“‘You are what you eat” is a familiar statement nowadays and most people have come to recognise that whatever we eat or do not eat has a major impact on our health. Here at Nellsar Care Homes, we believe eating healthier is really important, particularly as we get older.

Having a balanced diet that provides all the nutrients the body needs, helps us to stay in good shape both physically and mentally as well as providing us with a defence against infections. However, as we get older, our relationship with food can change. Age related mental and physical conditions can impact on eating habits. With this in mind, we guarantee a commitment to provide a healthy and nutritious diet to all those in our care.

We believe, by using the right ingredients we can adapt and create enjoyable and appetising

meals that contain the necessary nutrients essential for maintaining a balanced diet and our experienced Chefs have created menus of delicious, nutritious food to suit all tastes and dietary requirements.

It is important to us that our residents enjoy what they eat and we aim to provide a high quality dining experience in each of our Homes.

To achieve this, our Chefs prepare menus which include fresh ingredients, ensuring every meal is not only healthy and nutritious but also looks inviting, tastes delicious and caters to a variety of preferences and dietary requirements.

At Nellsar Care Homes, all meals are freshly cooked and as the seasons change, so do our menus ensuring only the best fresh ingredients are used. Our Chefs consult with residents on a regular basis to ensure we understand

individual preferences, religious and cultural backgrounds and favourite meals, but food is just one part of the eating experience.

We understand how important mealtimes are to our residents and the staff in our Homes are committed to making them an enjoyable part of each day. At mealtimes, our residents can choose where and what time they would like to eat, whether it be al fresco in the warmer months, their own room or in the restaurant.

We recognise the importance of ambience and strive to create an enjoyable atmosphere while residents dine. Mealtimes are a good opportunity for social interaction and as such, we invite visitors to join our residents should they wish, and for special occasions, bespoke*

dining can be arranged.

The main purpose of nutritional management is to:

• Maintain and ensure adequate nutrition and hydration

• Apply the correct and safe texture modified diet

• Maximise nutritional intake while maintaining safe eating

Hydration

Having enough to drink is essential to maintain our health and well-being. We encourage our residents to drink the recommended 6-8 cups/glasses each day and each of our homes provide a drinks menu, available throughout the day offering a wide variety of hot and cold options to tempt all tastes and palates.

Special diets

In addition to being trained in how to cook delicious and well-prepared food, our Chefs are

trained in food safety and hygiene, nutrition and special diets. They are experienced and skilled in providing particular meals including those required for weight management, diabetes and modified texture foods that include soft, mashed and puréed varieties, using a wide range of fresh foods and

presenting each dish so that it looks colourful and appetising.

Catering for residents at risk of malnutrition

For a variety of reasons, it is fact that some older people who move in to Care Homes are suffering from, or are at risk of malnutrition and it is important that we identify those people who are vulnerable to being malnourished.

When entering a Nellsar Care Home, all residents are screened and monitored to ensure they are eating and drinking well, particularly in their first few weeks.

Our experienced and skilled staff complete the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST) for each new resident. MUST has been validated for use in hospitals, community and care settings to assist with developing individualised care plans and further monitoring where required.

Our staff are experienced in managing those who are slow eaters or who require encouragement to eat and drink. This includes providing appropriate assistance and allowing extra time to eat meals, as well as providing smaller portions with second servings to ensure food is kept hot and remains appetising.

Please take a look at a few of our sample weekly menus.
