Electrical Engineering: The bachelor of science in electrical engineering degree program prepares its graduates for a successful career in the rapidly evolving and intellectually challenging field of electrical engineering. The Department requires its

graduates to develop a strong understanding of the relevant mathematics, computer programming and natural science concepts needed by practicing electrical engineers. Graduates must demonstrate an ability to apply this knowledge in several

fundamental areas of electrical engineering, including communication systems, control systems, digital signal processing, digital systems, electromagnetics, micorelectronics, and power systems. They also must demonstrate sufficient knowledge and

technical skills needed to complete a major design experience and to function as a member of a multi-disciplinary team.

Computer Engineering: The bachelor of science in computer engineering degree program prepares its graduates for a successful career in the interdisciplinary field of computer engineering. The program is built on the foundation of the electrical engineering program. Graduates have an opportunity to prepare for advanced graduate-level training or a professional career in or built upon a variety of computer engineering application areas including digital systems, digital signal processing, computer networks and VLSI design.

ABET

The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) requires that all students graduating from an ABET-accredited program meet certain course requirements. Completion of the A.A. degree will not necessarily meet these requirements. Prospective majors should select courses after consulting an advisor.

Prerequisite Coursework:

Students must complete the following prerequisites required for admission in preparation for the upper division major.

Students are encouraged to complete these in the freshman and sophomore years. All may also apply to other requirements.

Both electrical and computer engineering MAC X311 (4) Calculus I

MAC X312 (4) Calculus II MAC X313 (4-5) Calculus III

MAP X302 (3) Differential Equations or MAP X305 (3) Engineering Math I CHM X045, X045L (3,1) General Chemistry I with Lab

PHY X048C (5) General Physics A with Lab PHY X049C (5) General Physics B with Lab

Note: State-wide common prerequisites are always under review. For the most current information and for acceptable alternative courses, visit the “Common Prerequisites Manual.” This is available from the “Student Services” section of http://www.flvc.org.

Requirements for Progression to the Upper-Division Major

To be admitted, students must complete at least 52 hours of credit with an adjusted GPA of 2.0, including at least one-half of the required hours in the Liberal Studies program, including all of Area I and II (English, Math). In addition, the following

requirements must be met:

• A grade of C or better in EGN 1004L (1) First Year Engineering Lab; and, a grade of C or better, from any institution attended, in Calculus I, Calculus II, General Chemistry I with Lab, and General Physics I with Lab. A single repeated attempt in only one of these courses is permitted.

Mapping

Mapping is FSU’s academic advising and monitoring system. Academic progress is monitored each Fall and Spring semester to ensure that students are on course to earn their degree in a timely fashion. Transfer students must meet mapping guidelines to be accepted into their majors. You may view the map for this major at www.academic-guide.fsu.edu/.
