1. vROps Management Pack for NetApp Storage User Guide

The vRealize Operations Management Pack for NetApp Storage User Guide describes the primary features of the vRealize Operations Management Pack for NetApp, including dashboards, views, and alerts that allow users to optimize the monitoring and management of NetApp resources.

This information is intended for anyone using a licensed copy of the vRealize Operations Management Pack for NetApp.

3. Introduction to the NetApp Management Pack

The NetApp Management Pack is an embedded “adapter” for vRealize Operations (vROps). It retrieves data from either a NetApp OnCommand Unified Manager Core (DFM) or API Services server and makes it available within vROps.

The NetApp Management Pack enables the exchange of information between a DFM/API Services server and vROps.

3.2 How the Management Pack Collects Data

During each data collection cycle, the NetApp adapter instance opens a connection to the DFM/API Services server and runs a main collection query.The collection interval for the adapter instance resource determines how often it collects data. The default collection interval is five minutes. For information about changing the collection interval, see the vROps UI online help.

The NetApp Management Pack supports both auto-discovery and manual discovery of resources. When you enable auto-discovery for a NetApp adapter instance, it creates resources in vROps and collects data after the main collection query runs.

3.3 Data the Management Pack Collects

The NetApp Management Pack can collect performance data, relationship data, and events for NetApp Storage objects.

NOTE - DFM only: When you add a NetApp adapter instance in vROps, you can enable automatic filer

configuration to have the adapter instance configure the DFM server to collect the metrics that vROps needs for analysis. If you do not set this option, you must use the NetApp Management Console to configure the DFM server to collect metrics.

3.4 NetApp Management Pack Inventory Trees

The NetApp Management Pack includes four Inventory Trees. These can be accessed from Home -> Environment Overview, under the ‘Inventory Trees’ grouping. Inventory Trees are a way to quickly navigate through related NetApp Objects. In addition, all four Inventory Trees include VMware Datastores and Virtual Machines within the hierarchy when appropriate.

3.4.1 NetApp Systems

Provides a view of all NetApp cluster-mode objects, starting from the NetApp Cluster objects.

Provides a view of all NetApp Aggregates monitored by the NetApp Management Pack. Expanding an Aggregate will show any NetApp LUNs, Volumes, and QTrees that are hosted by the Aggregate.

Dashboards are the primary user interface that allow the user to monitor/troubleshoot NetApp data problems in vROps. The following dashboards are available in the NetApp Management Pack:

4.1 NetApp - Storage Topology

This dashboard is a topology of your NetApp infrastructure. By selecting a NetApp resource within the Custom Relationship widget on the left, you can quickly view the key performance indicators and relationships for the selected resource.

Select a resource from the Environment Overview widget on the left to populate the remaining widgets. Then select a metric from the metric selector to see it graphed below.

4.2 NetApp - Datastores

This dashboard is an overview of all VMware datastores using NetApp storage.

Select a datastore to see detailed information about its health and key metrics. Then select a metric from the datastore metrics to see it graphed below.

This dashboard is an in depth view of the detailed metrics displayed for the selected NetApp Storage Systems. Select a NetApp System to see detailed information about its health and key metrics. Then select a metric from the metric selector to see it graphed below.

4.4 NetApp - Virtual Machine Troubleshooting This dashboard is used to help troubleshoot NetApp.

Select a VMware virtual machine (VM) to populate the NetApp Environment and NetApp Health Tree. Select a resource from the NetApp Environment and a metric from the Metric Picker to see a graph of that metric.

5. Using Tags

The NetApp Management Pack creates the following Entity Status resource tags in the vROps UI: • NetApp 7 Mode Resources

• NetApp Cluster Mode Resources

• VMware Datastores hosted on NetApp Storage • VMware VMs hosted on NetApp Storage

These tag values represent groupings of NetApp and VMware resources to provided ease of troubleshooting and filtering on specific widgets in our dashboard templates.

vROps provides widgets that can further filter the resources displayed using Entity Status resource tags.

NOTE: Entity Status resource tags for NetApp are not visible in the UI until after at least one resource in a

resource tag has been collected from a NetApp Storage System by the Management Pack. 5.1 Dashboard - NetApp Storage Topology

1. Click on the Content navigation shortcut ( ), then the Dashboards view from the navigation pane. 2. Select the NetApp Storage Topology dashboard and click the Edit icon ( ).

3. Edit the VMware on NetApp – Select a Resource widget.

4. Click the Configuration tab. Select the Virtual Machine Resource Kind in the Resource Kind and Resource Kind Type list.

5. In the tag list on the top right of the Advanced section, expand NetApp Entity Status, then select VMware VMs hosted on NetApp Storage.

6. Select the Datastore Resource Kind in the Resource Kind and Resource Kind Type list

7. In the tag list on the top right of the Advanced section, expand NetApp Entity Status, then select VMware Datastores hosted on NetApp Storage. Click OK.

5.2 Dashboard - NetApp - Datastores

1. Click on the Content navigation shortcut ( ), then the Dashboards view from the navigation pane. 2. Select the NetApp Datastores dashboard, then click the Edit icon ( ).

3. Edit the Select Datastore (on NetApp Storage) widget.

4. In the tag list on the bottom, expand NetApp Entity Status, then select VMware Datastores hosted on NetApp Storage. Click OK.

5.3 Dashboard - NetApp - Virtual Machine Troubleshooting

1. Click on the Content navigation shortcut ( ), then the Dashboards view from the navigation pane. 2. Select the NetApp - Virtual Machine Troubleshooting dashboard, then click the Edit icon ( ). 3. Edit the Select VMware VM (Running off of NetApp Storage) widget.

4. In the tag list at the bottom, expand NetApp Entity Status, then select VMware VMs hosted on NetApp Storage. Click OK.

5. Edit the NetApp Environment widget.

6. Click the Configuration tab. Select the Virtual Machine Resource Kind in the Resource Kind and Resource Kind Type list.

7. In the tag list on the top right of the Advanced section, expand NetApp Entity Status, then select VMware VMs hosted on NetApp Storage.

8. Select the Datastore Resource Kind in the Resource Kind and Resource Kind Type list.

9. In the tag list on the top right of the Advanced section, expand NetApp Entity Status, and select VMware Datastores hosted on NetApp Storage. Click OK.

6. Views

The NetApp Management Pack creates views that allow the user to view statistics of metrics across an entire NetApp Environment. The views help give a broad picture of the entire system, as opposed to a more in depth view.

7. Troubleshooting the NetApp Adapter Instance

Known troubleshooting information can help you diagnose and correct common problems with your NetApp adapter instance.

This section includes the following topics: • Troubleshoot an Adapter Instance • Test Connection Failures

7.1 Troubleshoot an Adapter Instance

Perform these general troubleshooting steps to diagnose and correct problems with a NetApp adapter instance: • Verify that the DFM/API Services server is running.

• API Services only: Verify that OnCommand Unified Manager and OnCommand Performance Manager

servers are running.

• Edit the adapter instance and click Test Connection to verify the connection to the DFM/API Services

server. If an error occurs, refer to section 7.2, Testing Connection Failures.

• View the collection status and collection state for the adapter instance resource on the Environment Overview page in vROps.

• Check the adapter and collector logs for errors. Refer to section 7.3, Viewing System Log Files, in the accompanying Installation and Configuration Guide.

7.2 Test Connection Failures

When clicking Test Connection, the following connection errors are possible. 7.2.1 Bad or Incorrect Host Name

Problem: “Unable to establish a valid connection to the target system. Failed to test adapter: If using DFM/

OCUM: Unable to connect to DFM server. If using API Services: Unable to connect to API Services.”

Remedy: Check to ensure the host name provided is correct.

7.2.2 Authentication Failure

Problem: “Unable to establish a valid connection to the target system. Failed to test adapter: If using DFM/

OCUM: Unable to connect to DFM server. If using API Services: Username or password is invalid.”

Remedy: Check to ensure the user name and password is correct.

7.2.3 vROps Incorrect Credentials or Incorrect Permissions

Problem: “Unable to establish a valid connection to the target system. vROps REST API server is

inaccessible. This may be due to an incorrect username or password. Ensure that your vRealize user has the ‘Administrator -> REST APIs’ permission.”

Remedy: Check to ensure your vRealize user name and password was entered correctly.

7.2.4 Wrong Protocol (HTTP vs. HTTPS)

Problem: “Unable to establish a valid connection to the target system. Failed to test adapter: If using

DFM/OCUM: Unable to connect to DFM server. If using API Services: API Services only supports https for connections.”

Remedy: Ensure the correct protocol was selected when adding the adapter instance (default is HTTP).

7.2.5 Incorrect Port

Problem: “Unable to establish a valid connection to the target system. Failed to test adapter: If using DFM/

OCUM: Unable to connect to DFM server. If using API Services: Unable to connect to API Services.”

Remedy: Ensure the correct port was entered under Advanced Settings when adding the adapter instance

(Note: If using vCOps, the protocol selection can be found under Basic Settings).

NOTE: By default, the Port entry field is set to 0 and uses the default port. If a different number is entered, the

default port will be overridden.

7.3 View System Log Files

You can view NetApp adapter instance errors in the adapter and collector log files within the vROps user interface or in an external log viewer.

The NetApp adapter instance log files are in the $ALIVE_BASE/user/log/adapters/NetAppAdapter/ folder. The collector log files are in the $ALIVE_BASE/user/log/ folder.

The logging level is set to ERROR or WARNING by default. To troubleshoot issues, set the logging level to INFO. To view detailed messages, including micro steps, queries, and returned results, set the logging level to DEBUG. You can set the base log level for the collector via Administrator -> Support -> Logs -> Select Collector folder

-> Select Edit Properties -> Edit Root logger level.

NOTE: If you set the logging level to DEBUG, log files can become large very quickly. Set the logging level to

DEBUG only for short periods of time. For complete information about viewing log files and modifying log levels, refer to the VROps online help.

7.4 Resolve Common Problems

The following steps outline solutions for resolving some of the most common problems you may encounter. 7.4.1 Metrics Do Not Appear In the User Interface

Problem: The NetApp adapter instance is not collecting metrics.

Cause: There is a problem with the DFM/API Services server connection, metric collection configuration, or

adapter instance configuration.

Solution:

1. If metrics do not appear in the user interface 10 minutes after the first collection cycle, verify that other metrics are being collected.

2. If vROps is collecting other metrics, check the status of the NetApp adapter instance resource on the

OPTION DESCRIPTION

Status is green Verify that the DFM/API Services server that you are connected to is monitoring at least one NetApp system.

DFM only: There might be a metric collection configuration problem. When you configure a

NetApp adapter instance, you can set the Auto Filer Configuration option to True or you can manually configure filers for metric collection. For information about manually configuring files, refer to theConfigure the NetApp DFM Server to Collect Metricssection in the accompanying Installation and Configuration Guide.

Status is red The DFM/API Services serveris down or your NetApp adapter instance is misconfigured. Refer to section 7.4.2, Adapter Instance Resource Status Is Red.

7.4.2 Adapter Instance Resource Status Is Red

Problem: The status icon for the adapter instance resource is red on the Environment Overview page.

Cause: The DFM/API Services server is down or the NetApp adapter instance is misconfigured. Solution:

1. Verify that the DFM/API Services server is running.

2. In the NetApp adapter instance configuration, verify the validity of the entries in the API Services or DFM/ OCUM Host text box and the corresponding entry selected in the Credential drop-down menu.

7.4.3 Capacity and Performance Data Collection Times Are Not Synchronized

Problem: The collection times for capacity data and performance data are different.

Cause: Data collection is not in the historic data collection phase, or the adapter has finished collecting all of

the desired historic data. One or both of the following situations can cause this problem: • The DFM/API Services server time is not properly aligned with real time.

• The vROps server time is not properly aligned with real time.

The DFM/API Services server provides the time stamp for performance data and the time stamp for capacity data is based on the vROps server time. As a result, if either server is not properly aligned with real time, the capacity data and performance data collection times will not be synchronized.

Solution:

Make sure that both the DFM server/API Servicesand vROps server times are aligned with real time. Possible solutions include Network Time Protocol (Linux) and Network Time Synchronization Tool (Windows).

7.4.4 Data Collection Fails After Upgrading

The NetApp adapter instance does not perform data collection.

Problem: After upgrading the NetApp adapter instance from a build prior to 1062390 to build 1062390 and

later, the adapter instance does not enter the collection state.

Cause: The NetApp adapter instance remains in the start state. Solution:

1. Update the ResourceIdentifier, as follows: UPDATE ResourceIdentifier

SET STRINGVAL=’disabled’

WHERE RESOURCE_ID IN (SELECT RESOURCE_ID FROM AliveResource WHERE FLAG=7) AND RKIDENT_ID IN (SELECT RKIDENT_ID FROM ResourceKindIdent WHERE
