is a measure of bias in the initial prior beliefs. The weights in (4.3.6) form a geometric progressions in ρ; hence, the variables increase unbounded in their variance and convergence cannot hold true in a strongly connected social network, unlessρ=1. This is due to the fact thatρupper bounds the average degree of the graph [194, Chapter 2], and every node in a strongly connected graph has degree greater than or equal to one, subsequentlyρ1for all strongly connected graphs.

Remark4.5 (Polarization, data incest and unlearning). The unlearning in the case ofρ > 1

in Theorem 4.4, which applies to all strongly connected topologies except directed cir- cles (whereρ = 1, see Subsection 4.3.2 below), is related to the inefficiencies associated with social learning and can be attributed to the agents’ naivety in inferring the sources of their information, and their inability to interpret the actions of their neighbors rationally [195]. In particular, when ρ > 1the noise or randomness in the agents’ observations is amplified at every stage of network interactions; since the agents fail to correct for the repetitions in the sources of their observations as in the case of persuasion bias argued by DeMarzo, Vayanos and Zwiebel [47], or data incest argued by Krishnamurthy and Hoiles [27]. When ρ > 1 the effect of the agents’ priors is also amplified through the network interactions and those states θ^ for whichβ(^θ) > 0 in (4.3.6), will be asymptotically re- jected asPtτ=0ρτ(1−ρ)β(θˇ)→ −∞, irrespectively of the observed dataΛτ(θˇ), τ∈N0.

This phenomenon arises as agents engage in excessive anti-imitative behavior, compensat- ing for the neighboring priors at every period [97]. It is justified as a case of choice shift toward more extreme opinions [5, 6] or group polarization [7, 8], when like-minded people after interacting with each other and under the influence of their mutually positive feedback become more extreme in their opinions, and less receptive of opposing beliefs.
