1 Introduction
• Human Beings lead a complex life. They have different aspects/dimesions to their behavior/life. A Jyotishaa should be able to understand and address them!
• Divisional charts are the keys to understanding horoscopes as they unlock that hidden door which refuses to open, even after the astrologer has examined the entire spectrum of variables for analyzing a bhava.
• Kalyana Varma has said that without divisional charts, one cannot take a step forward in astrology. It illuminates a bhava where darkness prevails and enables the astrologer to examine bhava specific queries in its minutest detail.
• The term Varga means Division and refers to the various divisions of a sign, based on which Divisional Charts/Varga Chakra (or simply D-Charts) is constructed.
• Calculations given in standard classics like BPHS1 & Sarvartha Chintamani2.
• Parasara prescribes 16 D-Charts. Jaimini3 adds few more in his book – Upadesa Sutras.
• Each division in a D-Chart spans certain length. They are as follows:
» 3 degrees in Dasamsa
» 3 degrees 20 minutes in Navamsa
» 7 degrees 30 minutes in Saptamsa and so on ...
» Rasi is a special case of D-Chart with length of 30 degrees.
• The Rasi chart is the body of the native and shows how he shall view this world and shall react to the various inputs from the environment. Other divisional charts as like a microscopic magnification of one of the aspects dealt with one specific house (at least) in the Rasi Chart. For example, the Dasamsa (D-10 Chart) shows the working environment of the individual and his career. In the Rasi Chart, the same is examined from the tenth house. Thus, the tenth house in the Rasi chart has expanded into another complete chart making the examination of events easier. Such a simultaneous examination of the Rasi Chart and any individual D-Chart is called the microscopic examination and essentially reveals hidden attributes and ways in which the native shall react to the inputs coming from the specific environment.
• The Divisional charts are independent aspects of the environment and hence, can be examined independent of the 1
BPHS: Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra authored by Maharishi Parasara. Translations by GC Sharma & Santhanam available.
2
Rasi Chart as well. Such an independent examination reveals details of how the matters concerned exist, influence and change with time. It shows the changes in the environment itself. Whether a person is on leave or holiday, his office may continue to function and people may continue to do the things the do. Various changes like new regulations, orders, colleagues joining and leaving continue. These changes may affect the native directly or indirectly and the Dasamsa shall reveal all these changes.
• D-Charts are one of the most important tools in the birth-rectification process!
3
2 Harmonics
• The twelve signs therefore are divided and sub-divided in different fractions, the sequence of which gets repeated after every twelve signs.
• Each cycle of twelve divisions therefore represent a ‘harmonic’ depicting the various levels of consciousness, both gross and subtle, that exists in the life of a person.
• The first cycle of divisional charts from D-1 to D-12 represent the physical plane. They cover the various aspects of the physical realities of a person such as the body itself (D-1, rashi), wealth (D-2, Hora), co-borns or siblings (D-3, Drekkana), properties and fortune (D-4, Chaturthamsa), progeny (D-7, Saptamsa), spouse (D-9, Navamsa), profession, career and work 10, Dasamsa) and parents (D-12, Dwadasamsa). Of these, the Rashi (D-1), Drekkana (D-3) and Navamsa (D-9) are considered to be the most important in analyzing a horoscope.
• The next cycle is the first harmonic of the previous cycle, covering divisions from D-13 to D-24. This represents the conscious plane, depicting the various existential conditions of a person. Although technically 12 divisions are possible in each cycle, Parasara’s format of shodasavarga or the 16 kinds of divisions of each sign is being followed here. In this format,
the three divisions of Kalamsa (D-16), Vimsamsa (D-20) and Chaturvimsamsa or Siddhamsa (D-24) are generally used, as the primary divisions to be studied in this cycle. Kalamsa is the first harmonic of the Chaturthamsa showing luxuries, vehicles and mental happiness. Vimsamsa deals with the spiritual life of a person while Chaturvimsamsa deals with higher learning. This cycle therefore refers to the higher existential activities of a person after crossing the first rung of gross material conditions.
• The third cycle or the second harmonic, covering 25 to D-36, relates to the sub-conscious plain. These explore the factors, which lie in the sub-conscious region and unconsciously influence the mind. They represent inherent weaknesses and strengths (D-27, Nakshatramsa) and all forms of evils that might besiege a person (D-30, Trimsamsa).
• The fourth cycle or third harmonic ranging from D-37 to D-48 deals with past karma, which is inherited as ancestral legacy. The important divisions in this cycle are D-40 or Khavedamsa representing matrilineal legacy and D-45 or Akshavedamsa representing patrilineal legacy. This is the super-conscious plane.
• The final harmonic is that of the supra-conscious plane from D-49 to D-60. This shows the accumulated karma from past births, which a person carries with him like a legacy. In this context Shastyamsa or D-60 is the most relevant division.

8 Interpretation
• Each D-Chart can/should be treated and studied
independently!
• Each house stands for different things, so how do we distinguish?
• Hint: Parasara first talks about Nature of Rasis & Planets, then defines D-Charts (explains them) and then gives the Results of various houses! For example: in D-12, 4th house denotes mother. In D-16, 4th house denotes vehicles and luxuries. In D-4, it denotes residence. In D-9, it denotes domestic harmony (with spouse). In Rasi chart, it denotes heart etc. In D-24, it denotes Formal Education ... and so on.
• Use each divisional chart to analyze only matters related to the significations of the D-Chart.
• Karya Rasi is the house, which is the center of focus of the activity related to a Divisional chart. A D-chart may have many important houses like a Dasamsa where the sixth house is examined for service related matters or the seventh house is examined for business, but the focus is the tenth house and for the Dasamsa, the tenth house is the Karya Rasi. The Lord of the Karya Rasi in the Rasi Chart should be well placed in
the concerned divisional chart for the activity (Karya) to prosper.
• Karyesh is the significator of the Karya (activity) and will vary from one chart to another depending on the activity involved. For example, in the Dasamsa (profession) a person can have many Karyesh depending on the activities he is involved in. As an example let us consider President Bill Clinton. He is a politician and also a lawyer. The Karyesh for politics is the Sun (note - Moon is for Bureaucracy) and that for a legal profession is Jupiter. Depending on the placement and strength of these planets in the Dasamsa, the rise or fall or changes in career can be studied and predicted. The concept of Argala is vital to determine as to which of these Karyesh shall bloom or perish at any point of time as the dasa’s change.
• Karaka means significator and are classified into the three categories of Naisargika, Chara and Sthira karaka. Details about Karaka and other basic principles like Rasi & Graha drishti, Argala etc, can be learnt from any standard book.
• The placement of Yoga associated with the Atmakaraka in any divisional chart shows the internal desires of the soul or the real inner desires of the individual. It shows the objective which is not visible whereas the Lagna shows the visible and known objectives.
• The lord of the concerned house in Rasi chart should be well placed in the divisional chart. For example, the 10th lord of Rasi chart, if exalted or in strength in Dasamsa or D10 promises high career achievement or if the 5th lord in Rasi is ill-placed in Saptamsa, it can be herald problems pertaining to children.
• Independant Planetary Dignity: The dignity of a planet like placement in exalted, own, friendly or debilitated sign in the D-chart has an independent say in the affairs related to the concerned chart. Say a planet is exalted in a quadrant in the Rasi chart and debilitated in a Dusthana7 in the Siddhamsa and say that the dasa of the said planet were to function in childhood. Then we would one naughty child in our hands who would have excellent health, running around all the time and refusing to study (Siddhamsa the D-24 chart shows the education environment and its impact).
7
• MahaDasa (MD) shows the overall pattern, the AntaraDasa (AD) sets a specific trend and Pratyantara Dasa (PD) (and other lower-level sub-dasas) zooms in on the event.
• Important Note: If you are analyzing Foreign travel which happens on a particular date, don’t expect MahaDasa to show it up clearly! The AntaraDasa will be connected to the event, while Pratyantara Dasa will clearly reveal the event. However, if the native did preparation for his travel and this event was in his mind then the Antara Dasa should also clearly indicate it.
9 Examples
9.1 Case Study #1: Foreign Residence
Native moved to a Foreign Country on Aug 12th 2002.
Figure 1: Foreign Residence - D1
Explanation:
Foreign travel entails physical moving of the body and hence D-1 plays an important role. Please refer to the table above, Foreign travel is indicated by 7th, 8th, 9th, 12th or baadhaka house/lords.
The event happened in Venus-Sun.
Here, Venus is in the 8H and Sun is in the 9th and the 9th lord too. It is further conjoined with 12th lord Mars and Baadhaka lord Mercury. Hence Sun the PD lord is very strongly connected. PD of Sun ran from Dec 01 – Dec 02. All this time he was contemplating moving abroad!
The other D-Chart used is the ChaturthAmsa or D-4 as it indicates Residence & Property! Observe this chart carefully and you will find that Venus is the 8th lord and Sun is in the 9th house with Ketu. Nodes are also the significators of Foreign Travel!
9.2 Case Study #2: Death
Native died (assasinated) on May 21st 1991.
Figure 3: Death - D1
Explanation:
Death is a physical phenomenon and should be seen in D1. Rahu is the 7th lord and afflicting 12H. Mercury is the 2nd lord and Mars is in the 2nd house. All 3 clearly point to death. The native of this chart was assasinated by his own bodyguards!
D11 is the chart for Death & Destruction. Here Rahu is the baadhakesh in baadhakasthana. Mercury is in Maraka-Sthana in the 7th house and Mars is in 8H afflicting it. Usually malefics in 8th curtails longevity ... excepting Saturn.
9.3 Case Study #3: Profession
Service & Business.
Figure 5: Profession - D10
Explanation:
Profession/Occupation should be seen from D10 also known as Dasamsa. It provides a microscopic view of 10H and gives detailed information about ones actions in society, profession & achievements.
Normally, Profession is a means of earning and hence 2nd House which signfies Wealth plays an important role. Now, trines to any house promotes the prosperity of that house. Hence, the 6th and 10th is also considered to delineate out vocation.
Here 2nd house is empty, 6th has Moon & Ketu aspected by its lord Sun and 10th has Mercury. Further, 10th lord is in 5H with 8th lord Venus.
So what do we make of all this? Let us proceed step-by-step. In D10, 6th house shows service and 7th shows business. Here, we have planets in both. So we can conclude that native will do service and also run a business.
For Service, we should give emphasis on 6th house and its lord. Here we have Moon & Ketu aspected by 6th lord Sun. Sun shows government service. Moon shows beuracrats. Hence, the native was working for the government in the capacity of a beuracrat. Ketu’s presence indicates Secret Service/Defense ... and ... indeed he was working in the Defense Dept.
But, also notice 6th lord is debilitated and hence he wouldnt persist with service and eventually go into business.
Mercury is the lord of 7th house and Mars is placed therein. Mercury & Mars shows many possibilities and one of them is printing business. He started a magazine publication and still pursues it.
Lagna and 10th lord Jupiter is in 5th house with 8th lord, both these are occult houses. The native is an awesome Astrologer. Note Jupiter is exalted! Mercury & Jupiter’s influence has also made the native an excellent author.
Thus, we analyze the Dasamsa, taking the relevant houses and noting the influence of planets and then finally clueing in on the actual profession.
Readers may refer to the book “Crux of Vedic Astrology by Pt. Sanjay Rath” for more detailed information on Planets and Profession.
9.4 Case Study #4: Education & Learning
Higher Education.
Figure 6: Higher Education - D24
Explantion:
As given in the table earlier, Bachelors education is shown by 9H/L and Masters education by 2H/L. D24 also known as ChaturVimsamsa is the division used for analyzing Education & Learning.
9H is Scorpio and it has 2 lords Mars & Ketu. Mars is debilitated in Cancer with Saturn (The debilitation here is interesting, but let’s not comment on it!).
Malefics shows technical subjects and benefics shows a non-technical field of study.
Mars & Saturn shows subjects like Mechanical & Production Engineering and true enough he did his Production Engineering.
For Masters Education we look at 2 house and its lord. 2H has Mercury, which shows Computer Science. The native came to US and did his Masters Degree in Computer Science.
9.5 Case Study #5: Spiritual Career
Spirituality associated with Career.
Figure 7: Spirituality associated with Career - D10
Explanation:
Jupiter is the signifcator of God/Teacher/Mantra Initiation and Ketu for Moksha/Emanicipation/Spirtualism. Further 9H shows Dharma and 12H shows ending of the ego as it is 12th (Loss) to the 1st(Ego).
In the native’s chart, Lagna Lord and 10L Mercury is in 12H in Dasamsa or D10, with Jupiter(God) and Ketu(Moksha) in Leo ruled by Sun(Dharma). Native was a Spiritualist, Teacher and initiated thousands of disciples into Vishnu Bhakti(Jupiter)d.
During Mercury Dasa which ran from 1954–1971, the native authored Srimad Bhagavatam and translated numerous epics. Note: Mercury is also the significator of Writing and is conjunct 3rd lord(Writing/Communication) Ketu.
In 1959 he renounced life and became a Sanyasa. Observe how Lagna lord in 12H during its dasa gave renunciation. This happened in AD of Venus, who is in 9th house of Dharma and with Saturn the mendicant/renunciate. Dasamsa is one of the charts to use as it pertains to actions in society!
In July 1966 he established a religious organization in the US with branches in many foreign countries which is now famous world-wide. This happened in AD of Jupiter. Jupiter is significator of Religious Orders.
The chart belongs to none other than Srila Prabhupada who started the ISKCON organization!
9.6 Case Study #6: Marriage
Married on Aug 29 1991.
Figure 8: Marriage - D9
Explanation:
For Marriage and Relationship, D9 or Navamsa is the chart to be considered. The key house being Navamsa Lagna and 7th house.
Native got married in Venus-Venus. Venus, not only is on the D9 Lagna, but is also the lord of it.
9.7 Case Study #7: Progeny
Sex of the Kids(2).
Figure 9: Progeny - D7
Explanations:
Saptamsa or D7 is the chart to consider when we want to analyze, the possibility of having kids, their numbers, their happiness, progress and prosperity. The 5th house in a Male’s chart and the 9th house in Female’s chart are the controlling house for children. For all childbirth, the lord of the D7 Lagna holds the key.
Now, Lagna is Saggitarius in the native’s D7. This is an Odd-Sign, hence reckoning of the houses will be done Zodiacally. [Note: If the Lagna in D7 happened to be in an Even-Sign, then reckoning of the houses will be done Anti-Zodiacally, in reverse.]
5th house is Aries, its lord is Mars, which is posited in Gemini which is a Female8 Sign. It is conjunct Moon & Ketu both are Feminine-Planets9. Hence his first off-spring was a Girl.
For the next offspring, move 3H from the 5th house, i,e 7th House. This progression by 3H is called Manduka Gati.
7L is Mercury a Masculine-Planet10. It is posited in Scorpio a Female Sign. This actually shows the 2nd offspring as a daughter. But, note that Mercury in Scorpio has exchanged houses (Parivarthana) with Ketu in Gemini. This Parivarthana Yoga causes the indications to be reversed. Hence instead of being a Girl, it will be a Boy!!
Important Note:
Parivarthana Yoga’s are very tricky as they reverse the indications and has to be carefully observed in all D-Charts, otherwise our predictions will go haywire :). If the Parivarthana Yoga involves the Lagna lord, then all the indications has to be reversed.
8
Aries, Cancer, Leo, Libra, Saggitarius & Pisces are Male Signs. Taurus, Gemini, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn & Aquarius are Female Signs.
9
Feminine Planets are Moon, Venus, Ketu & Saturn. Saturn is actually an Eunuch, but gives female children. Note: Debilitated planets also indicate Female Children, irrespective of the planet getting debilitated.
10
Masculine Planets are Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Rahu & Mercury. Mercury is actually an Eunuch, but gives Male children. Note: Exalted planets also indicate Male Children
Exalted Planets indicate Male Children, irrespective of the planets getting exalted. Similarly, Debilitated Planets indicate Female Children, irrespective of planets getting debilitated!
9.8 Case Study #8: Siblings
Sex of the Siblings(2). 1 Elder & 1 Younger.
Figure 10: Sex of Siblings - D3
Explanation:
For studying and understanding the Happiness, Progress and Prosperity of Siblings, Drekkana or D3 is the chart to be considered. The 11H stands for Elder Sibling and 3H stands for Younger Sibling. For the next siblings, we progress using Manduka Gati i.e every 3H.
Note: If Lagna is in an Odd-Sign reckoning of houses should be done Zodiacally, and if it is in an Even-Sign, then reckoning of houses should be done in an Anti-Zodiacal manner.
Here, Lagna is in an Even-Sign. There is no parivarthana involving the Lagna lord, so we dont have to reverse any
indications :). Since it is an Even-Sign, reckoning of houses will have to be Anti-Zodiacal.
11H (Elder Sibling) is Scorpio (not Pisces!), and it has 2 lords, Mars & Ketu. Mars is with Moon a Feminine planet and Ketu is with Saturn a Feminine planet, hence this shows an Elder Sister.
Lets take 3H (Younger Sibling), which is Pisces and its lord Jupiter is placed alone in Gemini. Jupiter is a Masculine planet, but here the sign has more influence, hence Gemini being a Feminine Sign gives a Younger sister.
9.9 Case Study #9: Fathers Demise
Father passed away on May 27 1964.
Figure 11: Fathers Demise - D12
Explanation:
For analyzing the details of one’s Parents, D12 or Dwadasamsa should be considered. The 4th house/lord gives information on the natives Mother and the 9th house/lord throws light on the Father.
Note: In Dwadasamsa, while considering Parents Lagna, reckoning should be always in the Zodiacal direction.
This happened during Jupiter-Venus.
Here, 9H is Capricorn and its lord is in Pisces with Moon. This is her Father’s Lagna. From here, Jupiter the MD lord is in 8H in Libra. Note: Benefics in the 8th from its house is always bad.
The AD lord Venus is in 6H in MaranaSthana .Further, Venus is also the dispositor of MD lord Jupiter, adds fuel to the fire.
11
Marana Sthana: Specific most malefic positions of planets capable of causing death-like suffering are as follows: Sun in 12th house, Moon in 8th house, Mars in 7th house, Mercury in 7th house, Jupiter in 3rd house, Venus in 6th house, Saturn in 1st house and Rahu in 9th house. Planets in Marana Sthana will not do well for its signification and will surely destroy the house it owns.
