Health and Safety in Australia
Union workplaces are safer workplaces
Unacceptably high rates of
workplace fatality, injury and disease continue to devastate working Australians and their families. Data shows 600,000 workers are injured annually – 127,000 of those seriously – costing Australia more than $60 billion per annum.
While addressing a recent ACTU Work Health Safety and Workers’ Injury
Compensation conference, ACTU Assistant Secretary Michael Borowick said: “We know
that union workplaces are safer workplaces. Health and Safety Representatives who have the support of union members at their workplace and the resources of the union office and its officials behind them make a huge positive difference. Most Health and Safety Representatives are knowledgeable, passionate and brave. Often they lead the campaign to eliminate, reduce and manage the hazards that threaten the wellbeing of their co-workers.”
WHS provides great mechanisms for unions and workers to have direct discussions with their employers at workplaces about risks and hazards they are concerned about and talk about solutions that will protect them. The resources and work of the ACTU support unions and their members to organise around WHS in their workplaces. While every worker has the right to go to work and come home healthy and safe, for many that right is often not recognised. As a result, high levels of work-related death, injury and illness are still a shameful reality in Australia. The rights of injured workers are also of fundamental significance. Unions continue to advocate for effective rehabilitation and return to work programs, as well as the provision of economic security
through workers’ injury compensation arrangements, which are all critically important to injured workers, their families and the wider community. In work health and safety, and workers’ injury compensation, the ACTU focusses on: • Advocating for workers at the
national level on government and non-government bodies, including Safe Work Australia, the Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation Commission, and the Asbestos Safety and Eradication Council; • Lobbying for better and more
effective legislation and regulation; • Identifying and working to address major health and safety issues for workers; • Monitoring international research, standards and solutions;
• Opposing measures which diminish WHS regulation, standards and schemes designed to protect workers;
• Standing up for people over profits; • Providing information, resources and guidelines to unions and workers; and • Conducting campaigns in conjunction with state and territory peak union councils.
