Abstract

A model to explain persistence among regular gamblers was proposed which suggested that arousal experienced during gambling elicits an illusion of control leading to overestimation of the probab

ility of winning. It was suggested that a prior disturbed mood could retard the habituation of such arousal and thus expose the gambler to an illusion of control for longer periods. Habitual experience of this phenomenon could account for persistence in the face of repeated losses

in regular gamblers. Following the collection of baseline data on mood, arousal and estimates of personal success, each subject was required to play in a club with a minimum of $4 (40 responses on a 10c machine). Subjects were then given the choice of continuing to play with their

winnings and a further $2 or stopping and taking the $2 plus any winnings. Self report measures of arousal and estimates of success were obtained every 20 responses during the gambling session. Responses and wins were recorded throughout the session.

Over 80% of both groups reported betting on six or more races, staying on the premises for two or more hours and repeating this pattern on as many days as possible through each week (Dickerson, 197*0- Roulette players falling into the heavy gambling category play several hours each night (Oldman, 197*0- High frequency and compulsive gamblers may spend between 15 and 30 hours per week gambling and this pattern may be

197*0-12. Money Spent on Gambling

The size of debts reported by compulsive gamblers at the time of seeking help has been reported to range from $100 to $35,000 in Australia (B1aszczynski, et al., 1982). Overseas figures range from £350 to an average high of £1,200 for Gamblers Anonymous members in

Scotland (Brown, 1973) and from $15,000 to $80,000 among U.S.A. clients of a University Compulsive Gambling Counselling Centre (Politzer and Morrow, 1980).

There are no data on the size of debts which regular gamblers generally incur but Dickerson (197*0 found that 56% of high frequency off-course betters reported having gambling debts. Oldman (1978) observed that regular customers at the casino where he worked as a croupier lost an average of <35 per week. Taking into account the occasional windfall there would have to be weeks when losses totalled <350. Most people would experience financial problems under such con ditions. Oldman concluded that the only difference between high frequency gamblers and compulsive gamblers was the greater vulnerability of the
