Professional experience
placements
The School of Education and Professional Studies
provides students with quality on-the-job
supervised teaching experiences—called
professional experience placements—within
early childhood settings and primary and
secondary schools.
While many of our students are placed in local schools, some have chosen to have their professional experience placements in rural, remote and culturally diverse locations within Australia and overseas including:
• Waikiki Elementary School, Honolulu, which, in addition to Hawaii State Performance Standards, follows a mindful philosophy to prepare students as effective problem solvers both inside and outside the classroom
• Green School, Bali, Indonesia, which pioneers sustainability within education with its environmentally sensitive construction, and instils sustainable habits in its students through a curriculum that combines academic and experiential learning with a creative arts curriculum
• Singapore International School, which offers an international program that combines a Singapore academic curriculum with elements of the Queensland Studies Authority’s curriculum • Ocean of Light International School, Tonga, which is dedicated
to developing the spiritual, intellectual, and physical potential of its students through an international curriculum from Cambridge University, and is founded on the Baha’i Faith and its teachings of ‘unity in diversity’
• Normanton State School, a small cattle town located in a remote community just south of the Gulf of Carpentaria in Far North Queensland.
These professional experience placements give you an opportunity to:
• appreciate diverse communities
• make informed decisions about future employment options • challenge preconceived ideas about what it’s like working
and living in rural, remote and international locations • enhance your employment prospects with access to school,

For Caitlin Low, traveling to Cambodia with classmates for part of her studies was an incredible experience. ‘We learned so much about ourselves and about the different culture and history while volunteering in a medical centre, school and orphanage. It was an unforgettable experience and I can’t wait for the next adventure!’
Secondary education student Daniel Robertson packed a lot into his first two years of study with a semester exchange to Canada and a three-week cultural exchange to South Korea. ‘Doing an exchange was the best thing I did during my degree! I now have good friends from around the world and a huge array of wonderful experiences that put me in good stead for future opportunities,’ he said.
Chelsea Riewoldt says participating in the exchange program at the Copenhagen Business School in Denmark was the most fulfilling and exciting semester of her studies. ‘Exchange allowed me to build life-long friendships, develop global connections and experience an entirely new culture. Since returning from exchange I have become more independent, inter-culturally competent and I’ve improved my understanding and awareness of other cultures. I would highly recommend exchange and Copenhagen Business School to any students who want to embark on a life- changing semester, which they will never forget.’
