Performance degradation on local console

Themostlikelyreasonforperformance degradationisthatthecommunication portisnotrunninga bufferedUART(UniversalAsynchronousReceive/Transmit serialportchip).

IftheoperatingsystemisWindows98,youcan:

1. GointotheAdvancedsettingsforthecomm portandverifythecheckmarkis checkedtousea bufferedUART,butitwillmostlikelybechecked.Makesure theReceiveBuffersettingisnotsettotheright-mostsetting.

2. Uncheckthecheckbox.

3. RestartthePC.

4. Gobackinto theAdvancedsettingsand rechecktheoption.

5. RestartthePCagain.

Ifthatdoesnothelpand yoususpectthatthereisapossibilitythatthePCmay truly nothavethebufferedUART,IBMrecommends thatyouslowtheconnection downbetweenthePCand server.Dependingontheoperatingsystem, youmay havetochangetheregistry, theDUNobject, orthephonebookentry, orall three.

The problemwhentheUARTisnotbuffered isthatthehighspeedchokesthe UARTwith data, whichcausesa missedpacket ofdataresultingina30-second retry.Thiscanoccurrandomly, butwillbe persistent.Theslower speedreduces theexposuretoan overrunofdataandthereforenomore30-secondretries.

Unable to make a connection when infrared devices are installed

IfthePChavingconnectionproblemshasinfrareddevices,theywillneedtobe disabled insomecases.Mostofthesedevices workfromCOM1butfailto show upasusingtheassociatedhardwareresources.Some experimentationmayneedto be performedtoisolatetheproblemduringconfigurationofOperationsConsole.

Unexpected disconnections

IfthePC, localorremoteconsole, orboth, havepowermanagementcapabilities,it shouldhavethisfunction disabled.MostPCs,andespecially laptops, reset the communicationsports wheninvokingpowermanagementafter thespecifiedtime.

Thiswouldpotentiallydisconnecttheestablished connection. Therefore,a local consolethatgoesintopowersavermodemightdisconnecttotheserverand disconnectanactiveremote console.

Use HyperTerminal to validate connectivity between client and the server

HyperTerminalisaWindows applicationusedforconnectingtovarioussources and issupplied byall Windowsoperatingsystemsontheinstall media, though maynotbe automaticallyinstalled.Whenthelocalconsoledirectlyattached tothe serverdoesnotconnect, youcanuseHyperTerminaltodetermineifthePChas connectivity totheserver.
