iPad Technology for Speech/language Pathologists

I. Primary Goals and Objectives:

Develop and implement differentiated instruction for students with Communication Disorders.

Improve purposeful listening and speaking skills for students with Communication Disorders

9 Speech-language pathologists will increase the use of iPad technology with students with Communication Disorders. Baseline data: 0%

3 iPads will be available for one month check-out by speech-language pathologists who are unfamiliar with the technology.

9 speech-language pathologists will participate in a monthly professional development group (30 minutes prior to the monthly Job-Alike meeting)

9 speech-language pathologists and targeted students will share technology with other SLPs and general education staff in 3 or more demonstrations.

II. Concern:

Students with Communication Disorders need a variety of strategies to increase and maintain corrected communication goals in the general education setting. Using iPad devices and apps provides differentiated instruction and is mobile to go into general education/SPED classrooms. Speech impaired students can learn to teach the device to general education/SPED teachers and classmates using a projector cable. The grant will provide opportunities for students to improve purposeful speaking and listening.

III. Learning Goal:

Speech-language pathologists will learn to use differentiated instruction to increase communication skills for students on individualized education programs. Students will increase purposeful listening and speaking skills.

IV. SMART goal format: Specific:

9 speech-language pathologists will learn how to use iPads and apps with their students who have Communication Disorders.

3 iPads will be used on a check-out system to allow other SLPs opportunities to try differentiated instruction for one month at a time.

9 SLPs will meet on a monthly basis and share planned interventions and supports using iPad technology.

Measurable:

Pre-post assessment tools will be used with SLP's to identify knowledge of iPad technology and use of targeted apps.

Pre-post data will identify implementation of differentiated instruction in therapy setting and general education/self-contained classroom settings.

Attainable:

By April 2013, 9 speech-language pathologists will demonstrate effective use of iPad technology in a variety of settings, kindergarten through age 21 programs.

Realistic:

The 9 speech-language pathologists in the grant have used iPod technology during the 2011-2012 school year. This target group will have the foundational skills to increase the use of iPad technology in the Salem-Keizer school district.

A Google site will be developed to help facilitate the use of collaboration and supports for using apps with a variety of students with Communication Disorders. Timely:

By September 2012, the SLPs will have completed baseline assessment for knowledge and use of iPad technology.

By October 2012, the grant leader will have trained 9 SLPs in iPad features and the purchased apps.

By January 2013, the SLPs will have purchased $52.00 of other apps for communication therapy.

By March 2013, the SLPs will have had 6 PD sessions to collaborate and learn about the diversity of iPad technology in a variety of educational settings.

By April 2013, the SLPs will have completed 3 or more demonstrations in general education/self-contained classrooms with speech impaired students.

By May 2013, SLPs will have completed the post assessment.

By May 2013, SLPs will have data on number of students using technology independently and number of classroom presentations.

V. Strategic Plan #5:

This grant will meet the following strategic plan:

Continue to develop and implement differentiated instruction for all students, including planned interventions and supports. Speech impaired students have benefited from the iPod technology introduced during the 2011-2012 school year. The iPad 2, 3rd generation technology grant will increase student achievement in the area of purposeful listening and speaking.

VI. Evaluation Plan:

The evaluation plan will consist of pre-post assessment of SLPs knowledge of iPad

technology, data on number of students using iPad apps, and data on number of classroom presentations completed during the 2012-2013 school year. Students currently do not have access to iPad technology for communication therapy. The apps and technology will increase purposeful listening and speaking for students in the Salem-Keizer school district. VII. Teacher/Staff Support:

iPad grants and technology have increased in classroom settings during the 2011-2012 school year. The district iUser group has created a support site (Edmoto) to share apps. The SLPs in this grant will be taught how to participate in Edmoto groups and collaborate with educators from other schools and disciplines.

VIII. Parent/Community Involvement:

The SLPs in the grant will provide information on the Google web page site. This site will be shared with staff and parents.

IX. Number of students to be actively involved in the grant:

The grant will target students in kindergarten through age 21 in the Salem-Keizer school district. Nine SLPs will teach 30 of the communication impaired students on their caseload to use features of iPad technology. The SLPs will each complete 3 classroom presentations to share with general education and/or special education classes.

SLP caseload: 9 x 30= 270

3 Classroom presentations per SLP (12-35 students per class): 324-945

Total students targeted in grant: 270 IEP speech impaired students/ approx. 324-945 other students, depending on SLPs sites/programs/classrooms.
