SmartLaptop is a software for 3G Ericsson-RBS 6000 configuration.
This tool allow to gather different activities, commands, controls and existent tool (EMAS, CRT, FTP server, FTP client) in one tool; in order to improve the whole quality of integration of node-B.
This procedure describe the preparation of the tool, that is SmartLaptop USB stick creation and USB preparation before going on site (i.e. folder insertion).
The document is directed to Field Support and back-office.
Due to Ericsson hardware and software evolution and feedback from field technicians, this procedure is subject to modification.
2012 88 2 Generality
2.1 Prerequisite
SmartLaptop software must be installed on USB 2.0 (6-8 GB).
During basic smartLaptop installation USB will formatted. Bear in mind to backup your data in case.
Once installation has been finished, USB can be use as normal USB.
2.2 General procedure description
A. Download of SmartLatop software:
a. Go to Ericsson/SmartLaptop web site b. login
c. select download option
d. choose a folder where to save download e. software download (from 20 min to 1h30)
B. Software installation on USB drive (about 20min)
C. Obtaining license:
a. insert name, password, hardware Id, date, and an Ericsson employee which will approve this license.
2.3 Frequency of preparation
Basic Smartlaptop installation
1) Download and installation on USB must be done approximately every 8-10 months when a new SmartLaptop version is released (low frequency).

If you are using Internet Explorer browser it’s necessary to add “trusted site” attribute: click on ‘Tools ‘menu, select ‘’Internet options’. Click on tab ‘Security’, and then on “Trusted sites”, and on ‘Sites’ button. In the new window paste SmartLaptop seb site URL inside enter box “add this web site to the zone” and click on “Add”.
2012 88 Once you are on the “home” of web site:
- Insert your mail,
- and insert the project code: GWCUSP58FS, - Click on “Submit”.
Then “Choose Action”, and select “Create a new Smart Laptop USB stick”.

Choose a folder where save your file. (e.g. in Desktop/SmartLaptop/)
Wait for download. It’s about 600MB, and time depends of course of type of connection (from 20 min to 1h 30).
2012 88 4 Installation
Once the download is finished, right-click on “CreateSmartLaptopUsb.exe”.
Select run as administrator (!!), otherwise you will have problem on dualboot USB.

When the wizard appear, unplug and plug your USB stick and click on “Create” button.
Installation takes about 20 minutes. You can control progress with “Show/Hide Progress Details” buttons.

In order to use SL tool you need a license for each USB key.
The first time it’s mandatory to make a license request on Ericsson SL web site (see below).
Once a license has been received and copy on USB, there is two ways to renew a license: - receiving license by email
- or obtain automatically license by double-clicking on on “SLLicenseUpdater”.
5.1 First time license request:
To obtain a license for the first time or if you will use renewal by email, go on site: https://ext.ericsson.hr/SmartLaptopLicence/#/Home
Insert your login as already done in the download part, click on “Submit” and select “Get or renew a Smart Laptop license”.

Choose a name, insert your phone number and a password (minimum 6 char) Note 1: consider to note and save your own password
Click on “Upload HW Id file”, reach the USB stick path (i.e. Computer/MYLINUXLIVE), double click on file named “smartlaptop” (not on folder).

Therefore select a person for license approval, for instance (wiil be different for TME): [email protected], or [email protected]
“Notes to approver” are optional. Finally click on “Submit”.

You will be re-direct on SmartLaptop site, where you have to click on “download license” , save the file (for instance on your own folder) and copy license file on USB key inside smartlaptop folder.
The path where copy license is: \MYLINUXLIVE\smartlaptop\license.7z Below an example.

In order to get the license automatically, user must open the root folder of the USB stick “/MyLinuxLive” that contains the executable “SLLicenseUpdater”.
To renew the license by double-clicking on “SLLicenseUpdater” the following conditions must be verified:
1. the file “updateConfig” is already contained in the same folder
2. the license file is contained in the folder /smartlaptop/ (in other words, the request for the license has been done at least once before)
3. laptop must be connected to the internet Then the following window will confirm the renewal.
If the renewal is still valid or just renewed, the following message will be shown:
If the license is not in the USB stick or the update script has not been download, the user will get the following messages after double-clicking:

5.3 Downloading the “update.conf” file on the USB stick
To download the file “update.Conf” user must login through SL web interface, then download the update script by selecting “download update script” as in figure below:
