Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to study a viscosity iterative algorithm for finding a common element of the set of solutions of a general variational inequality problem for two inverse strongly accretive operators and the set of fixed points of a

δ

-strict pseudocontraction in a realq-uniformly smooth Banach space. Some strong

convergence theorems are obtained under appropriate conditions. As an application, we prove some strong convergence theorems for fixed point problems and

variational inequality problems or equilibrium problems in Hilbert spaces. These results improve and extend the corresponding results announced by many others.

1 Introduction

LetCbe a subset of a real Banach spaceXandTbe a mapping fromCinto itself. In what follows, we useF(T) to denote the set of fixed points ofT. LetX∗ be a dual space ofX

andq>  be a real number. We recall that the generalized duality mappingJq:X→X

∗ is defined by

Jq(x) =

x∗∈X∗:x,x∗=xq,x∗=xq–, ∀xX.

In particular,J=Jis called a normalized duality mapping andJq(x) =xq–J(x) forx= . We know thatJqis single-valued ifXis smooth, which is denoted byjq. Now we recall the

following definitions.

A mappingT:CCis said to beL-Lipschitzian if there exists a constantL>  such that

TxTyLxy, ∀x,yC. (.)

A mappingT:CCis said to be nonexpansive if

TxTyxy, ∀x,yC. (.)

(2)

A mappingf :CCis said to be a contraction if there exists a constantα∈(, ) such that

f(x) –f(y)≤αxy, ∀x,yC. (.)

We useCto denote the collection of all contractions onC.

A mappingT :CCis called aλ-strict pseudocontraction if there exists a constant λ∈(, ) such that

TxTy,jq(xy)

xyqλ(IT)x– (IT)yq (.)

for everyx,yCand for somej(xy)∈J(xy).

A mappingA:CXis said to beα-inverse-strongly accretive if there existjq(xy)∈

Jq(xy) and a constantα>  such that

AxAy,jq(xy)

αAxAyq, ∀x,yC. (.)

In recent years, a variational inequality problem in Hilbert spaces and Banach spaces has been studied by many authors, see [–] and the references therein.

LetCbe a nonempty closed convex subset of a real Hilbert spaceH. The classical vari-ational inequality problem is to findx∗∈Csuch that

Ax∗,xx∗≥, ∀xC. (.)

Recently, Cenget al.[] considered the following general variational inequality problem of finding (x∗,y∗)∈C×Csuch that

λAy∗+x∗–y∗,xx∗ ≥, ∀xC,

μBx∗+y∗–x∗,xy∗ ≥, ∀xC, (.)

whereλ>  andμ>  are two constants andA,B:CHare two operators. In particu-lar, ifA=Bandx∗=y∗, then problem (.) reduces to the classical variational inequality problem (.).

LetCbe a nonempty closed convex subset of a smooth Banach spaceXandA:CX be an accretive operator. Aoyamaet al.[] first considered the following generalized variational inequality problem in Banach spaces which is finding a pointx∗∈Csuch that

Ax∗,jxx∗ ≥, ∀xC. (.)

Very recently, Yaoet al.[] considered the following problem of finding (x∗,y∗)∈C×C

such that

Ay∗+x∗–y∗,j(xx∗) ≥, ∀xC,

Bx∗+y∗–x∗,j(xy∗) ≥, ∀xC, (.)

which is called the system of general variational inequalities in a real Banach space, where

(3)

For finding a common element of the set of solutions of problem (.) and the set of fixed points of a nonexpansive mapping T, Cenget al.[] introduced the following iterative algorithm:

⎧ ⎪ ⎨ ⎪ ⎩

x=uC,

yn=QC(xnμBxn),

xn+=αnu+βnxn+γnTPC(ynλAyn), n≥,

(.)

and proved a strong convergence theorem under some suitable conditions. Yaoet al.[] studied the following iterative algorithm:

yn=QC(xnBxn),

xn+=αnu+βnxn+γnQC(ynAyn), n≥,

(.)

and proved that the sequence{xn}converges strongly to an element of the set of solutions

of problem (.) under appropriate conditions.

Let Cbe a nonempty closed convex subset of a real Banach space X. For given two operatorsA,B:CX, we consider the problem of finding (x∗,y∗)∈C×Csuch that

λAy∗+x∗–y∗,jq(xx∗) ≥, ∀xC, μBx∗+y∗–x∗,jq(xy∗) ≥, ∀xC,

(.)

whereλ>  andμ>  are two constants. Whenλ=μ=  andq= , problem (.) re-duces to problem (.). WhenXis a Hilbert space, problem (.) becomes problem (.). Therefore problem (.) contains (.) or (.) as a special case. We also note that problem (.) was studied by Cai and Bu [] whenq= .

In this paper, we introduce a viscosity iterative algorithm for finding a common element of the set of solutions of a general variational inequality (.) and the set of fixed points of aδ-strict pseudocontraction in a realq-uniformly smooth Banach space. Then we prove some strong convergence theorems under suitable conditions. The results obtained in this paper extend and improve the results of Cenget al.[], Yaoet al.[] and many others.

2 Preliminaries

A Banach spaceXis called uniformly smooth ifρX(t)

t → ast→, whereρX: [,∞)→

[,∞) is the modulus of smoothness ofXwhich is defined by

ρX(t) =sup

A Banach spaceXis said to beq-uniformly smooth if there exists a constantc>  such thatρX(t)≤ctq. IfXisq-uniformly smooth, thenq≤ andXis uniformly smooth.

LetCandDbe two nonempty subsets ofXsuch thatCis nonempty closed convex and

Qx+t(xQx)∈CforxCandt≥. A mappingQ:CDis said to be a retraction if

(4)

We know that a projection mapping is a sunny nonexpansive retractionQofXontoC

(see Bruck []). IfXis a real smooth Banach space, thenQis an orthogonal projection of

XontoCif and only if

Q(x)∈C and Q(x) –x,jq

Q(x) –y ≤, ∀yC. (.)

In order to prove our main results, we need the following lemmas.

Lemma .([], p.) Let q> ,then the following inequality holds:

ab≤ qa

q+q– 

q b

q q–

for arbitrary positive real numbers a,b.

Lemma .([]) Let X be a real q-uniformly smooth Banach space,then there exists a constant Cq> such that

x+yqxq+qy,jqx+Cqyq

for all x,yX.In particular,if X is a real-uniformly smooth Banach space,then there exists a best smooth constant K> such that

x+y≤ x+ y,jx+ Ky

for all x,yX.

Lemma .([]) Assume that{an}is a sequence of nonnegative real numbers such that

an+≤( –αn)an+δn,n≥,where{αn}is a sequence in(, )and{δn}is a sequence inR

such that

(i) ∞n=αn=∞;

(ii) lim supn→∞δn αn≤or

n=|δn|<∞.

Thenlimn→∞an= .

Lemma .([]) Let{xn}and{zn}be bounded sequences in a Banach space X,and let{βn}

be a sequence in[, ]which satisfies the condition <lim infn→∞βn≤lim supn→∞βn< .

Suppose xn+=βnxn+ ( –βn)zn,n≥andlim supn→∞(zn+–znxn+–xn)≤.Then limn→∞znxn= .

Lemma .([]) Let C be a nonempty convex subset of a real q-uniformly smooth Banach space X and T :CC be aλ-strict pseudocontraction. Forα∈(, ),we define Tαx=

( –α)x+αTx.Then,asα∈(,μ],μ=min{,{C

,:CC is nonexpansive such

that F() =F(T).

(5)

constantα∈(, ).Then{xt}defined by xt=tf(xt)+(–t)Txtfor t∈(, )converges strongly

to a point in F(T).If we define Q:CF(T)by

Q(f) :=lim

t→xt, fC,

then Q(f)solves the following variational inequality:

(If)Q(f),jq

Q(f) –p ≤, fC,pF(T).

Lemma .([]) Let C be a closed convex subset of a real q-uniformly smooth Banach space X,and let T:CC be a nonexpansive mapping with F(T)=∅.Assume that{xn}is a

bounded sequence such that xnTxn→as n→ ∞.Let xt=tf(xt) + ( –t)Txt,∀t∈(, ),

where fC with contractive constantα∈(, ).Assume that Q(f) :=limt→xt exists.

Then

lim sup n→∞

(fI)Q(f),jq

xnQ(f) ≤.

Lemma . Let X be a q-uniformly smooth Banach space.Let C be a nonempty closed convex subset of X,and let S:CC be a nonexpansive mapping and T:CC be a

δ-strict pseudocontraction such that F(S)∩F(T)=∅.Let W be a mapping from C into itself defined by Wx= [( –α)I+αT]Sx for any xC,whereα∈(,μ),μ=min{,{Cq}

q–}

.

Then F(W) =F(S)∩F(T).

Proof First we show thatF(S)∩F(T)⊆F(W). Indeed, for anyxF(S)∩F(T), we have

( –α)I+αTSx=( –α)I+αTx= ( –α)x+αx=x,

which implies that xF(W). Hence F(S)∩F(T)⊆ F(W) holds. Next we prove that

F(W)⊆F(S)∩F(T). For anyxF(W) andyF(S)∩F(T), it follows from Lemma . that

xyq

Sxyq+qαTSxSx,jq(Sxy)

+CqαqTSxSxqxyq+qαSxyqδTSxSxqqαSxyq+CqαqTSxSxq

=xyqqαδCqαq TSxSxq,

which implies that

(6)

Therefore we obtain

TSx=Sx. (.)

It follows that

x=( –α)I+αTSx= ( –α)Sx+αSx=Sx. (.)

This implies thatxF(S). By (.) and (.), we havex=Sx=TSx=Tx, and hencexF(T). SoxF(S)∩F(T). Consequently, F(W)⊆F(S)∩F(T) also holds. This proof is

complete.

Lemma . Let C be a nonempty closed convex subset of a real q-uniformly smooth Banach space X.Let the mapping A:CX beα-inverse-strongly accretive.Then we have

(IλA)x– (IλA)yqxyq+Cqλq–– λAxAyq,

whereλ> .In particular,ifλ≤(qCα

q) 

q–,then IλA is nonexpansive.

Proof For allx,yC, we have by Lemma . (IλA)x– (IλA)yq=xyλ(AxAy)q

xyqqλAxAy,jq(xy)

+CqλqAxAyqxyqqλαAxAyq+CqλqAxAyq

=xyq+Cqλq–– λAxAyq.

Therefore whenλ≤(qCα

q) 

q–, we have thatIλAis nonexpansive.

Lemma . Let C be a nonempty closed convex subset of a real q-uniformly smooth Banach space X.Let PCbe a sunny nonexpansive retraction from X onto C.Let the

If <λ≤(qCα

Lemma .([]) Let C be a nonempty closed convex subset of a real q-uniformly smooth Banach space X.Let PCbe a sunny nonexpansive retraction from X onto C.Let A,B:CX

3 Main results

Theorem . Let C be a closed convex subset of a real q-uniformly smooth Banach space X(q> )which is also a sunny nonexpansive retraction of X.Let the mapping A:CX be

α-inverse-strongly accretive,and let B:CX beβ-inverse-strongly accretive.Let fC

F(G)∩F(T)=∅,where G is defined by Lemma..For given x∈C,let{xn}be a sequence

generated by

and Tθ :CC is a mapping defined by Tθx= ( –θ)x+θTx, where θ ∈(,ρ), ρ= min{,{C

Suppose that{αn},{βn}and{γn}are sequences in[, ]satisfying the

fol-lowing conditions: (i) αn+βn+γn= ;

(ii) limn→∞αn= ,

n=αn=∞;

(iii)  <lim infn→∞βn≤lim supn→∞βn< .

Then{xn}converges strongly to Q(f),where Q(f)∈F solves the following variational

in-equality:

(If)Q(f),jq

Q(f) –p ≤, fC,pF.

Proof First we prove that{xn}is bounded. LetW:CCbe a mapping defined byWx=

TθGxfor allxC. By Lemma ., we haveF(W) =F(G)∩F(T). It follows from Lemma .

thatis nonexpansive, thenWis also nonexpansive. We can rewrite (.) as

xn+=αnf(xn) +βnxn+γnWxn. (.)

TakepF, by (.), we have

xn+–p=αn

by induction. This implies that{xn}is bounded.

Next we show thatlimn→∞xn+–xn= . Putxn+=βnxn+ ( –βn)ln, then we have

ln+–ln=

xn+–βn+xn+  –βn+

which implies

ln+–ln

αn+  –βn+

f(xn+)+Wxn+

+ αn  –βn

f(xn)+Wxn +xn+–xn.

It follows that

ln+–lnxn+–xn

αn+  –βn+

f(xn+)+Wxn+ + αn

f(xn)+Wxn .

By condition (ii), we have that

lim sup n→∞

ln+–lnxn+–xn ≤.

By Lemma ., we obtainlimn→∞lnxn= . Therefore, lim

n→∞xn+–xn=nlim→∞( –βn)lnxn= . (.)

Again using (.), we have

which implies

Wxnxn

By conditions (i)-(iii) and (.), we have

lim

LetQ(f) =limn→∞xt andxt be the unique fixed point of the contractionTt :CC

given by

Ttx=tf(x) + ( –t)Wx, t∈(, ).

In view of Lemma ., we obtainQ(f)∈F(W) =Fwhich solves the following variational inequality:

(If)Q(f),jq

Q(f) –p ≤, ∀pF.

By Lemma . and (.), we get

lim sup n→∞

f(z) –z,jq(xnz)

Applying Lemma . to (.), we obtain that xnz as n→ ∞. This completes the

proof.

therefore we obtain the desired result by Theorem ..

Remark . Theorem . extends and improves Theorem . of Cenget al.[] in the following aspects.

(11)

(iii) From variational inequality problem (.) to more general variational inequality problem (.).

(iv) uis replaced byf(xn), wheref is a contractive mapping.

(v) The proof method of Theorem . is more simple than the ones of Cenget al.[] because we do not need to use the relaxed extragradient method. In fact, in the course of proof of Theorem ., Lemma . plays an important role. By using Lemma ., we can transform our iterative algorithm (.) into more uncomplicated form (.). In this way, we simplify the proof of Theorem ..

4 Applications

(I) Application to variational inequality problems for two strict pseudocontractive map-pings in Hilbert space.

Definition . A mappingT:CCis said to be ak-strict pseudocontractive mapping if there existsk∈[, ) such that

(IT)x– (IT)y≤ xy+kAxAy.

On the other hand,

(IT)x– (IT)y=xy– xy,AxAy+AxAy.

Hence we have

xy,AxAy ≥  –k

AxAy

. (.)

This shows thatAis a –k-inverse-strongly accretive mapping.

Theorem . Let C be a closed convex subset of a real Hilbert space H.Let T,T:CC

re-spectively.Let fCwith the coefficient <η< and T:CC be aδ-strict

(ii) limn→∞αn= ,

(iii)  <lim infn→∞βn≤lim supn→∞βn< .

Then{xn}converges strongly to Q(f),where Q(f)∈F solves the following variational

in-equality:

(If)Q(f),Q(f) –p≤, fC,pF.

Proof TakingA=IT:CH andB=IT:CH, from (.) we know thatA:

CHisα-inverse-strongly accretive withα=–k

 andB:CHisβ-inverse-strongly monotone withβ=–k

 . On the other hand, we have

zn=PC(ynλAyn) =PC

( –λ)yn+λTyn = ( –λ)yn+λTynC

and

yn=PC(xnμBxn) =PC

( –μ)xn+μTxn = ( –μ)xn+μTxnC.

The conclusion of Theorem . can be obtained from Theorem . immediately.

(II) Application to equilibrium problems.

Letφ:C×C→Rbe a bifunction, whereRis a set of real numbers. The equilibrium problem for the functionφis to find a pointxCsuch that

φ(x,y)≥ for allyC. (.)

The set of solutions of (.) is denoted byEP(φ).

For solving the equilibrium problem, we assume that the bifunctionφsatisfies the fol-lowing conditions (see []):

(A) φ(x,x) = for allxC;

(A) φis monotone,i.e.,φ(x,y) +φ(y,x)≤for anyx,yC; (A) φis upper-hemicontinuous,i.e., for eachx,y,zC,

lim sup t→+

φtz+ ( –t)x,yφ(x,y);

(A) φ(x,·)is convex and weakly lower semicontinuous for eachxC.

Lemma .([]) Let C be a nonempty closed convex subset of H,and letφbe a bifunction of C×C intoRsatisfying(A)-(A).Let r> and xH.Then there exists zC such that

φ(z,y) +

ryz,zx ≥ for all yC.

Lemma .([]) Assume thatφ:C×C→Rsatisfies(A)-(A).For r> and xH,

define a mapping Tr:HC as follows:

Tr(x) =

zC:φ(z,y) +

ryz,zx ≥,∀yC

(13)

for all zH.Then the following hold: () Tris single-valued;

() Tris firmly nonexpansive,i.e.,for anyx,yH,TrxTry≤ TrxTry,xy.

This implies thatTrxTryxy,∀x,yH,i.e.,Tris nonexpansive;

() F(Tr) =EP(φ),∀r> ;

() EP(φ)is a closed and convex set.

Combining Lemma . and the proof of Theorem ., we obtain the following result.

Theorem . Let C be a closed convex subset of a real q-uniformly smooth Banach space X(q> )which is also a sunny nonexpansive retraction of X.Let fCwith the coefficient

 <η< and T,S:CC be aδ-strict pseudocontraction and a nonexpansive mapping,

respectively,such that F:=F(S)∩F(T)= ∅.For given x∈C,let{xn}be a sequence generated

by

xn+=αnf(xn) +βnxn+γnTθSxn, n≥, (.)

where Tθ:CC is a mapping defined by Tθx= ( –θ)x+θTx, whereθ ∈(,ρ),ρ= min{,{C

q}  q–}

.Suppose that{αn},{βn}and{γn}are sequences in[, ]satisfying the

fol-lowing conditions: (i) αn+βn+γn= ;

(ii) limn→∞αn= ,∞n=αn=∞;

(iii)  <lim infn→∞βn≤lim supn→∞βn< .

Then{xn}converges strongly to Q(f),where Q(f)∈F solves the following variational

in-equality:

(If)Q(f),jq

Q(f) –p ≤, fC,pF.

Using Theorem ., we can obtain the following strong convergence theorem for the fixed point problem of a strict pseudocontraction and the equilibrium problem in a Hilbert space.

Theorem . Let C be a nonempty closed convex subset of a real Hilbert space H.Let

:C×C→Rbe a bifunction satisfying conditions(A)-(A).Let T:CC aδ-strict pseudocontraction such that F=F(T)∩EP()=∅.Let f:CC be anη-contraction with

η∈(, ).Suppose that{αn},{βn}and{γn}are three real sequences in(, )satisfying the

following conditions: (i) αn+βn+γn= ;

(ii) limn→∞αn= ,

n=αn=∞;

(iii)  <lim infn→∞βn≤lim supn→∞βn< .

For any x∈C,let{xn}be a sequence generated by

unC such that(un,y) +ryun,unxn ≥, ∀yC,

xn+=αnf(xn) +βnxn+γnTθun, n≥,

inequality:

(If)z,jq(zp)

≤, fC,pF.

Proof By Lemma ., we know thatTris nonexpansive andF(Tr) =EP(φ). Hence we

ob-tain the desired result by Theorem .. This proof is complete.
