Function

1. Address bar Displays your current location in the folder structure as a series of links separated by arrows.

2. Back and Forward buttons

Enable you to navigate back and forth between folders you have already

opened.

3. Column

headings These identify the columns; click the headings to sort the file list.

4. Details pane Displays the most common properties associated with the selected file.

5. Favorites list A list of commonly used folders.

File list Displays the contents of the active folder selected in the Navigation pane.

Library A collection of items, such as files and folders, assembled from various locations.

Navigation pane The area on the left side of a folder window that enables you to view the folder structure in a vertical list. In the computer window, displays the Favorites list, a list of folders and storage devices, and all libraries.

Title bar The bar at the top of a window; often displays the name of the program and the name of the open document.

Toolbar Provides buttons to perform common tasks.

1. Click the Start button, and then click Computer. 2. Expand (use the tree in the Navigation pane

and click the black and white triangles) the Pictures library, and then click the Public Pictures folder.

3. Right-click the Sample Pictures folder. From the shortcut menu, click Send to, and then from the menu, click Desktop (create shortcut).

4. Use the procedure you practiced in Step 3 to create a desktop shortcut to the Sample Music folder and Sample Videos folder – both of these folders are in the Public folders under Music

5. Close the computer window and minimize any other program windows that are open. 6. Double-click the shortcut icon to the Sample

Pictures folder on the desktop.

7. Close the Sample Pictures folder. Double-click the shortcut icon to the Sample Music folder on the desktop.

8. Close the Sample Music window. In an open area of the desktop, right-click one time.

From the shortcut menu, point to New, and click Folder.

9. For the new folder name, type Favorite Folders and press Enter.

10.Point to the shortcut icon for the Sample Music folder. Drag the icon onto the Favorite Folders folder, and release the mouse button.

11.Use the technique you practiced in Step 10 to drag the icons for the Sample Videos and

Sample Pictures folders onto the Favorite Folders folder.

13.Close the Favorite Folders window. Open Internet Explorer (or another browser) and type www.archives.gov in the Address box and press Enter. From the menu, click File, point to Send, and then click Shortcut to Desktop. Click Yes if prompted. Close the

browser window. (In Internet Explorer 8 or 9, no menu bar appears by default. Press Alt first to display the menu bar.)

14.Use the skills you practiced previously to start the Snipping Tool and create a Full-screen snip of the screen. Save a copy of this snip to the folder where you store your files. Name the file U1CH01ShortcutStudentName, substituting

your name as indicated. Close the Snipping Tool mark-up window.

15. Submit your snip as directed.

1. Right-click the shortcut to the

National Archives website. On the shortcut menu, click Rename. Type NARA and press Enter.

2. Double-click the Favorite Folders icon to open the folder. Right-click the Music shortcut, and then from the shortcut menu, click

3. Close the Properties dialog box and the Favorite Folders window. Point to the Favorite Folders

folder and right-click. From the shortcut menu, click Delete.

4. In the Delete Folder dialog box, click Yes.

5. Double-click the NARA shortcut to confirm that the shortcut works, and close the browser

window. Click the NARA shortcut icon one time to select it, and press Delete.

6. In the Delete File dialog box, click Yes to confirm the deletion.
