The Auburn School District Community...
Auburn School District is known for its quality programs and services and enjoys tremendous support from its community patrons. Auburn School District encompasses an area of 56 square miles and is located on the southern border of King County. Included within school district boundaries are Auburn, Algona, Pacific, and unincorporated areas of King County. Population of the community is in excess of 77,472. School districts adjoining Auburn are Kent, Enumclaw, Dieringer, and Federal Way.
Auburn, with its small-town atmosphere, is only minutes away from cultural and sports activities in Seattle and Tacoma, and only a short distance from ski resorts of the Cascade Mountains. Five major universities, within easy commuting distance, offer a large variety of educational opportunities.
The school district communities have many parks and playgrounds. For example, the Game Farm Park provides soccer and baseball/softball fields; as well as tennis and pickle ball courts, a one-mile walking trail, picnic areas, and playground areas. Local rivers provide excellent steel head fishing. Saltwater fishing is just minutes away. Puget Sound, with its numerous coves and harbors, is recognized as a boating capital. Mt. Rainier National Park is dominated by the towering ice-clad mountain for which it is named. This 14,410-foot dormant volcano attracts climbers of all ages and skills.
Elementary School Program...
The Auburn School District has 14 elementary schools, all K-5, and will be building two new elementary schools in the next 5 years to accommodate our continued growth. Special programs, including structured learning special education classes, adaptive behavior classes, Early Childhood Education (ECE), English Language Learners (ELL), and Head Start are housed at various schools within the district. A gifted program for grades 4 and 5 is housed at one of the elementary schools. All elementary schools have resource rooms for students with learning disabilities and other important program specialists. Classroom teachers address the individual needs of students through the effective implementation of a standards-based teaching and learning focus. All curriculum is aligned with the State standards including appropriate benchmarks at each grade level. The district uses a variety of formative and summative assessments to measure students’ performance and adjust instruction to meet grade level/course benchmarks. A strong staff development program provides every teacher with curricula, instruction, and technology to be successful with every student.
Auburn has outstanding schools. All of the elementary schools are places where one would like to teach, be the principal, and have their own children attend. The principal is only one of many leaders in an Auburn elementary school. Principals assist staff and students to assume responsibility and feel self-confident, instrumental, and worthy. Each Auburn elementary school is a community of learners where collegiality is the norm. Teachers, staff, and the principal talk with each other about practice, observe each other in daily activities, and help each other become more skillful. Students and adults are encouraged to take risks. Students endeavor to be adventuresome and creative in their thinking, adult’s model risk taking and creative approaches to learning and instruction.
In Auburn schools, there is respect for diversity. Cultural differences are looked for, attended to, and celebrated as opportunities for learning. The school atmosphere offers the greatest possibility for all learners with high standards and expectations. Finally, Auburn elementary schools incorporate a team approach to education. Extensive parent and community involvement is paramount to the success of the overall program. Professional and Personal Qualifications...
