From the Add/Edit Schedule tab of the Schedule Information dialog box, you can define or modify these values and settings:
Schedule name
Enter a unique name of up to 121 characters including spaces.
Type of job
Select the type of backup or archive to be performed by this schedule. SeeVMB backup typesfor a detailed description of each type.
Default schedule
(Available only when the selected job type is Full machine backup or Incremental backup.) Select to make this schedule the default backup schedule for the selected backup type.
Only one default schedule for each backup type (full or incremental) is allowed. This check box is not selected by default.
Tip! Default backup schedules use a different icon ( ) on the Schedules tab to differentiate them from other schedules.
Default backup schedules automatically discover and assign any virtual machine clients that are not already scheduled for the relevant backup type. This occurs when you click OK, after selecting the Default schedule check box. STORServer VMB continues to scan for and add unprotected clients every few minutes. You can prevent VMB from adding virtual machine clients that you do not want scheduled for backup by selecting the Disable clients in all schedules check box in client properties. You may want to do this for a TSM server virtual machine or a backup server that is running as a virtual machine.
NOTE! STORServer VMB cannot be used to back up a backup server that is running as a virtual machine.
Virtual machine clients are automatically removed from a default backup schedule when they are assigned to another, non-default schedule that performs the same backup type. If you remove clients from a default schedule that are not assigned to another schedule, they will be re-added.
Disable this schedule
(Optional) Select this check box to disable this schedule indefinitely. If the schedule is a
default backup schedule (that is, the Default schedule check box is selected), it will continue to discover and add virtual machine clients that are not otherwise scheduled for the relevant backup type, but no backups will be performed until the schedule is re-enabled. To prevent further automatic client discovery, clear the Default schedule check box.
Tip! Disabled schedules use a different icon ( ) on the Schedules tab to
differentiate them from other (enabled) schedules. You can disable or re-enable multiple schedules from the Schedules tab by using the Disable Schedules and Enable Schedules commands (respectively) on the shortcut menu. SeeEnabling and disabling schedules.
Log retention period
(Optional) Specify the number of days to retain error log information for this schedule. This determines how long status information is available on the Status tab. The default period is 7 days.
NOTE! STORServer VMB stores status information (logs) in its internal database.
To conserve database space, set this value to a minimum number of days.
Management Classes
Define data management classes on this tab to apply different data retention policies to your virtual machine data than those specified by the default management class, which is used by default, and/or to allow VMware metadata files to be stored on disk when virtual machine data is being backed up or migrated to physical tape media.
Tip! The following retention policies are recommended for virtual machine data:
l Versions Data Exists (how many backup versions TSM keeps of a file that is on your local drive) — Unlimited
l Versions Data Deleted (how many backup versions TSM keeps of a file that you have deleted from your local drive) — 1
l Retain Extra Versions (how many days will elapse before the last remaining inactive backup version of a file is deleted) and Retain Only Version (how many days will elapse before all but the most recent backup version of a file that is on your local drive is deleted) — The number of days that you want to keep these copies (45, for example)
Data management class
(Optional) Define this value to apply different retention policies to selected clients. (The default management class is used by default.) The management class that you specify here
controls retention of client data as well as associated control files, which are described in the next section.
Control management class
(Optional) Define a control management class to instruct TSM to store VMware metadata information about selected virtual machine clients and disks (also referred to as control files) on disk when backing up or migrating data files to tape. During a restore, the VMB user interface (or whatever UI you are using to perform the restore) can then quickly obtain the location of the files to restore. Otherwise, the UI could be unresponsive for a period of time, while attempting to locate the files, and could even hang indefinitely if the tape is stored in a vault, for example.
Specify a management class that uses a disk storage pool with no migration to tape. This management class affects the storage of control files only, and overrides the associated parameters specified in the data or default management class. Retention parameters specified in a control management class are ignored. Control files are expired along with virtual machine data files according to the retention policies set in the data management class or, if no data management class is defined, the default management class.
Schedule Frequency
Frequency
Indicate how often this schedule will run. Choices are as follows:
l Daily: Run every day of the week. This is the default frequency.
l Daily weekdays: Run on weekdays (Monday through Friday) only.
l Weekly: Run on a designated day every week.
l Monthly: Run on a designated date each month
l End of month: Run on the last day of each month.
l Start of month: Run on the first day of each month.
l End of quarter: Run on the last day of each calendar quarter.
l Start of quarter: Run on the first day of each calendar quarter.
l End of year: Run on the last day of each calendar year (Dec 31)
l Start of year: Run on the first day of each calendar year (Jan 1).
l Once: Run once on a designated date and time and then disable.
l Custom: Run at a specified interval. You can specify the number of days, hours, minutes, and seconds between start times.
Start time
Specify the time of day when the schedule will start.
Start date
Appears when Custom or Once is the selected frequency. Enter the date on which the custom or one-time-only schedule will run.
Day of week
Appears when Weekly is the selected frequency. Select the day of the week on which the weekly schedule will run.
Day of month
Appears when Monthly is the selected frequency. Enter the day of the month on which the monthly schedule will run.
Time between schedule start times (Days | Hours | Minutes)
Appears when Custom is the selected frequency. Specify the number of days, hours, and minutes to wait after the specified start time before rerunning the custom schedule.
