1. Learning Activities
Completion of six learning activities is required during the semester. These learning activities include case studies, BMI calculation, skills checks and will enhance or evaluate learning. Each is worth 10-25 points and will be posted on the N524 Titanium site in the appropriate module.
2. Initial Health History
This assignment consists of completion of a complete initial health history on a
child/student (between 3 and 18 years old) who has a health condition and who is being evaluated for Special Education, 504 plan or an IHP.
3. Quizzes/Tests
There will be eight quizzes/tests given throughout the semester. They will be open book, time-restricted (30 minutes to 1 hour) and will be available to be taken online for two to three days during the module relating to that topic.
4. Focused Assessments: System Write-Ups
A system-focused (episodic) history and physical exam are performed when the child presents with an acute problem (illness or injury) or exacerbation of a chronic condition. Ten focused assessment, system-specific write-ups are required for this course; one for each of the following systems (Skin; Head/ Neck/ Ears; Eyes; Face/Nose/Oral/Dental;
Musculoskeletal/Scoliosis; Thorax/Lungs; Cardiovascular; Abdomen; Neurologic system and Mental Health). Each is worth 10 points.
5. Health History and Physical Exams
This is the final, culminating assignment for this course. It consists of a write up of a comprehensive initial health history and a complete physical exam on a child/student (between 3 and 18 years old) who has either a developmental disability and/ or physical disability. If you did your initial health history assignment (due week 3) on a child in the 3 to 11 year old age group, then this HH/PE must be done on an adolescent age youth, 12-18 years old. Conversely, if you did your initial health history assignment (due week 3) on a child in the 12-18 year old age group, then this HH/PE must be done on an child between 3 and 11 years old.
You are required to complete a comprehensive initial health history and physical exam (as much of the physical exam that can be obtained given your setting--no male or female reproductive exams are expected.) You need to find the child/youth to assess; the client may be a patient at a clinic, or a student at school (with appropriate permission). It may not be your own child or in the case of the adolescent, a very close relative. The write up should be appropriate to be included in an IHP, IEP or 504 and written to be understood by non-medical school personnel.
6. Clinical Experience Fieldwork
Each student will complete 40 documented (log) hours of clinical experience with an approved preceptor (PNP, pediatrician) in a pediatric or school-based clinic. All 40 hours must be completed to pass this course. You may count up to 2 hours (each) for vision screening, dental screening and scoliosis screening under the supervision of and signed off by a credentialed school nurse (or other professional i.e. dentist).
Log (P/F)
The log is Pass/Fail. However, it must be completed and include required elements to pass the course. The log will be turned into the faculty (via US mail or in TITANium) week 8 and week 16 documenting lab hours and experiences. The log must include dates and times, clinical site, preceptor and a brief statement of activities participated in during that period of time (see log template in N524 Titanium site under Assignments). Start a new log for each day.
For a passing grade the log submissions must include:
1. Completed cover sheet for midterm and final submissions
2. Documentation showing at least 10 (of each) vision, dental and scoliosis screenings were performed.
3. Documentation showing that the student performed a minimum of 5 history and physical exams on each of the following systems (on children of different ages):
• Head, Neck and Regional Lymphatics • Skin
• Ears
• Eyes (including vision screening)
• Cardiovascular system
• Abdomen and Regional Lymphatics • Neurologic system
• Musculoskeletal system (including scoliosis screening).
ON CAMPUS MEETING REQUIREMENTS
This is an on-line class and students will not be required to meet on campus. An optional vision screening training in the College of Optometry in Fullerton will be offered March 21, 1-4 PM).
