2013-2014Course Description
"Chemistry is an experimental science that combines academic study with the acquisition of practical and investigational skills. It is called the central science, as chemical principles underpin both the physical environment in which we live and all biological systems. Apart from being a subject worthy of study in its own right, chemistry is a prerequisite for many other courses in higher education, such as medicine, biological science and environmental science, and serves as a useful preparation for employment." -- Chemistry Diploma Programme Guide, IBO 2007

You will need to bring the following materials to class every day: Calculator (every day)
Textbook
3 ring binder, at least 1.5”, used exclusively for IB Chem Dividers
Composition or spiral notebook Paper
Pens & pencils USB drive/flash drive
These materials may be useful to you during the year: Colored pencils or markers
Scissors/glue/tape Index cards
*You will also be responsible for identifying and supplying various inexpensive materials with which to conduct your experiments throughout the year.
Web Site
I maintain my Google Site for students to stay current with class information. My web site will provide students and parents with a better interface with Powerschool. You will need to use the following website https://sites.google.com/site/michaelaaronrhs/ for:
Printing notes for class
Keeping up with assignments during absence Viewing and printing class documents
Keeping track of past and future assignments from the calendar Links to videos, simulations, and help sites
RHS IB Chemistry Syllabus
RHS IB Chemistry SL/HL follows the IB Curriculum very closely. Minor additions are included in order to expose students to the background chemistry necessary to fully understand the concepts presented in IB. RHS strives to guide students towards their goal of becoming independent life-long learners, according to the IB learner Profile. Please make a copy of the appropriate 2-year syllabus checklist and keep track of your progress.
Not only will this course fulfill a portion of your graduation requirement for the Meridian School District, but as an IB student you have the opportunity to attempt to earn college credit at participating
institutions. In order to have this opportunity, you must pay the appropriate IB fees, sit for 3 exams written by the IBO in the spring of your senior year, and adequately fulfill the requirements for this course. Your overall score is calculated by your performance on the 3 exams (these “External Assessments” count for 76% of your score) and your performance throughout this course (we will complete “Internal Assessments” which will count for 24% of your score). For more information on the IB Diploma Program or individual courses, see our IB Coordinator, Mrs. Hunter.

Syllabus Options: Both SL and HL students will study 2 out of the 7 Options (the class and the instructor must agree on which 2 Options to study)
It is up to you to get things done!
Throughout this course the responsibility will be put on you, the student, to take charge of your own learning. It is up to you to make the most of the course – to prepare yourself for the exam, to complete the practical requirements and to enjoy yourself as you learn chemistry, the central science.
Expectations for Chemistry Students:
1. You will, for the most part, direct your own learning and make the most of the resources available to you.
2. You will keep track of your progress through a provided spreadsheet (syllabus checklist). 3. You will keep your notes and files ordered and easy-to-navigate.
4. You will be able to find any digital document (on your thumb drive, network drive, or laptop) as soon as it is requested
5. You will check your information is correct before you commit it to memory. 6. You will ask when you need help.
7. You will offer help to those in need.
8. You will work safely in the lab and clean up after yourself. 9. You will be on time and prepared to take an active role in class.
10. You will submit assignments on time, in the right format, and submit a digital copy as needed.

ASSESSMENT and GRADING
Students’ grades will be determined by the following categories:
Assignments 25%
Labs 25%
Notebook 10%
Exams 30%
Assignments – Throughout the course, assignments will be given to familiarize students with content and concepts within the course. These assignments may require class time, time outside of class, or both.
A NOTE ABOUT HOMEWORK: Students will be expected to spend at least 30 minutes a day outside of class working on IB Chemistry. It should be noted however that formal homework (to be collected for a grade) will NOT be assigned every night.
Notebook –
“Notebook” refers to the Chemistry binder and the lab notebook, in the form of a
composition or spiral notebook. Colleges are recommending that science students keep a
science lab notebook to act as a portfolio as evidence of their scientific education.
Since this is a two year course that culminates in a comprehensive exam, organization will be a
key skill. Throughout the course, you will need to maintain your notebook in such a way that it
will be a resource to you for the IB exams.
Each student must bring these items to class every day.
Students must keep science assignments organized and complete daily work in the
binder.
If you are absent for a day, you need to make up missed work in your binder/notebook.
The binder and notebook will be assessed at least once per quarter.
It is your responsibility to meet your required lab hours and to get enough marks to satisfy
the IBO’s criteria.
Lab Work – Students will demonstrate their ability to design experiments, conduct experiments while collecting and analyzing data, draw conclusions from experiments conducted and reflect on the
experimental process through written lab reports. This work will be submitted in a laboratory notebook at least once a semester.
Quiz, Test, and Final Exams – Tests and quizzes should be studied for and taken seriously. Test questions will be similar to the type of questions given on IB exams.
Internal Assessments and Practical Work
You will be responsible for keeping a laboratory notebook and logging your practical work hours. Chemistry SL students must log 40 hours of practical work. Chemistry HL Students must log 60
hours.
o These hours do not include write-up time. These practical work hours can be arranged on your own time.
Internal assessments make up 26% of your final grade.
Paper copy of all your write-ups should be kept in your folder. You will be able to produce any write-up whenever asked. Some of these will be submitted to the IBO moderators.
You should keep a digital copy of all practical work (backup these often)
practical investigation should be written up as soon as possible after the data collection has been completed.
It is your responsibility to meet your required lab hours and to get enough marks to satisfy the IBO’s criteria.
Practical Work Write-ups
Write-ups will be submitted digitally.
All write-ups are expected to be complete, regardless of the criterion being assessed. Write-ups are due no later than one week after the practical investigation.
Hours from your practical work will be logged on your 4PSOW form. Practical write-ups are individual work.
Sources must be acknowledged appropriately. Academic Honesty must be followed.
Late Work and Missed Work Policies
Making up missed work, tests and quizzes
Make up work is to be done on your own time except for tests and quizzes. Missed labs may not be made up due to the number of students and courses being taught in this room, in addition to the fast pace of the course. It is strongly advised that you miss as few days as possible.
If you were absent on the day an assignment to be collected (i.e., with a due date) was assigned, the assignment will be due the class period following the official due date. If you were present on the day an assignment to be collected (i.e., with a due date) was
assigned, but were absent on a day in between the day the assignment was issued and the due date, the assignment will be due on the official due date.
If you were present on the day an assignment to be collected (i.e., with a due date) was assigned, but were absent on the due date, the assignment will be due the day you return to class.
If you were absent the day a test or quiz was given, you must make up the test or quiz within two class days of the absence. You are responsible for making arrangements with Mr. Aaron to take the test or quiz either during Lunch Detention or after school during AAP.
Late Work
Late work will not be accepted throughout a quarter or semester:
Assigned work is due on the date set by Mr. Aaron. For an assignment to receive full credit, it must be received by the due date.
Lab Rules for IB Chemistry Students
Wear appropriate attire for safe work in the lab (closed toe shoes, apron, goggles, gloves, etc.) Long hair tied back
Eating, drinking, and chewing gum are forbidden. Come prepared will all notes and materials.
Although you make be allowed to complete labs on your own time, it is essential that a member of the RHS Staff is with you at all times.
All materials and equipment must be cleaned up safely and tidily.
All breakages must be reported immediately. They may need to be paid for. Gas, Fans, and Lights must be turned off before you leave lab.
