Year 2 Home learning Plan: Week beginning 1/3/21

Learning activities are listed by day, with each day consisting of English, Maths and one other subject.

In addition to these daily learning activities, your child should continue to practice their reading, phonics/spelling and times tables. Year group spelling lists are available on the school’s website. If you would like additional work, the Year group’s homework and Millhouse Milestones can also be found on the website.

Free levelled reading books can be found on the Oxford Owl website: https://home.oxfordowl.co.uk/reading/

English Maths Other

Mon Watch the video on google classroom to practice the ‘c l’ handwriting join before starting the English lesson today.

Re-read or watch the story Mrs Armitage on wheels then answer these questions

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fp5LR8R thHA

1. What is Mrs Armitage’s dog called? 2. Why did Mrs Armitage decide that she needed a horn?

3. What three sounds did the horn make? 4. Does Mrs Armitage like to be clean or filthy? How do you know this?

5. List 3 items from her toolbox.

6. How do we know that Breakspear was feeling tired?

7. What does the word ‘faithful’ mean? 8. What does ‘extra oomph’ mean?

9. Why do you think the bike crashed at the end of the story?

10. What repeating phrases are there in the story? (There are 2)

This week we are continuing with time. What did we learn last week?

This week we are going to look at ‘quarter to’ and ‘quarter past’. Use the PowerPoint and/or video to help you and then have a go at these

questions:

Geography

Today we are going to be looking at maps to see if we can find where we live. We are also going to look at a map of our local area to see if we can find places we know or may have seen. Use the enlarged maps on google classroom to discuss the questions.

Where in the world are we? UK What country do we live in? England

What region of the UK are we in? East of England What county? Essex

(2)

Looking at maps of Laindon, find: your school, your home, a park, a shop and an office/factory. Can you find the Ford factory on the map?

You could go on a walk and add things that you see to the map of our local area.

Tues This week we are going to plan our own version of Mrs Armitage on wheels. In the story, lots of things go wrong and she fixes them by adding things to her bike. Can you think of a problem she might find with her bike? What item could she add to her bike to fix that problem? For example, she might get cold and add a hot water bottle! You will use this idea as part of your story. Fill out the story map below to help you.

Carrying on from yesterday, we are going to be drawing the time today. We are going to need to remember our keywords and what they mean. Use the PowerPoint and/or video to help you and then have a go at reading these times and

drawing them on the clocks.

Science:

We are going to continue with our materials lessons with the Oak Academy, to learn that the same material can be used to make different objects:

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lesso ns/what-are-objects-made-from-61gp8d

(3)

Pick 3 objects in your home. What are they? What material are they made from? They might be made from more than one type of material!

Wed Today you are going to write your story. Make sure you use your ideas from the plan but don’t just copy. Each part of the story should have at least 3 sentences in but you can write more if you want to! Include conjunctions, adjectives and adverbs to make your writing really interesting!

Now we know what o’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to mean, we are going to look at 5minute increments. This just means we’ll be using our 5x tables to help us today. Use the PowerPoint and/or video to help you and then practice telling and writing the time. Look carefully at what side the minute hand (Long hand) is on to decide whether it is past or to.

DT: We’d like you to learn the different parts of a car this week. The best way to do this, would be to look at a real car or a toy car to learn about the different parts.

Alternatively, you could watch this video (Two of the words they use are the American version: we call the ‘hood’ a bonnet and a ‘muffler’ a silencer – the silencer is part of the exhaust.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-UcVwzrAqo

(4)

Draw a picture of a car and label these parts: bonnet, boot, wheel, tyre, headlight, windscreen and exhaust. If you prefer, there is a cut and stick labelling activity in the extra resources on the Google Classroom.

Using the 100 square below, find and highlight all of the numbers in the times tables below. Use a different colour for each set:

2x tables 5x tables 10x tables

Challenge: find and highlight all of the numbers in the 3x and 4x tables.

PE and well-being:

Today we’d like you to try some yoga. Yoga is a great way to exercise and to help us relax. This Cosmic Yoga episode will even teach you more about the material metal, as Marv the Metal Detective goes on a yoga style hunt for different types of metals!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTQcOL QeEbU

(6)

Practice writing the ir sound. See example below –

1. Now, can you write the following words…

sir, girl, bird, twirl, first, third, squirt, birthday 2. Can you practise writing the following

sentence using your sounds to help you? Don’t forget full stops, capital letters and finger spaces…

The girl likes to twirl and whirl her skirt. The girl and boy enjoy their birthday.

Extension: Can you make up your own sentence or sentences using any of the above words?

(7)

Spelling practice: There are videos for each spelling session on the Google classroom, explaining any new spelling rules and giving suggestions for how to practise and learn your spellings. These spelling sessions should only last around 15 – 20 minutes.

Monday • Today, we will go over the spelling rules we learnt last week for adding ing to a verb: • Sometimes you just add ing to the end, like in walk > walking

• If the word ends with a consonant and then an e, you drop the e, before you add ing like in close > closing • If the word ends in ee, you just add ing like in agree > agreeing

• If the word ends with an ie, you have to change the ie to a y and then add ing, like in tie > tying • If the word ends with a y, you just add ing, like in tidy > tidying

If the word ends with a short vowel and then a consonant, you have to double the consonant and then add ing, like in shop >

shopping

What a lot of spelling rules to remember! See if you can use these rules to add ing to the following words: see > lie > stay > jump > bake > run >

Challenge: can you say or write the words in sentences?

Tuesday Let’s think about everything we have learned about changing verbs to the past or present tense. Use the verb charade cards to play a game of verb charades! (The cards are attached to the bottom of this plan as well as in the additional daily resources on the classroom.) Pick a card and act out the verb. When the word is guessed you have to say the verb in the present tense and in the past tense too. For example, driving > drove or sawing > sawed

Wednesday This activity is similar to yesterday, but today you are going to write your answers down.

Look at the picture. (There is an enlarged copy at the bottom of this plan as well as in the additional daily resources on the classroom.) How many different verbs can you see? Write down the verb, then the present tense and finally the past tense. For example: stand > standing > stood, splash > splashing > splashed.

(8)

Friday Can you answer these questions, using all you have learnt about changing verbs to the past and present tense? 1. Tick to show whether each sentence is in the past of present tense.

Sentence Past

tense

Present tense Dan was swimming.

He swam very fast.

I am swimming in the pool.

2. Tick the correct sentence • Sam saw a ball in the park and kick it. • Sam saw a ball in the park and kicked it. • Sam sees a ball in the park and kick it. • Sam sees a ball in the park and kicking it. 3.

Times Table practise:

We are working on our x2, x5 and x10 times tables.

You can login to Times table Rockstars here to practise these times tables: https://ttrockstars.com/

The children can practise counting in steps of 2, 5 and 10, forwards and backwards, and practise reciting the times tables up to 12 X 2. 5 or 10.

If they can do this easily, you could ask them times tables questions in random order, e.g. 7 X 5, 2 X 5, 11 X 5, and practise answering the related division questions, e.g. what is 12 ÷ 2?

If your child is ready to move on to different times tables, the next one we learn in Year 2 is the x3 times table.

Reading practise:

One of the most important things that the children can do each day is to practise their reading. Any reading they do is valuable, whether it is reading a book from home, a comic, instructions for a game, a recipe or an online book.

As well as practising their sounding out and key word sight knowledge, they can practise their comprehension skills by answering questions about what they have read.

Free levelled reading books can be found on the Oxford Owl website: https://home.oxfordowl.co.uk/reading/free-ebooks/ Please contact your child’s teacher via the year group email or in a message on the Google Classroom, if you need help to choose the right levelled book for your child.
