Doodles & Ramblings

with Father Louis Sung

Hello Everyone and happy 18th Sunday in ordinary time.

Today I will be speaking about the Olympics as they should be going on right now. I remember watching random sports during the Olympics.

But my favorite was always basketball. This is because it is my favorite sport and team USA always had a bunch of NBA stars on the team.

The most memorable USA Olympic basketball year for me was the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

That was the team called the “Redeem Team”

and it was also my favorite player’s, Kobe Bryant’s, first Olympics. Previous USA basketball showings had been disappointing and the last Olympics they had only won a

bronze medal. I remember waking up at 3am or 4am to watch the games and they were very exciting. The gold medal match was especially fun since it was 2 of the Lakers stars going against each other, Laker Pau Gasol was playing for Spain. I have fond memories of watching the TV in my living room in the dark with super low volume as to not wake up my family. This was my favorite Olympic event to watch. In next week’s bulletin I will go over some of the other sports I watch during the Olympics and some of my other memories of watching the Olympics.

A Message From Fr. Riz

My Dear Parishioners,

The following is the statement from the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments concerning the

“Change to the Concluding Doxology of Orations”. This was implemented on Ash Wednesday, last February 17, 2021.

What is changed? In the concluding doxology of orations in the Roman Missal and other liturgical books, the words “one God, for ever and ever” are replaced with “God, for ever and ever.” Therefore, the changes are as follows:

— If the prayer is directed to the Father: Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.

— If it is directed to the Father, but the Son is mentioned at the end: Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.

— If it is directed to the Son: Who live and reign with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.

Why is this changed? In May of 2020, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments wrote to the English-speaking Conferences of Bishops to point out that the current translation, “... in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever,” is incorrect. There is no “one” in the Latin, and Deus in the Latin text refers to Jesus Christ. Therefore, the correct translation, which is already reflected in the Missal in other languages (including the Misal Romano in Spanish) is simply: “...in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.”

Where the current translation emphasizes the oneness of the Trinity in living and reigning forever, the new translation emphasizes the divinity of Jesus Christ, who is God, living and reigning with the Father and the Holy Spirit forever.

I hope this is helpful information to those of you who may be wondering why the word “one” is omitted at the conclusion of the prayers at mass.

Peace, Fr. Riz

So they said to him, “What can we do to accomplish the works of God?” Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent.” John 6:28-29

What a great question someone asked Jesus in today’s Gospel. It’s a question we can still ask Jesus – what can we do to accomplish the works of God? Jesus says that we need to believe in the One God sent.

That’s it? The “work of God” is to simply believe in Jesus? What does that mean for you? If you sincerely believe in Jesus you must want to do all He asks us to do in life…there is the work. This week talk as a family or with friends about your belief in Jesus. What does it move you to do?

Random acts of kindness? Pray daily? Don’t forget to help the kids do the same – ask them what they believe about Jesus and what they want to do for Him.

The Transfiguration of the Lord August 6, 2021

The Transfiguration is the fourth of the Luminous Mysteries

of the Rosary.

Jesus is transfigured (changed in form and appearance) and appears in dazzling white clothes. Elijah, the great prophet, and Moses, through whom the Israelites were given the law, appear with Jesus. A cloud appears, overshadowing them, and a voice states, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.” Jesus charges the three to not share with anyone what they had seen “except when the Son of Man had risen from the dead.” They keep their experience to themselves, pondering what Jesus meant by rising from the dead.

How are we to understand the Transfiguration? The story of the Transfiguration is also proclaimed on the second Sunday of Lent—a key part of Jesus’ journey towards the Cross. The Catechism of the Catholic Church draws parallels between Jesus’ Baptism and the Transfiguration.

Jesus is baptized at the start of his public ministry. His baptism proclaims the mystery of our first regeneration—

we die and rise again with Christ. The “Transfiguration ‘is the sacrament of the second regeneration’: our own Resurrection (St. Thomas Aquinas, STh III, 45, 4, ad 2).

From now on we share in the Lord’s Resurrection through the Spirit who acts in the sacraments of the Body of Christ.

The Transfiguration gives us a foretaste of Christ’s glorious coming, when he ‘will change our lowly body to be like his glorious body (Phil 3:21)’” (Catechism of the Catholic

Church, no. 556). During the Prayer after Communion, we pray that God might “transform us into the likeness of your [his] Son, / whose radiant splendor you willed to make manifest / in his glorious Transfiguration.” The Collect, or opening prayer, tells us that the mystery of the Transfiguration “prefigures our full adoption to sonship.”

The Transfiguration, initially revealed to Peter, James, and John, reveals to all of us a taste of what is yet to come.

Find Out What Your Children Are Watching

With movie theaters reopening across the country, now is a great time to add another website to your collection of parenting resources: Catholic News Services’ staff reviews movies from a uniquely Catholic perspective, noting things like nudity, swearing, and other problematic themes that have become mainstream in ratings like PG and PG-13. Parents can vet movies their children are planning to see or may encounter at friends’ houses. Talk to your children about what they should do if a friend wants to see a questionable movie, and why you want them to avoid particular films. PICK OF THE WEEK:

Good relationships are a vital part of human well-being. In fact, studies show that those with the healthiest relationships live the longest! But where can we see these friendships lived out? Look no further than the life of famed author J.R.R. Tolkien. The relationships he exhibited are a wonderful example for all of us to follow, especially with those we may disagree with. As Tolkien described marriage, it’s all about being “companions in shipwreck."

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP

RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS

Practicing Graciousness in the Desert Looking back over my journey of parenthood, I know there were days when I traveled the extra mile for my children. I made their toast the way they like it, let them play in the park an extra ten minutes, or let them go to the movies with their friends and I finished up the chores on my own. And then, it happened: the attitude. The request for the smallest thing from one of them is met with disdain or bewilderment.

Sometimes you can be made breathless with the ingratitude of another person who takes so much and with so little shame, only to scoff at the idea that they, too, give even the smallest amount.

But if we’re being honest with ourselves, we will admit that we do the exact same thing to God.

Haven’t we all been the Israelites in the desert at one point or another? God has parted our Red Sea in some way. He’s led us out of some great trial, given us some great blessings. But then we run into a little resistance somewhere along the way and we throw up our hands. How could you do this to us, Lord? How could you ask this of us? No, I can’t go any further.

No, I won’t do any more.

Persisting in the blindness to the many ways God continues to protect us is nothing short of a temper tantrum. It robs our Everyday Stewardship of its graciousness, of our ability to accept with joy the trials of life because we are also constantly aware of its blessings.

Descubra Lo Que Ven Sus Hijos
