(30) PhD Thesis. Section D. A.S.A. Ahmed (Abu Sharib). Figure 8. (a) The matrix foliation in this sample is sub-vertical and strikes N–S and varies from steep to gently SW pitching in this vertical slide striking at 30° as it wraps around the cordierite and andalusite porphyroblasts in the centre. This low angle to the matrix foliation section orientation was chosen because it shows every phase of porphyroblast growth. The cordierite porphyroblast in centre contains very fine-grained inclusions and formed first. Within the right side of the andalusite (AND1) is a staurolite porphyroblast (ST1), the left inclusion rich portion of which predates the andalusite. Both grew prior to the matrix foliation SN-S which wraps around both them and the cordierite. A second generation of staurolite St2 overgrew this foliation. A second generation andalusite (AND2) partially replaces the St2 staurolite (top right). (b) Cordierite porphyroblast locally surrounded by second generation staurolite that overgrew the N–S-striking matrix foliation that also wraps around a first generation andalusite porphyroblast.Vertical thin section with single barbed arrow showing strike and way up.
