Better data compression and query time

The clustered column store index (CCI) in SQL Server 2014 has been designed for use with data warehouses to deliver better data compression and sub-second query response time, enabling interactive analytics on the data. There is no need to pre-aggregate the data for the anticipated queries or reports.

• Leverage CCI optimized for query performance, offering 10 times better query response time and 7 times higher compression ratio

• Support two types of concurrent insertions of new data while query workloads are running with updateable CCI, reducing data latency from the time data is born to when it is available for querying

Flash adapters

The X6 server features Intel Xeon processors. With more cores and more

memory, the X6 family is designed to be fast from the ground up. Every subsystem is tuned to maximize performance:

• Harness greatly increased processing power, thanks to the latest Intel Xeon E7-8890 v3 processors

• Get three times the memory capacity of previous-generation processors, with 96 DIMM sockets in the x3850 X6 and 192 DIMM sockets in the x3950 X6—and with support for 64 GB LRDIMMs, get up to 6 TB of memory in the x3850 X6 or 12 TB in the x3950 X6

DWFT for SQL Server 2014 with System x3850 X6 (95TB) features 5,200 GB Enterprise io3 Adapter flash storage designed to improve productivity through data consolidation, availability, performance and scalability. These simplify DWFT storage configuration and maintenance versus the use of a SAN, which has more parts to maintain and manage.

Configuration tested and certified

As shown in Figure 2, System x3850 X6 server is configured with: • Four Intel Xeon processor E7-8890 v3 2.5 GHz 18-core • Ninety-six 16 GB DDR4 DIMMs for a total 1,536 GB memory • Two 300 GB SAS HDDs for OS
