My Essence

I h a v e lo n g w o n d e r e d i f l a m a so u l, u n b o u n d e d b y m y p h y sic a l bod y, o r if l a m a little c o n s c io u s n e s s b e lo n g in g to a b o d y, w h ic h is in u s e o f a n d m a n ip u la te d b y a so u l u n k n o w n to me. It is c le a r n o w that I a m a so ul. I f I w e re the b od y, I w o u ld no t b e able to haue astral p rojection s.

O n e m ight a r g u e that the b o d y - b o u n d e d c o n s c io u s n e s s c o u ld project (pe rhap s with the h e lp o f the so ul), b u t w h a t w o u l d b e the p u r p o s e o f s u c h a b ility ? It d o e s not make s e n se that a b o d y - b o u n d e d c o n s c io u s n e s s c a n project, b e c a u s e it d ie s with the body. If it d id n o t d ie w ith the b o d y , it w o u l d n o t b e b o u n d e d b y the b o d y in the first place, a n d that m a k e s it a so ul.

It is m o re likely that it is the s o u l that projects, a n d s in c e I a m the o n e projecting, I am that soul. T h e p r o je c tio n s p r o v e that I, the so ul, am a b le to su rv iv e w ithout a body. Therefore, I w ill s u r v iv e p h y s ic a l d eath. P hew , w h a t a relief.

T h e r e a r e a n in c o n c e iv a b le n u m b e r o f w ays to m o ld a s tr a l e n e rg y . If you h a p p e n to m e e t o t h e r b e in g s living in th e u n iv e rs e , you m ig h t find t h a t th e y lo o k a t t h e i r s u rr o u n d in g s in r a d ic a lly d iff e re n t w ays. T h ey do n o t s h a re o u r b e lie fs a b o u t h o w a w o rld sh o u ld look. T h ey hav e th e ir own beliefs a n d so m o ld n o n p h y sic a l e n e rg y to fit th o s e b e lie fs. M a tte r proves to be only on e o f m any ways of looking at. o r conceiv­ ing o f n onphysical energy. T h e only th in g th a t m ak es th is p e rc e p tio n of energ y special is th a t we as physical b ein g s (th e te r m we u se) have devel­ oped se n se s—eyes, e a rs , a n d so on —to a s sis t it. As w e have th e m ea n s to p erceiv e e n e rg y in th e p a rtic u la r w ay o f t h e p hysical, w e have m ad e th a t p e rc e p tio n o u r reality. H ad w e d e v e lo p e d s e n se s to m e a s u re e n erg y in so m e o th e r way, th e n th a t way w ould b e th o u g h t o f a s reality. R eality is in th e eye o f th e b e h o ld e r. Give th e b e h o ld e r a n a s tr a l eye a n d h e will a c ce p t th e a s tra l a s a re a lity to o .
