In this study, surgical acute abdomen occurred most commonly in the 3rd decade of life with male predominance. Acute appendicitis was the commonest cause of surgical acute abdomen with female predominance, though with a higher negative appendicectomy rate compared to the male. There was a strong relationship between pre-operative diagnosis and intra-operative diagnosis as evidenced by correlation coefficient of 0.99. Peritonitis, hypovolaemic shock, wound infection and wound dehiscence were the complications associated with prolonged hospital stay.

The outcome of treatment in this study was observed to be influenced by late presentation and delayed surgical intervention. Based on these, the author recommends that early presentation by patients with acute abdominal condition is important and prompt evaluation and intervention will go a long way to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with surgical acute abdomen. In addition, in view of the high negative appendicectomy rate in the female patients, there is the need for thorough pelvic examination in any female patient with surgical acute abdomen and where indicated a diagnostic laparoscopy should be employed.

93 6.3 LIMITATION OF STUDY

Due to financial constraint on the part of the patients, some investigations like abdominal CT scan and laparoscopy were not done which would have improved the clinical diagnosis.
