William Atkinson
“Practical Mental Influence” begins with an introduction to the use of vibrations by the mind to control or influence others.
Atkinson states that this has been going on since the beginning of time with the use of power for both good and evil.
Historically, the field of science has been divided into material and natural sciences, where the materialists see “mind as just a blip in the system that is involuntary and untamed,” and naturalists study the effects of electricity, heat, light, gravity and more on the mind, believing it is of great use and influence of our body. Atkinson states that thought transference does exist and is accounted for by science. Physical science says everything in the world is manifesting vibrations that are vital for a material universe. Vibrations are constantly present in all forms of energy, light, heat, electricity, magnetism. And, just as we can distinguish tone and pitch of music and nature, our internal organs do the same with vibration at a wide range.
There is only one truth on the three planes: spiritual, mental and physical. While we are familiar with spiritual in the form of religion, and physical as in the blood and muscles in our bodies, mental is described as a close resemblance

between electrical and magnetic energy. The author states that the scientific facts one uses pertaining to electrical and
magnetic energy can be used to study mental energy. Here is how it works. The temperature of the brain fluctuates with
feeling and thought, and energy that is released must go out of the brain just as light, heat, electricity, magnetism and
radioactivity do. Thought is equal to induction.
“We sum up, therefore, our preceding observations by the conclusion that one mind can act at a distance upon another,
without the habitual medium of words, or any other visible means of communication...The action of one human being upon
another, from a distance, is a scientific fact.” Flammarion (French scientist)
When we think a thought, energy is generated and flows from the brain as a wave of mental energy, spreading into the environment in proportion to the strength of the thought as a thought-vibration. These vibrations have “the property of awakening similar vibrations in the minds of other persons coming within their field of force.” Also, the thought-force exists long after the thought has left, which could explain why some people get a certain feeling in particular cities or places around the world. Thoughts and feelings are contagious,
because of the Law of Vibration and mental induction, allowing

them to seep into the force fields and minds of other people.
Therefore, we can obtain mental influence over others.
Induction is when mental energy is transferring from one person to another. An example that everyone has experienced at some point in their lives would be the tension that can be felt in certain social situations or when a particular individual enters the room. Better yet, think of whenever you have been in the presence of someone famous or powerful. Notice how the energy felt during this time. Also, a good will individual is best to be around socially, as you will gain some of the good mental energy that radiates from this person helping to
strengthen yourself. This can be of great benefit for leaders such as presidents and bosses, orators, actors, preachers and teachers.
How would the power of mental influence and energy
work with two people if one person is enamored while the other person despises, and they are both sending strong vibrations?
The two would be neutral, canceling each other out unless one person is stronger. If the stronger person persists in using mental influence against the will of the other to win their love, they would succeed if only momentarily, as they would
eventually lose strength.

Thinking people are the only ones that are linked into the stream of conscious living wills, giving them a strong inductive effect on others' minds. However, groups that are made up of a large number of people who have the same thinking will
produce power by their combined effort.
“As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.”
Think about your actions and character, and leave the negatives buried deep in the sand. The act of using mental influence involves vibrations of willpower, masterfulness,
fascination, and attraction, and these can be sent by someone attempting to sway another person's desires, or change their opinions by conquering their willpower.
There are two main steps to manifesting mental influence.
First concentrate, and second, use mental imagery. However, most people cannot concentrate well enough to attempt this.
You can practice concentrating by thinking only of one subject or by completely tuning that subject out for a set period of time, and the mind will work to begin action. “The secret of mind
control lies in the control of attention, which lies in the exercise of will.” If you want mental influence you must focus your
mental force to a specific point.

Steps to Mental Influence
Cultivate voluntary attention. Create a movie screening room in your mind and visualize the situation unfolding as you want it to occur, and be as detail-specific as possible. It has been said that NBA superstar Michael Jordan mentally mapped out the victory of each basketball game by sitting on the
sidelines and concentrating on shooting baskets instead of actually playing the game. There are two types of mental influence:
1. Fascination 2. Hypnotism
While the book is not very clear on fascination, it is
described as being the manifesting of mental influence without passing it to someone else, while hypnotism manifests and passes mental influence. One method outlined in the book if you want someone to like you, is to form a thought “that person likes me” and then project the thought “you like me - you like me very much” to that person. Just make certain your intentions are pure and honorable.

Anton Mesmer who was a practitioner of mental influence from 1750 to 1800. Hypnosis works on the body by using the ether to travel between people. An astral-tube or “psychic wire”
serves as the tunnel for the mental energy. The way to fight fear of some things is to create “a burning desire for the opposite thing.” The characteristics associated the most with mental influence are inward strength, attractive, influence over others and an ardent desire to draw people to them. Remember, good thoughts are attracted to good minds. The way to keep safe from others is to keep your mind pure and unselfish. If you are having problems with certain people in your life, say to yourself “I am an Immortal Spirit, using the will within my ego.
Let me alone - I cast off your influence by the power of my spirit.” Next, “treat” them in your mind by sending thoughts of love and knowledge to remove their ignorance and selfishness.
Finally, put the person out of your mind, and do not fear or hate them any longer. They no longer exist in your mind. You are indifferent, and they no longer have control or influence over you.
Is this Program for Me?
Teachers, orators, actors, presidents, bosses, and
preachers can all benefit from this program of learning to use mental influence because you are able to learn how to influence

one person as well as a crowd. Some people are already using mental influence on others without realizing that this power is beyond them and can be controlled for their benefit. They
would learn a lot about themselves from this book. Anyone that has had problems with other negative people harassing them can use the power of blocking mental influence to keep their negative energy away.
Sum of it All
This book is written to inform people of the power of
practical mental influence for positive use in serving humanity.
By starting with scientific proof and physical evidence, the nonbeliever has the chance to understand what mental influence really is. Then, by applying the scientific evidence with real life scenarios, people can begin to accept the use of mental influence. Next, we are given steps to manifesting mental influence, the practical uses in the different types of mental influence such as hypnotism, that all explain how we can gain influence over one person or a group of people, and what the pros and cons are for keeping our influence positive and for the benefit of all involved. This book provides an
overview of mental influence for the practical person, as well as details about practicing this mind influencing power.
