Status of the course in the study program “Arts Therapy”: obligatory choice in specialization Course description and Objectives of the course:

Objectives: to develop an understanding about the process of historical development and today’s situation in the visually plastic art therapy; about the multiformity of theoretical approaches and criteria for their appreciation; about the regularities in the development of arts therapy in connection with the other branches of science.

Course description: aims and application fields of the visually plastic art therapy. Activity of the art therapist in the field of health / social care / education by performing the own professional activity independently / in multiprofessional / multidisciplinary team. The specific features of arts therapy.

Work individually. Work in team (study type group, dynamic [analytic] closed group, thematic group). Factors of the arts therapy (artistic expressiveness / creative activity / symbolization;

psychotherapeutic relations; interpretation and verbal feedback [objectivisation and formation of sense]; in group – also inter-group communication and relations). Environment of the arts therapy (physical and symbolical). Characteristics of the safe therapeutic environment. Therapeutic effects (compensation, sublimation), their stability. Meaning of the non-verbal communication and creative self-expression. Verbalization of feelings. Types of optimization of therapeutic relations and conditions for the increase of therapy’s effectiveness.

Situation in modern art therapy, multiple approaches and experience of various countries. Education programs and professional unions. Integration of arts therapy in the health care system. Situation in Latvia. Integrative eclectic approach.

Process of the arts therapy and system of its description. Preparatory stages. Formation of psychotherapeutic relations and beginning of client’s / patient’s artistic activity / expression. Stage of strengthening and developing the psychotherapeutic relations and more productive client’s / patient’s representative activity / expression. Closing stage (termination). The selection and characterization of arts techniques in the context of visually plastic art therapy.

Sources of the arts therapy at the end of 19th century. Influences of the romanticism. Interest about the psychiatric patients and children’s art. Labour therapy and arts therapy. Art and arts therapy. Art at the hospitals. Art at the open studio (Allen). Arts therapy and medicine. Arts therapy as define of the direction (Hill). Pioneers of the arts therapy.

Prerequisites: Professional Activity in the Arts Therapy Practice I. Psychology of Personality, Psychology of Development.

Methods and forms of the studies.

Contact hours: interactive lectures and problem lectures; concretization of the mastered theoretical knowledge in seminars; practical classes; group discussions; work in small groups; analysis of the problem; presentation of the report and discussions. Consultations.

Independent work of the MA students: on student’s own account to cement the material from lectures by reading the given sources and to prepare for in-between test – test work. Search, selection and analysis of the literature with an aim to prepare the report. To make comparison of two theoretical approaches.

Learning outcomes: The MA students know influence of the enlarged context of the formation and development of arts therapy (development of the art and art’s criticism theory) on the formation and development of arts therapy in the world and Latvia; know theoretical principles of the visually plastic art therapy; know the present situation in the visually plastic art therapy. The MA students understand the necessity in choosing one or more theoretical conceptions in concordance with whom to form concrete plan in arts therapy, understand necessity to form and substantiate the own position.

The MA students can analyze and compare different theoretical approaches in the visually plastic art therapy step by step forming their professional thinking.

The MA students are able to be competent in multiversity of various theoretical statements of the question.

The MA students have an experience in analysis and comparison of various theoretical statements of the question.

Examination methods: an active participation in the seminars and systemic, independent mastering of the theoretical literature. In-between test – test work. Diary concerning the professional development. The summary of articles and report about one of the themes – 40%. The written examination – 60%, where one of the questions is comparison of two theoretical approaches.

Status of the course in the study program “Arts Therapy”: obligatory choice in specialization Course description and Objectives of the course:

Objectives: to make an understanding about the diversity and multiformity of interpretation of symbols, to develop skills for interpreting symbols in the frame of different theories, to form the skills in work by using the metaphors.

Course description: symbol and sign. Symbol and image. Symbol and metaphor. Symbol and myth. Diversity, importance, multi-dimension of the symbol. Steven’s theory: three kinds of activity – biological (initial), symbolic (secondary) and reflective (tertiary). Symbol interpretation theories. Anthropological perspective. Neurological perspective. Cultural perspective. Art. Freud’s psychoanalysis. Jung’s interpretation. Transpersonal approach. Application of the symbols in the process of arts therapy. Analysis of the symbols in the works created during the arts therapy.

Symbolic analysis of the process of the arts therapy. Symbol in the authentication of individuality.

Prerequisites: Psychology of individuality, Psychology of evaluation, Philosophy of art.

Methods and forms of the studies: Contact hours: interactive lectures; practical classes; group discussions; work in the small groups, simulation of the situation, analysis of the own experience.

Consultations.

Own work of the MA students: search of literature, selection and analysis with an aim to prepare interpretation symbols created during the three practical classes by using different perspectives.

To make widened analysis of one symbol including it in the interpretation of the myth. Design of an essay. Analysis of the own experience.

Learning outcomes:

The MA students know multi-form theoretical perspectives for interpretation of the symbols and approaches within the framework of arts therapy.

The MA students can search, select and analyze sources for the interpretation of symbols, include them in the context of interpretations.

The MA students are able to use imagery, symbolism and metaphors in the process of arts therapy.

The MA students have an experience in forming an attitude towards the multi-dimension, non-equipollent.

Objectives: to obtain the basic knowledge about different visual plastic art technigues, used in art therapy – dry and wet massive oriented, collage, different decorative technigues, three dimensional, linear, work with clay, different sizes of art works, and the basic principles and guidelines of analysing the art works.

Course description : The most often used art technigues in the process of art therapy and their psychoemotional effect on the creator. Precendence and individualities of different technigues.

The needed art materials and their preperation. The psychological meaning of the choice of certain materials and technigues. The integration of creative work in art therapy process. The basic principles of analysing art works in arttherapy process – the relative and conservative positions.The analysis of art works using different theoretical bases. Asking questions and emphatic listening. Ethics and risk management in art therapy process. Assessment of art works – aesthetic and phenomenological approach; assessment of the formal elements, the assessment of the individual peculiarities of client/pacient; assessment of the influence of cultural factors; the perception assessment and analyses of different symbols integrated in the art work. The quadrant analyses by Jolles (1977) and Bach (1990). The psychological meaning of colours. The defence mechanisms in cration of art work, assessment and analyses. The difference among art works created by children and adult clients/patients. Creativity and psychopatology.

The analysis and assessment of art works, created by Professional artists. Postmodernism. The qualities of creative process. The actual tendencies of contemporary art and their link to arts therapy.

Contact hours: interactive lectures; concretization of the gained knowledge by seminars and group discussions; work in small groups; analyses of problems; prezentations. Consultations.

Independent work of the MA students: to afforce individually the studied materials by reading the corresponding literature. Studying art books, visiting visual art exhibitions and galleries, summarization, analysis and syntheses of the conclusions, creation of art works using different technigues, analyses of own art works.

175 Learning outcomes:

The MA students know the premises of the creative process and it’s qualities, understand the basic principles of assessment and analyses of art work.

The MA students can integrate the creative work in art therapy process; formulate and describe their individual sensations, feelings and emotions linked to the creative process; use and explain to clients/patients the basic techinigues of creating art works.

The MA students are able to evaluate criticaly their creative potentiality, assess the resources of client/patient and to use their knowledge in practice.

The MA studets have an experiance in creation, assessment and analyses of visual plastic art works.

Examination methods: discussions and small tests in frames of study course (30%); the show of art works created in different techniques (70%)

Status of the course in the study program “Arts Therapy”: obligatory in specialization Course description and Objectives of the course:

Objectives: to acquire skills in discovering and promoting the creativity of clients/patients, to rose their interest about creative self-expression and the mehods of visual plastic art, to be able to motivate accordingly and support clients/patients in their creative process, to be able to attain therapetical result and to describe it.

Course description: The MA student has his/her study practice in an institution or enterpise (advisable, in a medical or social care orientated), where he/she works with clients/patients and small groups without preliminary knowledge in visual arts, rising ceative self-expression with methods of visual plastic art. Student chooses and describes accordant methods of passive art herapy for two different clients/patients with a concrete aim (actualization of a problem or harmonization of personality).

Student practically promotes creativity in a group of clients/patients or individually (minimum 2 sessions). After he/she organises and designs an exposition (exhibition) of the art works created by clients/patients. Chooses at least two different art works and presents the analyses of the art works and the creative process using definite criteria. Supervises his/her own experiance.

Perequisites: study course „Creation and anaysis of visual plastic art works”

Methods and forms of he studies :

Contact hours: introduction lectures; group discussions; work in small groups; observation;

prezentation; supervisions. Consultations.

Independent work of the MA students : Preperaion for supervision abouthe results of observation;

preperation and prezentation of theme „Using passive art therapy methods for two

clients/patients”. Presentation of the exposition of clients/patients art works. Reflection of the experiance.

Learning outcomes:

The MA student knows the basic principles of using passive art therapy and organising creative process according to the professional ethics.

The MA student can rise the creative potential of clients/patients, motivate them, oganise and design a small exhibition of clients/patients art works, analyse the art works using certain criterias, explain in an understandable language to cient/patient about the fiziological processes linked to creative working, ask questions and listen with emphaty.

The MA student is able to create therapetical relations with client/patient according to the needs of client/patient and the common aim. Are able to self refection.

The MA student has an experiance in integration of creative work in art therapy process.

Objectives: to form skills for choosing and using methods of research and assessment according to the situation, specifics of the clients / patients groups; to form skills for assessing a process of art therapy and its result; to improve understanding concerning supervisions and necessity to assess the own work in practice.
