete. We had The Last Man Standing celebration, Bereavements, and a small retirement celebration and I am happy to report that they all went well. I would like to give a big thank you to the different committees, staff, and volunteers for their role in the success of the various events. Do not forget to buy Lucky 3 tickets for the month of June at the bar, the of-fice or from the Vice Commanders for $10.

Upcoming events at the American Legion Post 11 include officer elections in June. Installation of new officers will be held July 6th. The Department Convention and Legion college will be held July 13 – 16 in Ocean City. To coincide with the 102nd birthdate of the Post on July 19th, we are planning a Grand Reopening as restrictions continue to be lifted. A Gun Raffle will be held in September and there will be more information to come on those events.

Even with restrictions being lifted, it is not "All Clear" when it comes to the pandemic, so please continue to social distance, wearing your mask if unvaccinated and washing your hands regular-ly. We will get through this pandemic when we all work together. The first five members to tell me what birthday this is for the Army, I will buy them an adult or regular beverage of their choice. "One Band, One Sound."

S.A.L. News by: Jeffrey Seiler, Commander

Dues, What can I say? If you have not paid your dues, they are now overdue. We have approxi-mately 70 members that have not paid their dues yet. Wayne Fox is doing a tremendous job col-lecting dues and getting our members their cards. The Sons of The American Legion membership cal-endar year is from July 1st, 2020 to June 30th, 2021. The dues are $35.00 per member and $15.00 for junior members. If you have NOT PAID your dues this is a reminder that your dues are now PAST DUE. Please stop by the post and PAY YOUR MEMBERSHIP DUES. Thank you. Wow, what a year we are having. According to Governor Hogan we can almost be back to normal. But please keep in mind that there is still a danger. Please follow the post rules when at our Post Home.

We hope everyone enjoyed Memorial Day and their long weekend. On May 15th, many people of the American Le-gion family cleaned and wrapped the flags and then on May 29th placed flags on the graves of our veterans. We can Never forget our veterans and what they have done for our country. Memorial Day commemorates the men and wom-en who died while in the military service of their county, particularly those who died in battle. The purpose of Memo-rial Day is to memoMemo-rialize the veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. We spend time remembering those who lost their lives and could not come home, reflecting on their service and why we have the luxury and free-dom that we enjoy today.

We hope that those who attended the “Steak Night” enjoyed their steaks. The next steak night will be Monday June 28th

We would like to extend our thanks to our Incoming Commander Willie Jenkins for the wonderful Post Everlasting Services that were held on May 19 and May 20. Excellent programs for remembering our fallen American Legion fam-ily.

The Detachment of Maryland will be holding its 48th Annual Convention on June 18, 19 & 20. There is a lot of change this year as everything will be held at the Delta Hotels Marriott in Hunt Valley.

Some other important dates to remember in June; June 6th D-Day, June 14th Flag Day and Army’s Birthday, June 19th

Juneteenth, June 20th Father’s Day, June 25th Start of the Korean War in 1950.

The next meeting for the Sons of The American Legion will be held on Monday June 7th, 2021.

Please mark your calendars and plan on attending to learn about the Sons and maybe run for an office within the Sons of The American Legion and the upcoming events

Serving those who Served – Full Steam Ahead

I hope this Newsletter finds everyone healthy and well. Now that the Covid restrictions are starting to lift things are looking up.

I want to thank all who participated in the Honor Guard and Flag presentation on May 8th for one of our Legion members. A thank you to those who assisted Thurmont Post 168 with the Honor Guard on May 11th at Mt. Olivet.

Please mark your calendars for these upcoming events: June 3rd Parking pad dedication at 7:30 pm and election of new

Greetings Legion Family!

As we wind down the 2020/2021 Auxiliary year, our Unit extends our thanks to our members, and the entire Legion Family of FSK Post 11 for your support during this past, unique year. Our/Your Unit has continued to support our programs, addressing needs in different ways, be it financially, a little bit in person, and through technology. It has been challenging, but our members, and the Legion Fami-ly, have made things happen so successfully.

Our Unit Members have stepped up to the challenges of the year. Recognition needs to go out to so many of our members, I wish I could name you all, but there is only so much space and we wouldn’t want to miss anyone.

Thank you to our Legion Family for your support of our Cash Raffle. Once again, the raffle was a great suc-cess. See the Winners list included in this bulletin.

It is a pleasure to report our Unit has awarded three scholarships. Congratulations David Kneebone, Paul Hinch, Jr., and Madeysn Harrington. We are also sponsoring three young ladies for the 2021 Virtual Girls State Session, including our own, Honorary Department Junior President, Rylie Lach. We wish the best for each of you!

We are still seeking volunteers for our various programs and offices in planning for the new Auxiliary year. Please consider becoming an active member in your Unit. Our next meeting is June 15th at 7:00 p.m. There is no Unit meeting in July.

Wishing you all a happy and healthy summer!

Your Post’s History By Sheldon Shealer

(Extracts from Post Meeting Minutes)

100 Years Ago – June 1921

The regular meeting of Post 11 was called to order by Vice Commander Robert L. Crothers, June 14th, in the club room in the Y.M.C.A. building. The Ad Hoc committee to report the name of individuals involved in the supposed irregularities regarding the ticket sales for the Legion Show, submitted their report. The report gave extensive justification as to why they came to the conclusion of not revealing the names. It was felt that if “any of our members were guilty of wrong-doing, through error or intentionally, it is for us to be sorry and try to make things right and at the same time take such steps as may be necessary to pre-vent a recurrence.” After the report was accepted, the person referred to in the report did identify him-self and apologized for his part in the irregularity of the seat sale and said that his name was not men-tioned in the initial report because outsiders were guilty of appropriating tickets before the time set for sale and the original committee did not want to have them mixed up in Legion affairs.

The Decorations Committee reported that the decorations of the club room had been complete and that it was due to the efforts and good taste of Miss Apple that this work had been accomplished so well. Rev. Roderick, chair of Memorial Day Committee, reported that program had been carried out on May 30th be-ing held in conjunction with the Reynolds Post G.A.R. Later FSK Post 11 took charge of the program and dedicated a grove of 92 trees to our fallen comrades of Frederick County. Col. Thomas W. Miller, Alien Property Custodian, delivered the address. A motion was made and passed that as a Post, we protest against the disrespect shown to the flag in the Memorial Day Parade by spectators and that we request the general public to show such respect hereafter by removing their hats or other approved manner. Moved and carried that the Adjutant be instructed to write National HQ concerning Legion caps and to report at the next meeting.

50 Years Ago – June 1971

The regular meeting of Post 11 was called to order by 1st vice Commander Warren Erich June 8th with ap-proximately 35 members present. One member voted in, one rejected. Meeting suspended to have Cor-poration Meeting. Two new board members, Mr. Phillips and Mr. Karl Harner were selected as Board members. CDR Frank brought up air conditioners not working and asked building committee to check on it. CDR Frank reported that he had received a check for $ 100.00 from the Ladies Auxiliary. Motion to put the money towards building fund mortgage. Reported that Legion will play its opening ball game on Sat-urday at Brunswick. Moment of silence for departed comrades Casper Crum, Benny Groves, and past De-partment Commander, Clarence Harner.

20 Years Ago – June 2001

The regular meeting of Post 11 was called to order by Commander Wise June 12th at 8 pm. Membership at 2,029 exceeding goal and receiving 4 Star status. SAL had 330 and received 4 Star status. Camp West-Mar will have a full camp of 90 campers this year and needs more junior counselors. Moved and ap-proved to provide Camp West-Mar $ 200.00 towards new pool cover. Twelve new members and 4 trans-fers were approved. Membership paid for 5 members that need assistance. A thank you reception for all volunteers this Saturday and Joint Installation of Officers, June 10th. Results of election announced: Com-mander, Ron Govans; 1st VC, Ron Turley; 2nd VC, Mack McClanahan; Adjutant, Robert Smariga; Finance Officer, William Lach; Chaplain Robert Yoder; Historian, Wendy Clevenger; Sgt-At-Arms, Robert Turner. Executive Committee; Harold Blank, Dale Carter, Charles Clipp, Angela Koch, Timothy Lamson, David Winpigler, and Susan Maddox.

With only 1,692 sponsored wreaths last year and over 4,000 veterans buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery not every veteran was honored with a wreath on Wreaths Across America Day. Mt Olivet had to select specific areas of the cemetery to cover fully with the wreaths available. Post 11 is asking for your help to ensure that we reach our goal to place a wreath on every veteran’s grave at Mt Olivet Cemetery. Please sponsor one or more wreaths in honor of or in memory of an American hero. For each purchase of a $15 wreath, $5 will be returned to Post 11 for use in our many Legion programs including purchasing flags for placement on Memo-rial Day at Mt Olivet.

Purchasing wreaths is easy. Order online through this direct link to the WAA page:

https://www.wreathsacrossamerica.org/MD0490P

Click the red button that says ‘Sponsor Wreaths’.

Select the # of wreaths to sponsor AND the location you want them delivered to (Location ID MDMOCF). Click ‘Review My Sponsorships’. To complete the checkout process with a credit/debit card, Google Pay, or Paypal. Be sure to verify that your group ID and location ID are listed next to the items in your shopping cart

PRIOR to submitting your order. You can also mail a check made out to WAA and mail to WAA-Post11, 1450

Taney Ave, Frederick, MD 21702. Sponsorship forms will be available at the Legion Home.

Any questions contact Keith Clevenger @ 301-514-6641. Please leave message if no answer or email

The Veterans History Project at the Library of Congress

The mission of the VHP of the American Folklife Center is to collect, preserve, and make accessi-ble the personal accounts of American wartime veterans so that future generations may hear di-rectly from veterans and better understand the realities of war.” Collections may take the form of war veterans’ first-hand oral histories, memoirs, collections of original photographs and letters, diaries, and other historical documents from World War I through the present.

The Frederick County Veterans History Project (an activity under the auspices of the Federal Li-brary of Congress) has been active since 2002. We have recorded interviews with several hun-dred veterans here in the county, most notably focusing on survivors of World War II and Korea. These video recording are stored in the Maryland Room of the Burr Artz Public Library in down-town Frederick as well as being on file with the Library of Congress. We are very interested in continuing this historical activity to record individual histories from more recent service. If you are willing to be interviewed, or are simply interested in finding out more about the program, please contact Jim Hubbard at 240-578-4961 or on e-mail at [email protected]. Additionally, we are also very interested in recruiting additional interviewers and will be happy to offer training for that task.
