A SPELLING EXPERIMENT.
(Mul ti-c hoice material Vs a common teach ing t e c h n i q u e 0)
The f ollow ing experiment was an attempt to find out if simple m u l t i choice t eaching programs were more effective than a normal teach ing techniq that of telling a pupil to study a word list wit h a view to i m p r ovin g his spel ling of the words.
.The multi-choice programs used were of a type th&t a teacher could easily prepare and w h ich were in use daily, both in b o o k form and machine p r e s e n t e d , at M i l t o n school. The students employed as subjects in the
experiment were, as part of their re medial studies, u s i n g an abridged and simplified versio n of R.L. S t e v e n s o n ’s "Treasure Island." The wo rd*us ed in the test were taken from the b o o k . •
Procedure: The subjects were three groups each of five dull and backward m i ning entrants, i.e. they all returned scores in the lower end of the third quartile or the fourth quartile of the A H V Intelligence Test (68) and all produced r e a d i n g scores on the scho nell Graded V o c a b u l a r y Test and the Silent B Test (6.6) at least five years below their chronological age.
The material employed v/as two lists, each of thirty-three words, seleeted f r o m an abridged and s implified v ersion of "Treasure Island." T h e y are referred to as 'A 1 and ’B 1 lists. K a c h grout was given a spelling test and the scores rec orded under A and B.
The teachin g mat erial was pr epare d as follows i-

The subjects were divided into ’A* group, nine subjects and *B! group 8 subjects. However, as only 12 completed all the trials and were present at the final test^on ly these are considered. Ther e were 8 from the 'A* group and k from the 'B1 group. This number is further
reduced by one fro m the 'Af group whose scores both pre and post-tes t were equal and theiefore cancelled each other o u t . for the purpo ses of the wilcoxon Signed Panics Test.
The subjects completed six tr ia l s , ( e a c h l a s t i n g 15 minutes) du r i n g three sessions each of 30 minutes. At each s ess ion the ’A 1 group spent
15 minutes w o r k i n g wit h the ’A ! Mu lti-choice w o r d series and 15 minutes wit h the fB r list on cards. The *Bf group u s i n g the !B f M u l t ichoi ce word series and the ,A* list on cards.
Ttfhen u s i n g the Multi-choice series they wrote the selected wo r d and checked its correctness. W h e n u s i n g a card list they either copied the words, at the first trial, copied or put the word into phrases or
sentences i n the second trial, and i n the third trial, after l o o k i n g at the
