DATA ACQUISITION PROJECTS
October 2021
Ashley Summers, Information Systems Manager
AGENDA
• High-level timeline
• Status updates for
• Imagery 2022
• Lidar 2020
• Planimetric Data 2020
• Land Cover 2020
• Program-level update
TIMELINE
IMAGERY 2022
IMAGERY 2022
We have two offerings for imagery in 2022
• A custom flight similar to collections from
2002-2020
• A supplemental Nearmap imagery subscription (metro area only)
?
IMAGERY 2022 – CUSTOM FLIGHT
What’s the same?
• approximately 6,000 square miles of collection
• four-band orthoimagery
• snow-free and leaf-off flight timing
• meets American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing positional accuracy standards for mapping and geographic
information systems work
• independent quality control provided by partners and volunteers
• Vendor is The Sanborn Map Company (since 2016)
IMAGERY 2022 – CUSTOM FLIGHT
What’s new?
• Additional ground control (check points) for our independent verification of positional accuracy.
• A true-ortho process in areas historically affected by building lean errors
• No historical imagery services
• Web Mercator as a new projection option (if there is enough interest)
IMAGERY 2022 – CUSTOM FLIGHT
• Why might you want Web Mercator?
• 79% of partners that responded to a survey last spring said they need the imagery to work well in ArcGIS Online (AGOL)
• ESRI suggests using Web Mercator in AGOL to speed up performance, but it is not required.
• What should you do next?
• Respond to the survey with your interest so I know if it’s worth the extra expense to add this option to the project.
NEXT STEPS FOR IMAGERY
• 11/17 - Seek approval from DRCOG’s Finance and Budget Committee to enter into contracts
• 11/30- Collect letters of intent (LOIs) from partners to
determine who is committed to funding – extended date for those still waiting on their own budget approvals
• 12/15 – Execute contracts with Sanborn and Nearmap
• 12/31 – Nearmap subscription starts
• 2/15 – Sanborn flight window opens for Areas 1, 1a, 2
LIDAR 2020
LIDAR SPECIFICATIONS
Approximately 5,000 square miles of lidar proposed for collection.
Deliverables, captured according to U.S.
Geological Survey Lidar Base Specifications:
• classified lidar point cloud: quality level 2 and quality level 1
• bare-earth digital elevation model
• first return intensity raster
• breaklines
• Federal Geographic Data Committee metadata
• 1-foot and 2-foot machine-generated contours add-on
CONTOUR SPECIFICATIONS
Partners spent several months determining
contour methodology.
• Sample 1 – too messy
• Sample 2 – too smooth
• Sample 3 – too messy
• Sample 4 – just right

• For processing and quality control, the project area has been split up into 3 areas:
• QL2 East
• QL2 West
• QL1
SCHEDULE
• Why are we behind schedule?
• Infrastructure failure at Sanborn (~2.5 months delay)
• USGS received 3x more data to review than normal over the summer (~2.5 months delay)
• DRCOG’s prioritization request for QL2 East got lost in the shuffle for review but is Section Delivery of

QC EFFORT
• AGOL webmap and services
• Student volunteers from Front Range Community College
• Issue in Group 3:
• What if modified
change doesn’t show real change?
DELIVERY PLANS
• Partners receive incremental deliveries whenever an area is finalized.
• In April 2022, when all areas are finalized, a merged layer for each feature will be created and put on the Regional Data Catalog for public download.
LAND COVER 2020
PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS
• 1-meter resolution land cover for the 10-county region (same extent as custom imagery)
• 9-classes including:
1. Structures
2. Impervious surfaces 3. Water
4. Grassland/prairie 5. Shrubland/scrubland 6. Tree canopy
SCHEDULE
• Sanborn/UVM are finding that the 2020 planimetric data is very valuable for creating the land cover data so they want to align the land cover
delivery schedule with the planimetric delivery schedule.
• The original schedule (shown below) is being reworked with roughly the same deadlines, but different areas delivered.
