5. Chapter Five: Wanting a Better Life

5.1. Professional Development

1. The sample size is the minimum required, a larger sample size with a multi-centre approach will be required to make a stronger inference.

2. Inability to determine precisely the duration of HIV infection as the disease is usually asymptomatic in the early stages.

3. Inability to do a comprehensive biochemical work-up of cardiovascular risks due to high cost.

4. Myocarditis is a potential pathogenic mechanism for left ventricular dysfunction in HIV positive patients, but histological evidence through cardiac biopsy is unavailable here.

5. Inability to do right sided cardiac catheterization which is the gold standard in diagnosis of pulmonary hypertension and right ventricular dysfunction..

6. Inability to do other more precise radiologic investigations of cardiac structure and function e.g.

tissue doppler imaging and CT scan of the heart due to prohibitive cost.
