11.1 Information about toxicity effects
Chemical name (referring to concentrated substances)
LD50 LC50
Potassium hydroxide
CAS 1310-58-3 273 mg/kg (oral rat) No supplier provides sufficient data, no sufficient data in literature DESCRIPTION OF RELEVANT EFFECTS:
Corrosion/skin irritation: Much corrosive for skin and mucosae. Substance causes chemical burns, which severity depends upon the concentration of solution, importance of contamination and contact time. Based on the injury severity, hot and painful erythema may appear blisters and necrosis. Evolution may lead to complication such as infections, aesthetic or functional sequelae.
Corrosion of respiratory system:
Eye severe lesions/eye severe irritation:
Vapours and aerosols are corrosive. Injury severity is in relationship with solution concentration, quantity and contact time.
Substance causes chemical burns which severity is related to solution concentration, importance of contamination and contact time. Immediate pain to eyes, lacrimation and sequelae, such as conjunctival adhesions, corneal opacity, cataract, glaucoma and even blindness.
Respiratory sensitization: Skin sensitization:
Mutagenicity of germ cells: Carcinogenicity:
Toxicity for breeding:
Toxicity special for target organs (STOT) – single exposure:
Substance inhalation may cause a Brooks syndrome (asthma by irritating agents). A study on volunteers proved that sodium hydroxide is not a skin sensitizer. Moreover, this substance is widely used and any case of sensitization reported. No supplier provides sufficient data, no sufficient data in literature
No supplier provides sufficient data, no sufficient data in literature -Adverse effects on sexual function and fertility:
Data are not available. Substance does not show any systemic toxicity and effects on breeding do not seem to be plausible under normal conditions of use.
-Adverse effects on maturation:
Data are not available. Substance does not show any systemic toxicity and effects on breeding do not seem to be plausible under normal conditions of use.
-Effects on lactation or through lactation: Data not available.
Inhalation of vapors or aerosols immediately causes rhinorrhea, sneezing, burning sensation to nose and pharynx, cough, dyspnea and chest pain.
Complications are larynx edema and bronchospasm.
At end of exposure, symptoms may regress, but there could be a delayed lung edema within 48 hours.
Substance is corrosive and ingestion of a concentrated solution of sodium hydroxide causes pain to mouth, epigastric retrosternal pain with drooling, frequently vomiting with blood traces, esophagi or gastric perforation.
Toxicity special for target organs (STOT) – repeated exposure:
Danger in case of aspiration: Probable ways of exposure:
Exposure at work by inhalation reports in literature one case of severe obstructive pathology with cough, dyspnea and tachypnea after 20 years of exposure.
Prolonged skin exposure may give dermatitis.
No supplier provides sufficient data, no sufficient data in literature.
In a professional environment, the main ways of exposure are inhalation and contact with skin or eyes.
short and long term exposure:
Other toxicology data:
Complications are larynx edema and bronchospasm.
At end of exposure, symptoms may regress, but there could be a delayed lung edema within 48 hours. Other complications may involve superinfections.
Bronchial hypersecretions and desquamation of bronchial mucosa in case of extended injuries are responsible for nerve block obstructions and atelectasis. Lung sequel may be asthma (especially reactive dysfunction of airways or Brooks syndrome), bronchial stenosis, bronchiectasis and pulmonary fibrosis. Ingestion of concentrated solutions is followed by pain to mouth, epigastric retrosternal pain with hyper- salivation and blooding vomiting. There are also metabolic acidosis, hyper-leukocytosis, hemolysis and hypernatremia. Complications are esophageal or gastric perforations, digestive hemorrhage, fistulae, respiratory difficulty (evidence of a larynx edema, of lung disease due to inhalation or of an eso-tracheal fistula), shock, disseminated intravascular coagulation.
Evolution in the long term may involve digestive stenosis, in particular esophageal. Also exists the risk of cancerization of scar tissue injuries of the digestive tract. Skin and eyes contamination involves local chemical burns, which severity is in relationship with the solution concentration, importance of contamination and contact time. On a skin level, depending on the depth of injury, can be observed hot and painful erythema, water blisters and necrosis.
As for eyes, there is immediate pain, lacrimation and conjunctival hyperaemia. Sequelae may involve conjunctival adhesions, corneal opacity, cataract, glaucoma and even blindness.
On a long-term basis, dermal exposure may cause dermatitis.
If swallowed, causes a severe corrosion of oral cavity and pharynx with a risk of oesophagus and stomach perforation.
