David: So Emily, how was Australia?

Emily: It was amazing.

Laura: What sort of jobs did you get?

Emily: I had three different jobs. I was a housekeeper, and I did some waitressing, and some office work as well. As a housekeeper, the work was quite hard and boring, but my colleagues were so friendly, and we only worked in the morning, so we could go to the beach in the afternoon, which was great.

David: That’s really cool.

Laura: What about the other job?

Emily: I waitressed in Byron Bay, and there were loads of tourists, so the tips were really, really good. But the work was quite hard, it was long hours. And office work was okay, it was just nine to five.

Regular verbs ending in a consonant + vowel + consonant → double the last consonant For example:

Hi Emily,

Good to see you here. Do you remember me? We worked together at Byron Bay. Best wishes,

Tom

Tom

No, I came back to Gloucester last month. And you?

Tom

No, we broke up.

Tom

A week before I left Byron, I found out that she was cheating on me. :-(

Tom

I discovered that she already had a boyfriend in Spain. I saw one of her messages to him on her mobile. She wrote that she missed him a lot and couldn’t wait to see him again. So she’d been lying to me all the time. We had a huge row but she didn’t want to leave him. So I broke up with her.

Tom

It was diffi cult, but I’m OK now … Hey Tom,

Of course I remember you! Great to hear from you. I’m very well. How are you? Are you still in Australia?

Love, Emily

Emily

I came back to Bristol two weeks ago. Are you still seeing Marie?

Emily

Oh, I’m sorry to hear that. What happened?

Emily

You’re kidding! Really?

Choosing a Career

Emily

Tom

What are you doing now? Are you going back to college?

Tom

Why did you decide to break off your studies?

Tom

I’m working as a sales assistant at the moment. In September I’m going back to college, to study Electrical Engineering.

Tom

I like doing something technical. I also think that there are good career opportunities for electricians. When you decide what you want to study, you should keep that in mind too.

Tom

That’s important too, I agree. But what if your studies are really interesting, but you can’t fi nd a job after leaving school? There’s a lot of unemployment at the moment, and it’s not always easy for young people to fi nd a job.

I think that your studies should not only be fun, but also useful.

Tom

That sounds like a good idea. Good luck with your decision! Emily

I studied Accounting before I went to Australia, but I stopped. I want to go back to school in September, but I’m not sure yet what I’m going to do.

Emily

I thought accounting was really boring. I hate sitting at a desk all day. I prefer doing something more active. But I don’t know yet what exactly. How about you?

Emily

Cool. Why did you choose that subject?

Emily

I don’t care about having a great career. For me, the most important thing is that I enjoy my work. I want to fi nd a job that suits me.

Emily

That’s true. Maybe you’re right … I’ll think about it. Anyway, I’m meeting a job adviser this week.

Answer the following questions about yourself. Write complete sentences.

What do you study?

Why did you choose this course?

What do you like about the course?

What don’t you like about it?

Which job would you like to get after you leave school?

Which things do you find important in a job?

Did you think about job opportunities when you decided what you wanted to study?

How important is a career for you?

Did other people give you advice when you had to choose a course? If so, what did they say?

Did you agree with them?

ASSIGNMENT

Your younger cousin is going to college next year. S/he isn’t sure which course to choose and sends you an email to ask for your advice.

S/he wants to know: Which subjects are fun and which aren’t? And what do you think is important when choosing a career? Reply to your cousin’s email. In your email, write down your opinion in at least 6 sentences.

Complete this exercise in a separate notebook or on a piece of paper you can put in a folder.

During my working holiday in Australia, I had many wonderful experiences. My favourite experience was our boat trip to the Whitsunday Islands. We chose a 2 days 2 nights trip on a racing boat, which was brilliant. The beds were uncomfortable, so I didn’t get much sleep, but the experience was worth it. We watched the sunset out at sea, visited Whitehaven Beach, saw sea turtles, and saw a family of dolphins, two adults and a baby, swimming in the lights of the boat at night. The highlight was diving the Great Barrier Reef.

Working in Australia

Emily:

My first job in Australia was housekeeping in a hotel. I was really lucky and got this job through an advert on a hostel notice board. Although the work wasn’t glamorous, I was working with great people and we had lots of fun. The best part was that the work was mainly in the mornings, so we had time to enjoy the beach in the afternoons!

I also worked as an office worker for a while. It was easy to get an office job because I already had some experience and I studied Accounting before I came to Australia. The work itself was a bit boring, but it made it possible for me to live like a ‘normal’ person, working from nine to five, and to meet more locals.
