The Importance of Global Communications

Growing interconnectedness of the world nowadays has resulted

in an ever-increasing need for global communication.

World Migration

There are countless reasons for people to need

global communication, which include, but are

not limited to:

Business Partners, Family and Friends,

Transnational Corporations.

The number of migrants around the world is

rising every year. A United Nations report

points out that in the past decade,

“the global migrant stock grew twice as fast than during the

previous decade.”

The need for a cost-efficient and reliable way

to communicate and connect with the world

will rise exponentially.

The challenge is to deliver reasonably-priced

services with a reach that is truly global and

does not apply to just selected countries.

The Evolution of Long Distance Communication

Word of Mouth

Communication by word of mouth was one of the greatest advances achieved by mankind. The ability to communicate verbally and linguistically drastically improved the efficiency with which humans worked and allowed for the transmission of complex ideas of almost any description to be conveyed by one person to another.

Smoke signals are one of the earliest forms of visual

communication invented by man. Early recorded uses for smoke signals were devised by Chinese dynasties as far back as the 7th century BC, where beacons were used to man the Great Wall of China to warn of impending attacks from their enemies.

Smoke signals are distinctly limited however, in that their

meaning must be pre-agreed and understood. Smoke signals are only able to communicate basic ideas unless complex methods are used.

Disadvantages

Postal Services

The letter is the forerunner of all modern communication as we know it. People have been sending letters since ancient times - The first recorded postal system was during Ancient Persia around 550BC. The infrastructure has developed over several centuries for no other reason than to transport

messages between different parties. The introduction of mail delivered by rail in 1862, or international air mail in 1927, broke the boundaries of communication that had previously been impregnable. People could suddenly send letters quickly, to any corner of the world.

There are a number of disadvantages to communication by mail. Letters take a long time to arrive at their destination and more importantly, they can be lost in transit, or even damaged.

Disadvantages

The sixteenth century saw the founding of the modern postal service by King Henry VIII, who created a “Master of the Posts” and a concise delivery system; the rest of Europe soon followed in England’s wake.

The nineteenth century saw the introduction of stamps, which is what gave rise to the concept of pre-paying for post and deliveries.

Telegraph

Although the idea to use electricity to transmit signals dates back to the eighteenth century, it was only in 1883 that the first telegram was actually sent. The telegraph was a revolutionary milestone in human communications.

Samuel Morse invented Morse Code to communicate via

telegraph over long distances. For the first time in human history, messages could be sent and received instantly over many miles.

People were only able to send short messages as they were charged per letter. Moreover, privacy was not guaranteed.

In 1915, the first transcontinental phone service was inaugurated in the USA, and speaking with someone thousands of miles away became possible.

The cost and latency issues of long distance communication over telephone constitute the main disadvantages of this type of communication.

Disadvantages

Telephone

With the increasing penetration of the telegraph across countries, the race to improve its function began, with the aim of allowing people to use their voices.

Disadvantages

On the 10th March 1876, Alexander Graham Bell famously called his assistant Mr. Watson, which became the first ever voice call. The public demand for telephone had, at the time of its invention, been

understated. After a presentation by Alexander Bell in 1876, the then US President Rutherford Hayes commented:

Internet

2. Global Reach

Users of internet-based communication tools can reach anyone who has access to internet because it works on a global scale.

ONEm brings the advantages of internet-style communication such as global reach and cost efficiency to traditional mobile communication. As ONEm operates over traditional GSM networks, it delivers superior quality and reliability, which is often missing in Internet communications. Therefore, ONEm is an excellent medium to satisfy global communication needs, especially the needs of migrant population around the world.

1. Cost Efficiency

To use internet-based communication tools their users pay only to access the internet.

As communication over the internet offers great savings, there is a tendency to turn to the internet communication when making long distance calls.

Mobile Phone

In 1973, the first prototype of a mobile telephone became a reality. This prototype was never manufactured on a large scale, nevertheless it did take the first step of taking the mobile into the user’s hand.

The first GSM mobile was born: the Orbitel 901 in 1992, which was also the first phone to receive a commercial SMS text message.

In 2006, the real computer age started. The term smartphone became common as more and more mobile phones incorporated more sophisticated functions.

Over time, phones have become smarter, more technical and multi-functional. Nonetheless, voice calls and messages have remained the most important features of the phone. However, the user habits related to calling have changed over time. As technology has advanced and transformed, so has the way people contact one another.

In recent years, VOiP has been at the height of global communication,

especially for long distance calls. However, due to the flexible nature of these services, operators are finding that they are not generating the same revenue. The main reason for this are:

The first commercialised mobile phone was the Motorola Dynatax 8000x which was released in 1983, ten years after the first prototype.

World Migration

Individual and group migration is a phenomenon that has been present throughout human history. There are countless reasons behind human migration. Over the centuries, people have migrated due to diverse economic, social, political, and environmental factors such as:

- Pursuit of higher standards of living

- Business opportunities

- Political/religious persecution

- Inequality

- Natural disaster

- War

ONEm has conducted extensive research into the world’s migrant population. The migrant population is a sizeable market whose global communications needs are currently not met. As such, this is a lucrative market where ONEm can provide a solution. This is demonstrated in the following maps of migrant populations.

Today, migration continues to rise globally. The United Nations estimated that there are 232 million international migrants across the globe. In the World Migration report, the United Nations state that almost half of all migrants live in the following 10 countries:

USA 45.8m

UK

7.8m France7.5m Canada7.3m Australia6.5m Spain6.5m Russia

11m Germany9.8m Saudi Arabia 9.1m
