I know this can feel hopeless, but the truth is that we can train ourselves to engage differently with patients. In fact, shared decision-making and patient-centered care— elements of trauma-informed care—have been found to be particularly effective with patients marginalized on the basis of race and SES, perhaps because these patients are traditionally particularly disempowered (Durand et al., 2014). So, TIC is a tool to reduce health disparities.
