Object storage and software defined archiving:

How to design future proof, cost efficient and

flexible solutions

(2)

Specialized in compliant archiving

Established 2004

Headquarter: Freiburg – Germany

International representations in France, Italy and USA

Worldwide installations in various industries

(3)

 Company data is extremely important

 High damage potential due to loss of

data

Following issues could be the cause of damage risks:

 Tax requirements, e.g. General Tax Act (GTA)

 Legal requirements

 Industry related requirements

 Liability risks

(4)

Industry perspective:

User perspective:

 Companies with more than 200 employees

 Hospitals

 Customers from controlled markets (e.g.

Pharma, Finance, Energy…)

 Companies with high liability requirements,

e.g. automotive suppliers etc.

 Public authorities

 Everyone using SAP/ERP systems

 Everyone using DMS/ECM systems

(5)

How does iCAS help you as a customer?

Reduction of company risks

 Due to better protection of important data

 Securing data - preventing „silent data corruption“ Higher flexibility in terms of future IT-projects

 iCAS adapts to future changes in your infrastructure Higher Availability

 Due to Virtualisation of the archive

 By migrating backend data

Lower TCO

 iCAS is transferable to new hardware

 Efficient use of your storage infrastructure

 Investment protection

 Economical migration

(6)

Requirements for a compliant solution are based on various regulations

(e.g. DCC, GTA, Euro-SOX, General Administrative Law Act, Basel II, VATA ...)

 Data must be tamper-proof

 Data cannot be deleted (WORM)

 Data must be kept for a specified period (retention)

 Data must be able to be migrated to an alternative

media

 Access to individual archived objects must be possible at all times

(7)

Dynamic Online Data e.g. Databases File-Services Unstructured Application Data Unstructured ERP (SAP..) Mail (Symantec, Autonomy..) PACS (GE, AGFA..) ECM (Opentext..) Other

Characteristic of Application data:

 Compliance is important  Unstructured fixed content  Long retention periods

 Huge growing data amount (PBs)  Cold data

iCAS provides:

 Compliance

 Retention management / WORM

 Certified interfaces to more then 65 ISVs

Perfect fit for

iCAS competitors:

 NetApp Snaplock

 EMC Centera (sold ~600PB)

 Hitachi HCAP

 Dell DX (discontinued)

 IBM IA (discontinued)

iCAS for Long Term Archiving

SECURITY

iCAS provides security for your archive data.

FLEXIBILITY

iCAS provides you with the highest flexibility for the future of your

archive infrastructure.

COST EFFICIENCY

iCAS provides you various benefits for the lowest TCO.

(12)

“iCAS is a modern archive-infrastructure and fully meets the legal requirements.”

certified by Dr. Ivo Geis

– Lawyer for IT- and Information Law

KPMG has certified iCAS upon accordance with the legal requirements for tamper proof long term archiving.

iCAS meets legal requirements:

(13)

iCAS ISV support

iCAS has broad support from a variety of

software companies, such as:

OpenText

Symantec

Saperion

Docuware

ELO

SAP

MS SharePoint

Commvault

Kendox

Autonomy

Heilig & Schubert

Highest security standards:

 WORM Functionality with patented

Content-Storage-Container Technology (CSC)

 Save data archiving via 512 bit Hash code (HMAC SHA512)

 Integrated compression and encryption (AES256)

 Based on industry standards (Webservice)

 U.S. DoD- compliant data shredder

 High availability via cluster support

(15)

iCAS is able to archive data synchronously on two separate storage devices.

Various technologies could be used at the same time e.g. SAN and NAS.

This functionality provides security against the replication of logical failures of single storage devices or administrational failures.

iCAS monitors replicated storage systems continuously to identify and repair

broken objects.

Because of the hash value based

software of iCAS, the solution is able to decide whether an object is valid or broken.

(17)

Investment protection through storage independence

License model based on archive size in TB

iCAS software license is not bound to a hardware system

Replication of archive without additional iCAS license costs

 Easy data migration in a live environment

 Highly scalable from GB to PB– the license can be adjusted to the future demands – pay as you go

- Storage independence – free choice of hardware (internal

disks, external low, midrange or high-end disk systems)

 Low management costs due to integration into existing

infrastructures (management, backup, storage, virtualization remains unchanged)

(18)
(19)

1.

SECURITY

• Technology (WORM, AES-encryption, Data-Shredder ..) • ISV Support (Opentext, Symantec …)

• KPMG certification / Software Escrow

• Reference Installation for all industries available

2.

FLEXIBILITY

• Hardware Independent

• Virtualization (VMware, Hyper-V, Citrix, XEN ..) • Scalability

3.

COST EFFICENCY

• Investment protection • Fast and easy data migration • License model

• Low TCO
