6.2. Strategy Development and Deployment

6.2.1. Does the Institution have a formally stated quality policy? How is it developed, driven, deployed and reviewed?

The college is committed to provide a quality learning experience for all learners by continuously improving the quality of all aspects of its infrastructure and resources-support as well as curriculum areas – to impact learners’ achievements of the highest possible standards through constant self-evaluation and action planning.

The statement of policy is supported by a set of quality improvement procedures set out by the IQAC of the college. At the student level the quality of learning outcome is monitored by the personal tutors. Every personal tutor is requested to review learner’s progress regularly.

Review will be supported by analysis of learner, employer and stakeholder views and perception gathered by means of questionnaires.

The feedback on actions resulting from the review process is communicated to the faculty and staff consults via individual meetings by the principal.

6.2.2. Does the Institute have a perspective plan for development? If so, give the aspects considered for inclusion in the plan.

The institution develop a prospective plan usually for a period of 5 years taking into consideration the major factors such as

 Effective teaching and learning.

 Research consultancy and extension.

 Academia-industry interaction.

 Student carrier progression.

 Infrastructure development.

 Community/Nation development.

A Proposal is considered for inclusion, if it corresponds to any of the above aspects, and if the management is convinced that it will be benefited all the stakeholders and there are enough financial resources to make the proposal a reality.

6.2.3. Describe the internal organizational structure and decision making processes.

The internal organizational structure of the college is as narrated below.

The legal authority over the college is the governing council, consisting of the principal, senior faculty members, office bearers of SET and nominated members of Bangalore University as members. The Governing Council gives the principal the essential guidelines and directions in the administration of the college. The council meets at least once in every three months and draws out plans, policies and strategies of the college. The principal provides overall leadership and direction to the college and presides over its academic and administrative bureaus. Being the key representative of the college the principal fosters the public image of the college as a site of higher learning maintaining a close relationship with the affiliating University and the Government, and also forging points of common cause and agreement with the entire University community and its constituents. As an academic, administrative and financial head of the college, the principal reports directly to the governing council.

The principal is assisted heads of all academic departments. These department heads supervise instruction in individual disciplines and in this capacity lead the teaching staff in the department in ways that lead to the fulfillment of the set goals of the college. Various campus activities are carried out and monitored by the committees constituted for specific purposes and are in turn supervised by IQAC.

The superintendent is the ministerial head of the college’s administrative wing and reports directly to the principal. He is also entrusted with the responsibility of smoothening the college’s path to the achievement of its goals with the help of the ministerial staff in the office.

The librarian of the college with the assistance of three assistants looks after the most important learning resource of the college, the library, and disseminates its intellectual stock effectively.

6.2.4. Give a broad description of the quality improvement strategies of the institution for each of the following

Teaching & Learning

All quality improvements strategies of this college are focussed on the vision and mission of the college.

 Promoting the participation of faculty in orientation and refresher course, seminars and workshops.

 Support to faculty for achieving higher level relevant qualifications such as M.Phil., Ph.D., etc.

 Encourage faculty to visit other colleges and organizations to view their best practices and disseminate the practices in the college.

Research & Development

Encouragement is given to faculty members to take-up research activities like M.Phil, and Ph.D, and encouragement and support is also extended to the faculty to organize workshops and seminars. Financial assistance of Rs. 2 lakhs (maximum ceiling limit) from the management extended to the faculty members who are interested to take-up research activities. Faculty members are also encouraged to present research papers at various forums, seminars and symposiums.

Community engagement

The college organizes various activities for community engagement such as free health check-up camps, blood donation camps, awareness programmes etc. NSS volunteers and NCC cadets of the college are actively involved in various community oriented activities.

Human resource management

The college organizes spoken English and Sanskrit classes for those students who have not opted these subjects as one of the languages.

Industry interaction

The college maintained informal ways of interaction with the industries, more particularly with those industries, where the alumnae of the college are employed.

6.2.5. How does the Head of the institution ensure that adequate information (from feedback and personal contacts etc.) is available for the top management and the stakeholders, to review the activities of the institution?

The principal places the annual report of the college, covering both academic and non-academic activities conducted during the year to the management. This report is also placed before all the stakeholders during annual college day celebration, which is also made available in the form of college magazine. Feedback from all the stakeholders are collected periodically, consolidated and analyzed and placed before the top management for the future action and improvement. The confidential annual report of the staff is submitted to the management.

6.2.6. How does the management encourage and support involvement of the staff in improving the effectiveness and efficiency of the institutional processes?

The Management encourages and support total involvement of its staff the campus life and activities. There is a constant interaction between the management and staff in ways to achieve effectiveness and efficiency of all institutional processes. The staff representatives express their ideas and suggestions at the governing council meetings conducted periodically. The principal conducts the departmental meetings and staff council meetings to discuss the measures and strategies adopted for effective implementation of academic programs. Efficient and dedicated faculty is retained in the institution even after retirement, which serves as a motivation for the faculty in general. Advisory committees are constituted in consultation with the management which helps the principal on various matters of academic as well as financial, and the same is reviewed by the management periodically.

6.2.7. Enumerate the resolutions made by the Management Council in the last year and the status of implementation of such resolutions.

 UGC Recognition U/s 2(f) & 12 (B) : It was resolved to speed up the process of obtaining approval from UGC under Section 2(f) and 12 (B) of UGC Act, 1956 – Hon. General Secretary of SET personally visited the UGC office in Delhi, met the concerned officials and due to his interaction, the college obtained the approval.

 Purchase of library books: It was resolved to purchase the library books only through the suppliers approved by the management and the purchases should be only reference books – Implemented from 2013 onwards.

6.2.8. Does the affiliating university make a provision for according the status of autonomy to an affiliated institution? If ‘yes’, what are the efforts made by the institution in obtaining autonomy?

Yes, there is a provision in Bangalore University for according the status of autonomy to the college. However, as per the decision of the management of the college, the matter of seeking autonomy to the college has been deferred.

6.2.9. How does the Institution ensure that grievances / complaints are promptly attended to and resolved effectively? Is there a mechanism to analyse the nature of grievances for promoting better stakeholder relationship?

The staff secretary represents both teaching and non-teaching staff of the college. All the grievances individual or collective brought to the notice of the staff secretary, in turn he places them in the staff council meeting for discussion and redressed. The governing council of the college plays an important role in this regard.

There is a full-fledged grievance redress cell that looks into grievance / complaint raised by stakeholders. Suggestion box is kept nearby the principal’s chamber, where anyone can deposit their written grievances / suggestions. Every month the committee consolidates and brings the grievances to the notice of the principal. In most cases remedy is provided. The student welfare officers in charge take care of the grievances. The following are the grievances redressed.

 The salary of un-aided staff is enhanced.

 New staff rooms are provided.

 Health care – doctor is available in the clinic during college

hours.

6.2.10. During the last four years, had there been any instances of court cases filed by and against the institute? Provide details on the issues and decisions of the courts on these?

There are cases filed against the college. Cases are pending in the court for disposal.

1. Prof. Gandhi Devan Prabhu, Associate professor, Department of Commerce has filed a case against the Institution, questioning the seniority in the appointment of the post of principal and case is pending and not disposed.

2. Prof. Lokesh.H.D, Faculty, Department of computer Science was terminated from his service on the grounds of ineligibility. He filed a case against the Institution which is pending before the court.

3. Smt. Bharathi.H.M has filed a case in the court for seeking UGC pay scales. Case is pending before the court.

6.2.11. Does the Institution have a mechanism for analyzing student feedback on institutional performance? If ‘yes’, what was the outcome and response of the institution to such an effort?

The college has a mechanism for analyzing student feedback on the institutional performance. Each year students are given an opportunity to provide feedback on various aspects of the college functioning such as the college, the course, the faculty, departments, non-teaching staffs, library facilities and other infrastructural facilities based on questionnaires’ provided.

The suggestions for improvement are grouped as below:

 Those can change immediately

 Those cannot change immediately and must wait until the next time the course is offered

 Those cannot change

In all possible cases, remedy is provided, after discussions with the concerned authorities.
