Interior Design is concerned with the design of all interior spaces, both residential and commercial, and the total field of environmental design. Students are prepared to meet professional requirements and criteria. A professional designer is defined by the national accrediting body of the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) as one who is “qualified by education and experience to identify, research and creatively solve problems relative to the function and quality of man’s proximate environment.” The competencies taught include principles and elements of design, design analysis, space planning and programming, drafting and technical drawing, and graphic presentation of design solutions. Interior Design is studied in close relationship to art and architecture. There is an active student chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), and the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) which is open to all majors in the program.

Special note to transfer students: There is a special summer program for transfer students through which they may complete the prerequisite/diagnostic courses. Contact the department for more information about the summer program.
Requirements for Admission to the Major
The interior design program is limited access based on available faculty and space. The 4-year program of study incorporates a series of diagnostic/prerequisite courses in the first two terms of study. At the end of the spring term, a First Year Review will be held, and the top 40 students (essentially two studios of 20 each) will be allowed to progress into the second year and above courses. Transfer students may take all of the diagnostic/prerequisite courses during the summer term and compete equally for the fall enrollment available.
Mapping
Mapping is FSU’s academic advising and monitoring system. Academic progress is monitored each Fall and Spring semester to ensure that students are on course to earn their degree in a timely fashion. Transfer students must meet mapping guidelines to be accepted into their majors. You may view the map for this major at www.academic-guide.fsu.edu/.
