This exercise is designed to help you clarify your core values. It is a
challenging but vital exercise, and it will be more meaningful if you
do it silently and on your own.
METHOD 1
To identify your core values, simply take some time out, and at the top of a blank sheet of
paper write down the question… “What is important to me in life?”
Then answer that question with whatever comes to mind, but keep going until you get at
least five key words that represent your being. If you come to a blank, that’s ok, just keep
going until you have five key values identified. It’s natural for somebody to have a mental
block if they have not done this exercise before. This is a really good way to determine
your values. However if you are having difficulty in doing this exercise, then try Method 2
below.
METHOD 2
Now that you have highlighted all the values that resonate with you initially, go through a process of elimination. Out of all the values you have highlighted, if you had to remove one from the list, which one would it be? Once you have identified it, scratch it off your list. Continue this process and keep eliminating the ones that are least important to you until you are left with between three to five values. The values that are left on your list are the ones that are of highest importance to you. It’s these values by which you subconsciously live your life and when they are not being implemented and respected, you are not functioning at your greatest capacity. Engage these values in everything you do, and success and happiness will follow.
This exercise forms part of the book “EVOLVE, Look Within Yourself For Business Success” written by Paul Davis. In this book the importance of values is discussed and explained in more detail.
