The
purpose
ofmy
thesis
is
to
coordinatethe
develop
ment
of
aDesign
Seminar
for local
governmental administrators.
This
programis
based
uponinformation
from
the
Federal
Design
Congress.
The
thesis
coordinated all activitiesfor
the
Rochester
Seminar
Day.
Initially,
I
met withthe
planning
committee
to
participatein
outlining
all aspects ofthe
presentation.
The
focus
of
my
thesis
work wasthe
designing
and production of all promotional materials.
The
graphicimages
were createdby
means
ofdesign
systems.Produc
tions
of
the
work encompassedthe
technical
application ofsilk screen
printing,
offsetlithography
printing,
RESEARCH
The
Design
Seminar
is
based
onthe
initiation
ofthe
First
Federal Design
Assembly
(illustration
#1,
2,
3).
This
assembly
wasdirected
by
Federal
Administrators,
withthe
intent
ofbeing
abeginning
avehicle
for
promoting
the
need
for
planning
by design,
ofthe
community,
by
the
community,
andfor
the
community.
The
First
Federal
Design
Assembly,
"The
Design Necessi
ty."was
sponsoredby
the
Federal
Council
onthe
Arts
andHumanities
under
a grantfrom
the
National
Endowment
for
the
Arts.
The
seminar onApril
2,
1973
wasdirected
by
the
Federal
Government
to
illustrate
specific pointsin
the
development
ofdesign
necessity.Discussed
atthe
assembly
wasthe
necessity
ofdesign
to
servehuman
needs.
As
human
needshave
become
more complex,
design necessity has become
moreintense.
Design
represents
the
development
of man andhis
interaction
withsociety,
civilization and environment.Design
supportsthe
philosophy
that
form follows
function.
As
ourciviliza
tion has
become
more
technically
advanced,
at an everincreasing
rate,
the
complexity
andinteraction
ofman's
needs
depend
on astrong
design
necessity.Design
provides man with an affective msans of organization anddirection.
Today,
non-design canonly
resultin
hindering
man's
achieveThe
Federal
programemphasized
the
necessity
ofdesign
in four
major
categories;
visual
communications,
interiors
and
industrial
design,
architecture,
andlandscape
environment.
Tulsa,
Oklahoma
andRochester,
New York
have
been
the
first
cities
to
respond
to
the
Federal
program.Arts
Coun
cils
of
six statesColorado,
Maryland,
Minnesota,
Ohio,
Virginia
andWashington
have
also signaledtheir
interest

Design
Seminar
for
the
Rochester community
reaffirmsthe

Federal
Design Assembly:

THE THESIS
Designing
promotional
materials,
to
communicatethe
need
for
design,
has
been my
specificthesis
objective.
I
have
sought notonly
to
communicatethe
needbut
to
createa
cohesive
visual
identity
for
the
program.In
conjunction,
I
was
responsible
for
the
coordination andplanning
ofthe
seminar program.
DESIGN
CONCEPTS
Concept
In
establishing
anoverall
identity
for the
Design
Seminar,
I fetrived
for
a simpledistinctive
and creativeimage.
Each
proportional
piecerepeats
the
seminaridentity
logotype
"design",
used
in
several
applicationsby
organizational
grid
systems.
The
word "design"is
modified
to
become
agraphic
image
andis
compositionally
placedin
aproportional
organization
of
space.Imagery
Initially
I
explored severaldifferent
type
stylesto
find
whichcombination
ofletter
characters
best
lent
themselves
to
the
word"design".
Based
onmy
experience as adesigner,
I
felt
that
the
structure of a sans serif
type
face,
because
ofIts
simplicity
andboldness,
providedthe
mostgraphic
potentialfor
solving
this
problem.Using
the
Staromat,
aphototype
setter,
I
couldbest
explore
severaltype
faces
and make slightmodifications
onletter
combinations.
Due
to
several availabletype
faces,
I
concerned myself withthe
relationship
ofthe
word"design"
to
the
other
type
(body
copy)
which wouldbe
used
In
each promotional piece.
I
selectedHelvetica
(a
contemporary
type
face)
to
be
the
secondary
type
style.Handel
to
be
used
for
the
logotype
design.
Experimenting
withletter
forms,
the
best
results
evolved
whenthe
two
letters
E
andS
were modifiedinto
one
form.
The
remaining
letters
weredesigned
to
appearto
touch
eachother
(known
asfill)
whenin
fact
they
do
not
(illustration #4).

stimulate
the
prospective
governmental
officials
the
descriptional
phrase
was
carefully
worded andconstruc
ted.
Upon
approval,
the
final
phrase
read,
design
for
a greater
Rochester
community
a
seminar
for
the
betterment
of our
environment
through
the
application
of
design.
Special
visual
attention was givento
the
relation
ship
ofthe
word "design"to
its
accompanying
phrase.With
the
planning
committee,
afour
part promotionalprogram was outlined
to
inform
the
Rochester
governmental
officials
aboutthe
Design
Seminar.
The
first
contact
was
made
on
anindividual
basis
by
telephone.
Each
official
then
received
aprinted
letter
(illustration #8).
The
letterhead
andenvelope
graphicsbecame
the
first
visual
exposure
to
the
programidentity.
The
graphics
for the
Design Seminar
letterhead
wasconceived
on amodular
grid,
based
on a unit grid(illustra
tion
5).
To
further
unify
the
identity
ofthe
Design
Seminar
the
colors
red,
black
and white were repeatedthroughout.
The
letterhead
and envelope were reproducedby
the
offset
lithography
printing

the
screenprinting
process

While
designing
the
poster,
I
concerned myself withthe
technical printing
problems.I
decided
to
screenfront
and
back
sidestogether
andthen
flip
the
stock afterthe
first
side wasdry,
then repeating the
printing
process.This
wasnot
only
time
saving
but
it
prevented screenplugging
and cleanup
time.

seminar
participants,

With
the
program
identity
wellestablished,
a more creative application
of
the
logotype
wasintroduced

encountered
technical
problems
in
the
reproduction
of
the
name
tags.
The
first
attempt
atscreen
printing
was
unsuccessful
because
I
had
attempted
to
use
a12xx
screen which
did
not
allow
for
reproducing
the
fine
detail
necessary.
I
then
rephotographed
the
ortho
negatives
atF
22/35
seconds
for
sharperdetail
(previously
using
F 16/20
seconds).
In
the
silkscreening,
I
used
afiner
1
6xx
silkscreen.
While
redoing
the
tags
I
discovered
abetter
solution
for
anadhesive
backing.
Originally
I
wasgoing
to
use
plastic
containers
with attachedpin,
name
tag
enclosed.Instead
I
used
a self-adhering
label
whichwas
attachedto
the
tag
with aspray
adhesive;
whenready
to
use
the
whitelabel
was peeled off.The
final
promotional piece wasthe
seminarcover.
This
cover was givento
each seminar participant and contained
an assortment of printed piecesincluding
the
Design
Seminar
letterhead,
anote
pad,
the
pamphlet,
Urbanarium
Newsletters,
aCommunication
Design
poster,
a promotionalbooklet
producedby
the
Federal
Design
Assembly,
and assortedFederal
Design
materials.This
booklet
wasreproduced
by
the
screenprinting
process.It
was
printedon
black
stock,
with
the
design
elementbeing
another application ofthe
basic
imagery
(white,
withbottom line
red).
This
design
was
based
on a grid system andit
is
amathematical
progres
sion
using
three
columns
(illustration
#12).

CONCLUSION
In
developing
the
Design Seminar
my
growth as adesigner
was notlimited
to
the
problemsolving
ofthe
promotional
work.Professionally,
I
was giventhe
opportunity
to
workunder
a studio situation.The
Planning
Committee
represented
the
clientseeking
the
services ofa
designer.
Initially,
we workedtogether planning the
campaign.
As
the
artdirector,
I
createdthe
image
ofthe
program.As
adesigner,
I
executedthe
piecesto
be
printed.
As
the
technician,
I
supervised andin
somecases
produced allthe
finished
promotional material.The
concept ofthe
design
necessity has
enlightenedmy
philosophy
as adesigner.
My
workhas
a new personalsignificance
in
its
relationship
to
contemporary
society.This
opportunity
enabled meto
seehow designers
canbe
utilized
in
communicating
human
needs
more accurately.Hopefully
this
program will not end withthis
presentation
but
instead
generate a new awarenessfor
its
continuation.
